Do not download it is malware

    • ?

    • Why do you say this?

      • +9

CCleaner was hacked in 2017. Their official software had malicious code. They claimed it was some hacker and they have fixed the code since.

      • +21

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CCleaner#Malware_infection

This is no longer the case, but it has permanently damaged the software's reputation.

Note that Ccleaner is owned by Avast! since 2017.

        • +10

Some would say the acquisition by Avast is cancerous. Avast has a history of aggressive data collection typical of your average multi-national arrogance.

CCleaner automatically updates programs installed on the system to close security holes before they are used by cybercriminals.

LOL, imagine giving a third party tool access to all your program installations. Notice how they include "cybercriminals" scare tactics in the same sentence. Quick! Sign up now or the boogie man is gonna get you!

Clears history and cookies when you are not using a web browser.

There is no reason to manage browser cookies and history from outside the browser. Modern browsers can do this fine without help from dodgy Avast tools.

I recommend BleachBit instead as a free, open-source alternative.

  • +5

I used the free version for close to a decade and can recommend this. Not to sure exactly sure what you get for getting a license. But its good software.

Inject instant speed into your machine by removing the unnecessary files taking up room on your hard drive.

Removing unnecessary file taking up room on a hard drive does not "inject instant speed".

CCleaner has a rocky history. https://www.kaspersky.com/resource-center/threats/ccleaner-m…

All in all, I would avoid.

    • +5

Not sure why I got negged for the above? My post is completely factual.

    • +1

i was so triggered by the "inject instant speed" aha

    • +3

I agree that the 'inject speed' is not factual on modern day systems, but im not sure i agree that due to their software being hacked into once in 2017 makes the software un-trustable.

      • Think about it, would you really trust a company that promises to safeguard your data and deliver the most optimum performance for you? Say you do but then it gets hacked, would you still trust it? I would do a u-turn and try to go the most opposite direction as i can. If it's really a trustworthy company it wouldn't allow anyone to hack it like that.

Any company that falls to a hack is utterly trash in my eyes, what guarantees it won't happen again? Nothing but their word and your (not u but i mean the person using it) naivete!

        CCleaner? Trash. Optus? Trash.

        • +2

Agreed. Additionally, you don't really need CCleaner. Modern OSs and browsers pretty much render this thing useless.

Agree that both are trash - but you do need a carrier though. I may consider Optus at a future point after they have had a while to fix their shit.

          • @b2dz: Exactly. Cleaning temp files and such are extremely easy to do and only take a couple of seconds.

Indeed i need a carrier, too busy to leave it so im staying for now.

        • +1

The hack was started before Avast acquired CCleaner. Now that they are owned by an antivirus company it's unlikely it will happen again.

    • +1

Absolutely avoid,, you don't need another piece of junk to clear cookies and temp files

  • Initial discount? So reverts to $47au a year next year?

  • +5

It's a $1 for one year then $48 afterwards no thanks

    • +5

      you can cancel it beforehand.

    • There's a cancellation link in the email… you can click that straight away and it only affects renewals not current subscription.

  • +5

Thanks op, got it, $1 is a steal for this.

  • +12

What a pointless piece of software designed to prey on uninformed people, modern OS don't get slowdowns from 'junk files', any temp files are cleaned up automatically after a short period of time. I also guarantee windows defender will run circles around whatever junk AV this comes bundled with. Wouldn't be worth it even if it was free, there's enough telemetry out there as is, I don't need to give out more of my info than I already need to.

    • +1

modern OS don't get slowdowns from 'junk files'

True, unless you've filled your hard drive up.

any temp files are cleaned up automatically after a short period of time.

Spoken like a programmer! In the real world, there's plenty of crappy code doesn't clean up after itself. But your first point makes this moot ;-)

windows defender will run circles around whatever junk AV this comes bundled with.

As with most AV products the cure is worse then the disease. Malwarebytes is the probably the exception.

I still find it useful for them to delete unused registry keys.

      • Yeah, nobody seems to mention the registry cleaning… It's a hassle going through the registry to delete things manually

        • Why do you need to do this? And how would you trust CCleaner to do it properly and not mess something up?

      • Which is something you never need to do.

  • +11

Crap Cleaner was fairly good back in the day.
It’s essentially trashware now, not necessary and doesn’t provide any improvement, it’s fairly deprecated and actual use case is quite small, sure it can be quicker than a Ctrl + Shift + Delete in your 20 browsers but that’s it.

