    18tb for $411.08 or 20tb for $486.20?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/729843

    • Which one guarantees CMR?

      • +2

I've got 3 of this 18TB units and can confirm they are CMR.

list of CMR and SMR drives

Got mine at $384 back in July.

        • I think AUD went down in value.

          • +2

@Mortin: So did the pound so they're about even. AUD was up a lot on the pound a few weeks ago, but then the RBA decided it didn't need to reduce inflation so the AUD tanked and inflation went up.

        • Got mine at $384 back in July.

I still have wet dreams over that deal.

    • big is good….

    • +3

Just going based on per TB:

      18TB for $411.08 = $22.84/TB
      20TB for $486.20 = $24.31/TB

    Limited to 1 drive purchase

    Also $389.75 for the 16TB - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08KY4P7L5

Not as cheap but allows multiple drive purchase.

    • Damn, I need two. I guess multiple accounts is okay?

      • 2 prime accts I guess if you got..

        • +2

Confirmed, took a Prime trial on account #2. Ordered.

          • @gadgetguy: I'd strongly suggest against doing this. I was warned for using multiple Amazon accounts in the past and threatened with banning.

  • Decisions…purchase now or wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday…

    • I did this the last 2 years and saw bugger all in large hard drive deals. It's always possible but….

    • +1

      I'd buy now.
You might get it under $400, but it's not worth potentially missing out completely if you need it.

this is a lot of linux distro storage.

    • Well someone has to save all the strong independent garden tools.

      • I mean linux distro's.

  • I bought mine in August for $384

  • Not quite as good as it has been ($21.36 / TB), but still great value at $22.84.

  • Would there be any issues removing the internal drive to go straight in a pc?

  • I think it will go down in price

  • Wow up to 18GB now!? I havne't looked at external HDs in yeaarrrs.

I am still happy with my 4gb lol

    • -1

      TB bruh

      • My bad, TB, typo. Still crazy at 18TB now. My 4TB been going on for maybe 8 years now, though I rarely store stuff.

  • And….it's gone.

    • +1

      Still works, $410.80 got 2

      • Make that 4 total, lol

        • Yep it briefly went up to $543 but is back down again.

Anyone on the fence better jump now.

          • @gadgetguy: These have come down to $384, but this is a great price. Super easy to shuck, just pull the curved cover off, no tools needed and clips are all unbroken.

            • @zCrimson: I bought at $384 too. I have 6 already so I'm well versed with these.

              • @gadgetguy: Yeah I've got 7 in a Synology NAS (1821+) and 1 that was a bare HC550, lucky that one seems to work fine, amazon packaging sucks. Shucking for the win!

Even cheaper now by 28c… So much for 'lightning deal'!

    • Likely exchange rate got better by a few cents.

      • True, and it's only $417 now. My point was that it was meant to be a 'lightning deal' which implied to me that it was a decent savings - $6 off a $400 item is just a bit over 1%. Camels chart is all over the place.. good price, but doesnt feel like a once in a lifetime bargain price when you dig into it a bit more

  • Good deal. Was just thinking about another drive. Thanks!

Waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday. These things were $384 at the last Prime day, so hoping a little better for the next big event.

Need a few more but happy to wait.

    • Dollars also tanked since then… can only hope.

  • Both my orders from today have been dispatched.

    • Mine too. I actually ordered the 20tb drive a hour or so earlier and tried to cancel it after buying this one but they couldn't cancel it before they shipped it, so I then tried to cancel this one and they shipped this one as well. Oh well, I guess I am having 38tb of free space now.

  • Coming up as $417 now

  • Thanks OP , pulled the trigger on this

  • Just ordered one. Hope it's CMR.

  • $408.04 now

  • Anyone else notice HDD's acting as a currency buffer for Amazon during global financial upsets? (As in consistently in time with local currency crashes, and over the last 5-6 years at least)
Don't know quite how it works for them, but they always seem to drop prices of these high capacity drives when the currency of the locally related Amazon 'XX' stores starts panicking. In this case with 3 price drops in the last 24hours, each coming soon after big headlines relating to the continued nosedive of the GBP.
Any econ majors care to chime in with some wisdom? (…or tin foil hatters with any neat theories to stoke the paranoia)

HDDs as a currency standard replacing gold.

My two drives arrived today - only 6 days since ordering. They were in the retail box but then placed in only a thin brown paper envelope, no padding. One had ripped and was about to fall out.

Anyway I've shucked them and they are in my 2 NASs, repairing. All looks fine so far.

    • Did you need to disable power pin 3?

Also did it come with OZ power supply since you got it so quickly?

      • No and no. It came with UK and EU adapters.

        • Interesting. thanks

  • +3

Mine arrived today. Same thoughts as gadgetguy — retail box is placed in a brown paper/plastic envelope, quite concerning as shipping damage could take place as there's not much cushioning inside the retail box and none at all outside it.

Power supply is UK with an EU adaptor, no AU plug.

I powered on mine with a power adaptor to test that it works and then shucked it. White label WD drive inside — WD180EDGZ. I haven't shucked before but followed this YouTube video and it was fairly easy.
