Aldi has a retractable hose for $49.99 coming up, I've had them for a couple of years, under the Qld sun, no issues.

    • I've had the same one for about 3 years - not in the sun at all, but has held up really well.

    • Does the hose kink?

      • Not super easily - but yes

  • Seems like a steal! Looks to be $225 in my local stores

Does anyone have a hose ranking
    ..eg hoselink, hozelock, Gardena etc?

    • Gardena is the best in my experience - albeit for a high cost. They are one of the few who backs up their products with warranties as long as you'd actually expect it to last.

For example, their hoses have 30 year warranties. And 5 years is common across the hose fitting, hose reels etc.

Of course with the other manufactures with one or two year warranties, you can always claim under Australian Consumer Law. But that is a hassle compared to a long warranty.

Hoselink is 1 year warranty for stuff like trigger sprayers - probably best avoided. Hozelock is better but seems pricey considering the warranty period offered.

Pope and Nylex have some decent warranty periods, but I have found their products hit and miss. Stuff like using poor grades of steel for springs inside a sprayer, or dissimilar metals together, which inevitably means it rusts out.

The long warranty of Gardena gear is a good sign they actually build it to last that long.

    • I have hoselink, apart from their warranties they are completely over rated.

      • I have a hoselink as well - feels like it has a lower flowrate than my Aldi one. The build quality feels better, and this one is out in the full sun. Have had it one year less than the Aldi one - no issues but is probably a bit over rated. Nothing exactly wrong with it though. Not sure what I was expecting to be honest!

        • Do you find its like a tug-of-war extending the hose (insert terrible puns)?

If I was 80 and frail, there is no way I could get that hose out.

          • @Richmond Tigers: Yeah the spring is a bit stronger than the others - not a major issue for me but not ideal for elderly I suppose.

  • I have this as well as a few bolt on gardena hoses and rate them highly. This one is very easy to install and seems sturdy enough.

  • Anyone have any positive comments on the Holman? https://www.bunnings.com.au/holman-20m-retractable-hose-reel…

      They positively suck.

Ive seen a few in action and they all seem to be going ok. The retraction on the hose is insane, if you let it go it takes off like a rocket. I have the gardena and it looks and feels alot more robust, not to mention the warranty. Depends on your use case thou.

I’ve had two Holmans for a few years (+3?). They ok for the price, and I’ve had no issues with the hose or breakage. It can be a bit hard to get it to “lock” so it doesn’t try and retract . Also as one of the others commented, they retract like a rocket.
I got what I paid for, and I’m happy enough with that.
(Saying that, I would have paid $115 for Gardena instead if it was an open at the time)

    • I've had 2 x 30m units over the past 2 years. Both purchased at the same time and place from bunnings and both are stored under cover out of direct sunlight.

The retracting mechanism broke in the first one at 12 months so the unit would leave 3m of hose limp on the driveway. I returned it under warranty.

The second one is still going alright though I'm weary when the hose slows down right before it's fully retracted.

I'm not going to buy another Holman. The Bunnings reviews were right.

Just found/got one of these 20m for $40 at local Bunnings. Couldn't believe my luck! Thanks again OP 😁