  • For checking file space on drives, are there any apps around that are better than Windirstat?

    • +7

I've been using TreeSize free for years at work. There's a portable version that doesn't require an install.

No reason really to buy the full version unless you want some of the advanced features/network share scanning.

    • +6

I'm a big fan of WizTree

      • +2

I'll second WizTree https://diskanalyzer.com/ . It's ridiculously faster than WinDirStat, both for the fastest M.2 SSDs and old HDDs. Plus, WizTree is still actively developed while WinDirStat's last update was 15 years ago in 2007, the same year Windows Vista was released.

        • Good to know.

Been a long time windirstat user.

    • Yes, all of them!

  • +2

The $1 code doesn't work Mac, there goes $1 I won't get back

    • Could you explain? I have a Mac. Is this windows only?

      • Title says both but link is only for Windows

      • Yes, tittle said both. You can buy the max one but it’s full price. $1 is only valid on PC. I tried the code from purchase and it wasn’t valid on my Mac.

    • yep, title needs to be revised or a link for Mac. The one I tried for Mac came to normal pricing

  • I used to use this back in the day as many other did and was not aware of its more recently history! I think ill avoid it as it doesn't really seem necessary to have anymore

  • -1

    No free no deal

    • No free no deal

I gather you don't see that many deals here then

  • If you want privacy don't use a pc lol, everything you do is logged somewhere permanently unless it's physically destroyed. The government departments know this and destroy old computers.

  • +3

Back in the day it CCleaner was great, until they updated it and running a scan almost bricked my system. That was maybe 15 years ago and I haven't touched it since. Lesson learned. This is Windows XP era stuff now.

  • Mildly useful software but it seems to have a new version every few days and keeps giving pop up warnings if you don't install them. Also loves to embed itself into your system and start up directory. I found it best to just install, use, uninstall every now and then rather than try to live with it long term. Certainly wouldn't pay for it.

    • +1

Um just turn updates off and stop it from running at boot?

      • Turn updates off and it still gives you pop up reminders about all the versions you've skipped.

And when you update it puts itself back in the start menu by default, having to remove it every time gets very annoying when it requires updates so frequently.

Maybe things have improved since then, like I said I try not to use it consistently any more.

  • +1

I remember when CCleaner was popular back in the Windows XP days.

Rule of thumb, don't touch your registry.
Registry cleaners have been known to remove necessary entries which can brick your PC, doesn't happen often but it does happen.
Back in the day when mechanical drives were still the main choice of HDD cleaning your registry made a slight impact to the speed of your PC. With SSD's it's not really necessary anymore.

  • I’m a macOS user. Do I also need this?

    • FYI: The offer is only for Windows

  • +1

This is great for old slow machines. It's part of the tweaking / optimising process.

Sure I could do all the things without CCleaner but it's convenient.

  • +2

CCleaner old versions were great. Nice time-saving tool. Not so now.

If only the masses also knew about all Antivirus programs being a nice way to compromise your system far more easily too. I guess this fact will drift down to the masses in a few years, if we are lucky.

  • I hear so many have been hacked in the past or have shady past. Which antivirus or total security software is the best?

  • +2

No longer necessary as recent versions of Windows do their own tidying up of registry and shortcuts etc. Also malware risk. Ie pass this one!

    • +1

Windows doesn't do any registry cleaning. Which is fine, since you never need to clean it anyway.

  • -1

DO NOT COMMIT to this. It is a 'bait and Switch'. (click on the $1.00 purchase price to pay with PayPal and it reverts to full price 1-year subscription of $54.95).
This is NOT the CCleaner of yester-year. A lot of security issues with it since it was taken over by Avast software back in 2017.. Back then it nearly ruined a PC which had to be cleaned completely and restored from backup. It took awhile, and I received some compensation, but not enough to cover costs or the time lost. CCleaner is just a vehicle used to push Avast security software if you don't mind that kind of crap nagging you now and again.

  • I use this while blocking its' internet access. Useful for cleaning up system/program crash dump logs which can take up space overtime.

  • Just get BleachBit and save yourself the $$$.

    https://www.bleachbit.org/

  • I replaced CCleaner a while back and been using Glarys Utilities instead. Free and works really well.

    • Wise Disk Cleaner is much better. Glary Utilities has received no major updates for many years and doesn't work well.

  • A great product if you like having your registry regularly corrupted. Pointless.
