Anyone know if the hose is good quality? But more importantly can the hose be repaired or replaced if broken? Also can it be extended to 30m in some way and still roll back into the mechanism?
For $50, it is unlikely to be very good quality. If it is in a sheltered area and you look after it well (ie clean it before retracting it, use it very gently) then it may last a while, however this isn't going to give you years of use. At this price point, the hose is likely to kink easily as well.
Source: bought a cheap hose reel, replaced it with an expensive one that doesn't kink and is much more sturdy
This, whilst some people may get use out of them, Im never buying cheap reels again (I went through 3 - though in all fairness they werent ALDI ones)
I bought 2 last time and 1 has been in the sun the whole time. No fading and retracts properly still
As have I, QLD sun too FWIW, I have a couple that are approaching their 4th summer and have no signs of slowing down.
Do you mean last year?
Have been using quite often for last 4 years and still works perfectly fine.
Bought this a couple years ago. After one summer (yes, we wound this thing up religiously after use, and it was mounted in an area where it was shaded, it was f&#ked. Hose is thin and kinks, and lacks pressure too. It's just not a good purchase. Comes across as value for a mountable, protected hose for 50 bucks, but every time you use it, you'll be annoyed at something and then there's longevity, where, there's none. Avoid.
at least you won't be mad at it for long! Hard enough to find a $100+ one of these that's good quality
Long after the cost is forgotten the quality will remain
can you buy me one? you'll forget the cost.
Ozbeggin
Can you just replace with a better quality hose after the stock hose starts kinking? I was able to replace in my Hozelock reels, it's not hard job, but if it's cheap plastic unmaintainable type design then probably you can't.
Could someone please recommend a hose reel? I dont need a retractable one - just a reel which doesn't leak. I already have a good quality hose.
Thanks.Crimped end fittings have removed all leaking for me. Get a $40+ hose that has good kinkiness rating from Bunnings.
Thanks.
Is that a tool?
I tried to Google for that "crimped end" but couldn't find any good results.nah its just the hose that comes with crimped connectors on the end instead of the ones you screw and tighten (the quick change ones).
like the one on the left…

The biggest thing that wears them out is the UV from the sun so keep them in the shade and they won't become brittle or crack as easily.
@ChickenDinner123: I see. Thanks.
However, the one that we have now seems to be leaking not from the hose, but at the place where the rotating part begins.@ChickenDinner123: Any experience with painting the plastic to give some UV protection? or should I get Grannie to knit a cover for it?
Best kinkiness ratings are found outside of Bunnings. Usually has the word "adult" in their store name.
Bunnings matching?
Don't think Bunnings sells the same brand
They'll usually match with one of their own brands
Which product link?
Never heard that before and I doubt it.
@Bluering48: Ha ha ha I'd guess 50% of Ozito tool deals on this site are to match Aldi special buys.
@Punkboy: is it store policy that bunnings staff/workers know ?
@capslock janitor: Unfortunately it is a bit random in that Bunnings head office choose which products to "match" and set the price lower across all stores. It's not an option for individual team members to match. They are very aggressive matching tools but sometimes other items such as a hose reel will not be.
@Bluering48: You clearly don't visit OzBargain enough. Bunnings do this frequently with garden and tool related products during Aldi's special buys. The most famous of which is when Aldi has their annual lawn mower deals.
Bought this one last week for $56 from ebay, not sure which one is better.
How would this be against the Bunnings aqua systems 20m retractable one for $49.50?
Both rubbish but at least with Bunnings it’s easy to return/replace.
Isn't ALDI easy returns too?
ye but good luck trying to get it replaced
@y33tcity: truuu but then use refund to buy bunnings haha
The Aldi one is a better looking unit at least
I want to see the hose
reminded me of https://youtu.be/p78WyMAZJTY
just bought my second one today, first one used for about 2 years with north facing sun in Melbourne, works really well, was going to buy some of the bigger brands from Bunnings, but the review is pretty crap in general, no complaints about the Aldi one at all.
There crap i owned one lasted 18months rusted out
Which part? Seems to be all plastic
Mine lasted 9 months so we bought a hoselink. The hoselink is now a couple of years old & still looks like new.
This is landfill.
Completely agree - Landfill!
There is only Hoselink. Hoselink and nothing but Hoselink. Buy any retractable hose other than Hoselink and regret it in less than 12 months.
Of course, you could go industrial, but then it's another price range altogether.Did I mention Hoselink?
Do note that it swivels to 170 and not 180. Installed it and it matters to me to leave the most space to walk past it.

Glue?
Looks a bit different to the Aldi version we bought 6 years ago, but the three have all lasted in full exposure to the WA sun and not one of them has failed or even shown signs of letting up anytime soon. Only the plastic has faded and gone dry.
Purchased one about 2 years ago. I leave it in the hot Perth sun and the hose is still good.
i had an aldi cheapy for about 4 years and then it finally died on me. For the $ I wasnt too disappointed TBH but been glad I spent the extra and went with a hoselink the past 4 years its been awesome with really good customer service.
I bought two of these on Saturday and returned them both about half an hour later.
I retracted the whole hose to ensure it reached all areas of my garden then it wouldn't retract back in, completely useless and I'm glad I discovered it before I mounted to the wall.
I'm going to pay the money for a quality brand.
Yeah I just bought a Hoselink 20m & cover. Asked online chat for a discount code and they gave me 10% off which ain't bad. Sick of cheap retractable hoses failing after a couple of years. Plus my hose is North facing so cops a ton of sun and my existing Holman is disintegrated to hell.
What was the code? Can I see if it’s a generic one? Or use it to get a 10% code myself!
TRPTJSKF or if that doesn't work speak to the online chat on the website. You also get a free Mystery gift and free shipping if you spend over $99
I’ve messaged you to see if you can explain how you got it! They’re not playing ball with me
People keep mentioning Hoselink its $200 vs $50?
I got the missus to go to spotlight she bought some outside uv resistant waterproof grey material put in elastic at one end and draw chord with slide locker for back at wall bracket. Elastic end with opening hose reel end comes through. Don't have to take the covers off water just runs off them and no mould at all :) It cost us $30 for materials and her time with the sowing machine. So now we have reels that are protected from the sun and weather and other than the mechanism or hose failing they are going great, looks good too.
They are good value for money, I am going to get another 2, so for the cost of one hoselink I will have 4 around the house, this will reach all the points in my garden so happy to see it is back on offer. Oh and the 10 pattern spray nozzle is good too, I bought it last year for the hose and it is still going strong.
Mechanism fails on the cheaper hose reels. You would also want to put better fittings on which cost more $$$. The additional time and effort running around picking up materials and sewing. It's just not worth it for me with wife & 2 small kids but I can understand your point. Ironically Hoselink sells covers for $10-$25. I'm sure they would fit other brand hose reels.
Yes they have some on sale now, but they never put their sizes up so hard to know if they would fit. My wife also made a cover out of the material for my pool cleaning robot as it sits outside too. It's heavy material so it can't blow off and the rain and sun can't get at the robot as it is waterproof. She just rolled her eyes when I said that I bought another 2 of these reels on aldi and she would have to create another 2 covers :) haha.
You can use their actual hose reel size for reference
I bought a 50m Nylex one from bunnings on the weekend for 50 bux.. i used the Nylex blue one in the backyard was happy with it.. so got the 50m so i can pressure wash the sides of the house
Both are well known brands.
