The dynamic flex doesn't come in F fit. You can buy one and take it into an RM williams store and they will exchange it for you.

      • +1

Does that mean you could buy any of these and then take it to a RMW store and exchange it for the size you actually need?

        • +1

          Curious about this too?

        • +1

Yes and yes, I confirmed with them over the phone as I am after a standard comfort craftsman in an F fit and they said you can exchange there as long as they have it in stock.

          • +5

@thewiseone: I believe its been reported on OzB they've cracked down on this given Iconic and other online retailers have been heavily discounting and having riff-raff turning up in-store for change of mind / sizing etc.

            • @chickenchipsgravy: What's the view on exchanging if purchased from David Jones?

I managed to get a pair today but not sure of the size and definitely want the chestnut colour

Do you just call customer care to see if they will do the exchange?

          • @thewiseone: can you change the colour as well lol if say i wanted black

    • yeah David Jones never gives an F

If you’re heading oversea, TRS makes this a great deal.

    • How does this work? 10% GST back?

      • Yeah $36 back.

        • -3

Only if you're a foreign tourist leaving Australia to go back home to live

          • +1

            @x x: no it doesn't.

            Quote from TRS website.

"International travellers (including Australians) might be able to claim a GST (Goods and Services Tax) and WET (Wine Equalisation Tax) refund for some goods bought in Australia that you then take out of the country with you on a plane or ship."

            • +2

@tomleonhart: This is correct but you need to declare the goods on your way back into the country and the total value is capped at $900.

    • +1

I thought Trs for permanently taking the item out of the country. This would be cheating if you brought it back

      • It's only cheating if you come back with other goods worth more than $900.

  • +1

    These fit like a glove.

    • +25

Not true. These boots aren't comfortable on my hands.

    • +8

A glove would be a terrible fit on your foot. I would suggest they fit like a shoe.

    • As they say, no glove, no love. Hope it fits nicely and you get all the love

  • Is there any other colour available?

    • +1

I looked. They’re available at full price 😅😂

  • Has anyone found a vegan leather alternative to RM style Chelsea boots?

    • +1

I think Blundstone might makes some chelsea boots in vegan leather. Out of curiosity, for what reasons are you seeking a vegan version?

      • +2

Yeah my missus wears vegan docs, I always question what is the point when the cows already dead, do you want them to just chuck the leather in the bin? She also complains that the vegan pleather isn't malleable and hurts her feet. Price of being a vegan I spose.

        • Yeah, I was going to mention that all leather is basically a by-product of the meat industry. I guess if she wants nothing to do with it then fair enough. Closest thing I could find from a quick google search: https://www.blundstone.com.au/womens-boots/womens-vegan-boot…

          • @Stingy Student: The Blundstones are an eyesore unfortunately, I am after something that’s more dress shoe-esque.

Also on the by-product comment, >10% of the value of a cow is derived from its hide. Plus calves being raised solely for their hide is morally reprehensible in my eyes and a bit hard to contribute to.

Views are my own and I know people like to make themselves feel better by saying “well the cows already dead….”

            • +2

@pn94: @pn94 thanks for your views, always nice to hear a different opinion.

I could be wrong, but I would imagine very few calves are raised solely for their hide as it would be too expensive. As you indicated, if the hide is ~10% of the cost of an animal, then you're looking at 10x leather cost if solely using the hide. If the rest of the animal goes to waste, then I would agree that this is reprehensible.

A separate point that I'd be interested to hear your opinion on is that most people buying RMs should expect a decade of regular use out of them with proper care. Does the longevity of the product soften any of the environemntal and/or ethical considerations in your mind?

              • +1

@Stingy Student: I own a pair of RM’s I purchased 4 years ago, can’t fault them they are great shoes and have held up better than any other shoe I’ve owned.

I misspoke, I agree calves are not raised solely for their hide but a greater degree of their worth is tied into the value of their hide.

Only from a personal ethics perspective I’m trying to reduce my consumption of animal products whether it be food or clothing.

                • +1

@pn94: @pn94 yeah that makes sense. Also good on you (not trying to be sarcastic) on reducing your consumption of animal products.

The only other option that I could think of is whether some Indonesian made to order (MTO) brands stock vegan leather. Check out Benzein Shoes on instagram - they make some nice MTO chelsea boots that will probably cost you similar to RMW.

          • +2

@Stingy Student: This is really nit-picky, but technical leather is a co-product rather than a by-product, which happens once a by-product become a "significant" percentage of the total value of the animal. Although in most cases, it's not directly killing cows, it is still financially supporting the industry that's profiting from their meat/milk.

In saying that, I'm a vegan and am very torn about buying leather (specifically products that require comfort and durability). From an environmental perspective, I'd much rather buy something that lasts a long time and is repairable, and RMs tick that box. On the other hand, it feels ethically wrong to me to be wearing animal skins.

In a similar like of thinking, I was deciding between a synthetic vs down backpacking quilt and ended up going with the down because the lifespan of synthetic material doesn't even compare, and I'd be throwing a bunch of plastic in landfill in a few years time.

            • +1

@Never pay retail: @Never pay retail good point on leather technically being a co-product - that makes sense.

I also like your point on weighing up the environmental vs ethical considerations of animal products.

              • +1

@Stingy Student: came in for the banter, but end up learning something new from a very well mannered discussion between two adults (assumption).

what a breath of fresh air.

    • If I found some in the future, I will post it here.

  • +1

    Cheers OP

  • Nothing available (cant add to cart)

  • I hate dynamic flex and wouldn't buy them again personally, however, at this price they are worth a crack.

    • Curious to know why? I assumed these are more comfortable than the standard Craftsman because of the rubber soles.

