Vodafail? Really? I've been stung by the company's poor network but it's childish to to namecall the company in a bargain post.

If you were really stung by them, you would be calling them all sorts of names…

    • Indeed it's not necessary. Title changed to show the correct company name.

  • vodafail? wheres that =P

Pretty much everywhere outside of the CBD … or even up in most offices to be honest … ;)

decent deal, any idea how much it costs to unlock through vodafone/through eBay?

    • Check DC Unlocker, around 12-13 to unlock.

  • i think this deal is better https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/72690 - bigw

or pay $39.50 for pocket wifi2 with 3gb included :)

    edit: beaten!

  • $39.50 in BigW with 3GB data is a much better option.

  • Minimum spend of $53 doesn't really translate to much of a bargain while the BigW one is current.

  • Only problem is that BigW has really limited stock. I couldn't find it at either of my local stores.

    • I got one from Big W South Yarra. they had plenty in stock

      • I went across there this morning (its literally next door to me) and they said they had no stock.

E585 is pocketwifi 1, not pocket wifi 2. That will not work with this model.

    • Weirdly enough, they actually both have the same model number. I couldn't tell you if the unlocker will work, though.

      • If you look at the sticker near the IMEI numbers, it says E585v2 or something.
Got mine unlocked after using DCunlocker.

      • Pocket Wifi 2 is model E585U-82

The instructions on monkeycheese definitely don't work with V2 - looked into that page last year when we were trying to get it unlocked.

I got one of these a month ago when they were $39 on the "month to month" plan. A few points:

    • The modem/wifi router itself is good because it supports both UMTS/HSPA 850 and 900, unlike those supplied by other telcos which tend to support one or the other of those frequencies.

    • Mine unlocked for free on the Vodafone website, after the SIM had been activated. Had previously read comments about this being a hit and miss thing (perhaps being post-paid can make a difference). So YMMV. And you need to have a non-Vodafone SIM handy to proceed with the unlock.

    • When I called to cancel my $19 month to month plan before the end of the first month, I was offered a $5 100MB/mo plan with $3 credit for the first 6 months (so $2/month). Maybe useful for some.

    • One "trap" here is the $20/GB excess usage fee. The month to month plans are an attractive alternative to pre-paid customers because they offer the higher quotas of post-paid plans, while not requiring a 12-24 month contract. But it comes at the cost of having to keep a closer eye on your quota - wouldn't recommend it to the less tech-savvy, or if kids/teens will have access.

    • I did a bit of experimentation trying to figure out how the poorly defined "1 MB increment" quota thing works, and it seems to be based on rounding up at the end of a "session". So if you have an e-mail client using a few KB checking an inbox every 30 mins, those won't each be counted as 1 MB, unless each instance involves starting and terminating a session. In the fixed locations I used it (Sydney CBD and outer-metropolitan Sydney), the modem had no trouble maintaining a session for >24 hours. The maximum connection idle time setting is 3600 seconds, though, so if nothing accesses the 'net for an hour, it'll disconnect.

Sorry about the "wall of text", hope it helps someone :D

  • Silly question here new to mobile wifi what's the advantage to unlocking? What do you do with it once its unlocked does it mean that you are able to make it work on someone else network that has better coverage like telstra? Sorry if its a silly question I've always used wired ADSL connections

For this one (Pocket Wifi 2), yes, once unlocked, you can use a Telstra SIM (to use the nextG network). It does support 850Mhz (NextG). However, it is only up to 7.2Mbps (whereas Telstra's pocket wifi Elite supports HSPA+ (14.4Mbps)).

  • I recently finish my contract with 3. I called them to cancel it as i was no longer using it. The customer Rep. gave me the opportunity to keep this number on mobile broadband with free pocket wi-fi device. I am getting 2 Gb data and after concession, I am only paying 5$ a month for 12 months. GREAT DEAL!!!!
