Cheap Christmas Travel

Hi,

What are people's cheap Christmas travel ideas during the Christmas and new year's period? What is the cost?

I'm assuming flights are too expensive to go overseas but happy to be proven wrong.

Happy with local ideas or road trips for a few days.

Burget is about 1k for a week? Is that reasonable?

Thanks!

Burget is about 1k for a week? Is that reasonable?

So you have budgeted approx $100 a night for accommodation at Xmas/New Years??

  • For $1k you wont get a flight

Unless you luck into a camping site, you probably cant afford anywhere along the coast, but you might be able to find something very basic in a not fantastic location (that said, Christmas to NY along the coast is a nightmare, better off not going). You can probably go inland and find something within budget, but even then pickings are a bit spares eg a quick search of the Snowy Mountains showed 2 properties for under $1k (and 'property' is a generous interpretation eg tiny caravan)

    What is local?

    $1,000 for a week = $142/day.
If it were me, I'd stay at home but go out somewhere every day and do something that I either enjoy doing (but don't always have the time perhaps) or try something new. Include a nice lunch or dinner somewhere on some days at least.
I'd use that budget to get through the week.

    • Excellent answer.

    Cheap Christmas travel

    Choose two.

  • Nice troll.

  • 1k for a week might be enough to set up a tent in the backyard?

  • Hitch hike, but dont go via Belanglo state forest…..

    • It's ok. Ivans' dead

  • Cheap Christmas Travel

    LOL no such thing.

  • 1k budget.

hostel and cheap flight to mackay or rockhampton.

  • How many people is this budget for? I was looking for 3 people recently and I reckon I could only go 4 days (3 nights) and it was about $2k cost.

    • Accommodation
    • Car Hire
    • Flights

    That wasn't food and activities.

$1k is probably tight. You would have to fly off peak days + times and then get really cheap accommodation. Then how would you get around? If you stayed out of town for cheap accommodation you would need a car (I assume).

  • Camping?

  • Hit up your friends or rellies that live somewhere nice. Perhaps they are going away and need someone to house sit.

How about camping on Cockatoo Island? It’s around $90/night I think for a fully equipped tent for 2-3, and the island has shower block and bbq facilities. It’s quite an interesting place to walk around and you can catch the ferry to Balmain for dinner/pub. https://www.cockatooisland.gov.au/en/see-and-do/stay/waterfr…

    • That looks great!

      • It's not great if you want to actually sleep. Between children running around, then drinking/partying adults, followed by the party cruises on the harbour, it wasnt much fun. Had lots of promise, is quite picturesque, but honestly, a daytrip is a better option. Also the restaurants/food options were severly restricted without notice which was a dampener

        • Ah, thanks for the insight. I suspected that might be the case when I looked at the prices on the website and saw they also sell earplugs :-)

  • I just search for accommodation over the weekend in Gold Coast and the cheapest motel room in Palm beach come to $ 200 per night. That too not a school holiday period.

Due to covid, all holiday rentals have moved to long-term rentals and hence there are no properties in the market. Also, no staff is available in the hotel to keep up your room.

My office colleague came back from QLD and she mentioned that Hilton has advised her that they will not be doing up her room for a 3-night stay since they are having a staff shortage.

  • Theres considerably more Airbnb out there now since covid as people buying a second house in regional area as a potential escape residence.

A big loss to the long term rentals some rentalss are now talking about restricting Airbnbs as to the rental market.

Its extremely hard for people to find rentals at reasonable rates people who use to work in hospitality in tourist destinations etc cant find somewhere to live now thats one contributing factor to worker shortages in hospitality.

Try booking a room in locations like Merimbula now dramatic increase in domestic tourism your choices have dramatically reduced due to higher occupation rates and prices have dramatically increased a family friend who owns a motel in Eden near Merimbula says it was tough several times during covid but is now doing the best his ever done in the last 15 years.

  • Go on a cruise, all meals included. And you get to enjoy places like New Caledonia.