      • +8

yes and no, the innersole and the hybrid outsole is pretty decent comfort-wise and certainly much more comfortable than my leather sole boots. However, they aren't really any more comfortable than the comfort craftsmen (rubber sole) and they are significantly less durable and you've got to be more careful in the wet.

If they're all the same price I would buy the comfort craftsmen nine times out of ten.

        • -1

Thanks mate, looks like I dodged a bullet - will wait for a deal on the CC's

        • Yeah I agree. I tried both Dynamic Flex and Comfort, and the Comfort is so much better.
The Dynamic Flex just feels really weird. I think you can change the inners, but the comforts just felt right for me. each to there own. Try on a pair before you spend the money.

        • What makes the dynamic Flex significantly less durable than comfort craftsmen?

          • +2

@Salty Pretzel: Water can get trapped between the rubber and leather sole which can generally cause issues & I've personally split a pair of my dynamic flex soled boots in half (I don't suggest that this would necessarily be the average persons experience). I love the leather leather soled RM's but it just isn't practical in the wet at all compared to rubber, they are slippery as all (profanity) on any tiled surface and realistically you need to give them more care and conditioning. I've also got a pair of stockman's with brass nailed leather soles, which I'm not sure RM's still offer this sole option and are the least comfortable of all my boots.

Again, for $400 I wouldn't be too picky I guess (given the current retail prices), however, if they are all the same price my strong recommendation is to stick to the rubber soled variant (comfort craftsmen).

tl;dr - if you've only got the money for one pair, I'd suggest that pair has rubber soles to get the most versatile and longest lasting option.

            • @Bargain Slut: Thank you for your reply.

You've made me think about returning the pair I ordered and to wait for a deal on the comfort craftsmen. But who knows if they will go down to $400.

              • +1

@Salty Pretzel: For $400, if they fit you properly, I'd suggest sticking to the ones you have.

The dynamic flex are not a bad boot, just not as good as the comfort in my opinion. There's probably people out there that will swear black and blue that I don't know what I'm talking about, as with all things YMMV.

      • +1

I've only have a pair of the comfort craftsmans (so take my opinion with a grain of salt), but from what I've read in forums it's kind of a trade off between squish, traction, and greater outsole longevity with rubber soles, compared to leather which is more flexible, breathable and after breakin will mold to an individuals foot better. I'm pretty sure comfort craftsman is the most popular choice in part because of the rubber outsole and poron layer (squishy bit) in the midsole. Dynamic flex fall somewhere in the middle ground being a combination outsole, but their main attraction is removable innersole so that people with orthoddics can wear them.

      • +1

Mine have a horrible squeak every time I step in them. Drives me mad.

        • Try some good quality wool socks (e.g. humphrey law or RM which pretty sure is unbranded Humphrey Law anyway) - solves the issue for me compared to cheap cotton socks. Also might go away after break in. Other option I've heard is a little talcum powder - though never tried myself.

        • +1

Mine were fine, then after I had them re-heeled one of them started squeaking, then after they were next re-heeled it was fine again

          • @papagoose: Hmm sometimes leather stacked on leather squeaks. @papagoose are your boots leather soled? Pretty sure RMW but some thin cardboard like material between the leather heelstack and leather sole to stop it squeaking - wondering if that might have been the issue after resole.

            • @Stingy Student: @Stingy Student I have a dynamic flex craftsman so it’s rubber on the heel stack

        • +2

I had horrible squeaking too with a pair I bought online. In my case it was because even though they felt comfortable, they were actually the wrong size and too big for my feet.

I got sized up in store and bought a new pair which has no squeaking at all

        • +2

Might be a loose shank. Bring it into the store to send for a warranty assessment. I got a free resole because of the squeak.

  • Anyone have a screenshot/photo of the lower price?

  • Looks like this deal is gone… back to $649

    • Must be a different boot. This one said $595 originally.

      • Not quite, RM increased their RRP as of 4 July. These were probably the last of DJ’s batch that they purchased at the lower price before it went up

  • oh bother I missed it.

    • Same, but I'm also stuck with $400 DJs gift cards now :(

        10G is still in stock.

  • Thanks OP, purchased.

It looks like 10G is still in stock btw.

  • 8G and 9G seem to be in stock too

  • +1

    Annddd cancelled. Urgh.

  • So weird how the DJ website says absolutely nothing about out of stock on the page. Just removes the 'buy' button. Have to figure it out yourself

  • how are these compared to hush puppies ? :3 ?

    • Don't have Dynamic Flex but have the Craftsmans (difference is if you have super flat feet, take the flex otherwise pretty much the same). Imo, more comfy than Hush Puppies. Durability is incomparable, however take price point into account (Hush Puppies regularly go on sale during Boxing Day and are significantly cheaper).

If you choose to buy, highly recommend getting fitted instore before purchasing to ensure that its the perfect fit, or you're going to be in a fair bit of pain trying to break it in (which they claim you shouldn't but we all know better)

When I first started using them, 198 back in 1998. When all crew started using them, 250. It was like that for a while then, some celebrity started using them , 339 !
It's gotten out of control. It's really soft leather that needs upkeep and the heels need constant changing. If you skip a beat, you lose the heel if it wears to the skin and you lose the shoe. Not overated but needs constant care and upkeep. Not an everyday shoe, stylish but uncomfortable.

    • Which other brands would you recommend over these four value and cost? Thanks

    • While I agree with all your points, I have had a pair of RMs for around 10 years. They only got sporatic use, but since getting a new office job I have been wearing them every day for the past 12 months and have had no issues at all.

So while YMMV, if you have a desk job these will last a a lot longer then you may think based on the above post. They are built really well so they only fall apart from wear, not from glue or other perishable materials failing like that used in cheaper dress shoes.

  • +1

These are back in stock. Multiple sizes available.

  • All gone again :(

    Back in stock again!
