20kg Plastic Weight Set $32 @ Kmart (C&C Only)

560

I find weights are generally priced at $3-4/kg. At $1.60/kg, this seems like a rather good deal (for one after a pair of 5/10kg dumbbells), even if not on "sale."

Note: The 20kg seems to include the iron bars and collars.

Update: I've just been to Big W, and noticed they've got the same for the exact same price (different brand, of course). Didn't buy it, in light of the comments here. Besides, as I said, it's not a "sale," so no rush.

    $3-4\kg

for proper plates and up… not concrete or similar filled plastic shells.

Plastic spin locks I find also loosen real easy on anything except the lightest weights.

Price is decent though just don’t drop ‘em !

I came here to say this, so have a +1.

    • +1

Is that what they're made of, concrete in plastic shells? I see…

  • +14

I made the mistake of buying two of these… The quality is atrocious. They're also very bulky. I guess they're ok for a beginner…

    • That's literally what I was going to do.. Thanks for the feedback

    • +2

Can confirm that they are much bulkier than their metal counterparts. Do not recommend.

  • +1

    Why would i want 8 x 1kg

    • +3

They are good for steadily increasing your weights over time

    • +3

So you can squat 8 plates for reps?

    • +1

2 x dumbdell bars = 2x1kg each end. 8 sounds like a lot but isn't. 4x2.5 and 4x5 as well would be a good mix.

  • +1

Low quality. Get 4kg, 6kg and 10kg individual dumbbells from Kmart Target instead

Sure I lift - I lift the wicked wings to my mouth for reps. The do a few curls as I’m chugging away at my 2L farmers Union iced coffee (the GOAT of all iced coffees don’t @ me)

Agreed with the other commenter. These spin locks are really easy to loosen up. You get what you pay for! These got me through lockdown when everyone was scalping gym equipment :^)

    • +4

I kinda expected to be able to pick up a whole bunch of gear for cheap now that many people have gone back to traditional gyms but heaps of fb and scum tree listers still trying to get more than retail For their used gear - it’s actually insane.

  • +1

I have these from many years ago. Plus - cheap. Negative- you can only get 2x2.5kg plus a 1kg on each side ie max weight is 12kg plus bar. If that’s what you need then it’s fine. But I suspect most people will quickly get past that for most lifts; no point having a DB just for lateral raises

    Spin lock does need care

Concrete weights will break if you drop them

However the weight plates are cheap if you want to add them to your weighted dips or pull ups I guess. Although the Kmart kettlebell is more versatile and does the same job

  • +3

Really only use these for single arm bicep curls and lateral raises which they work perfectly fine for. Max weights as stated before is around 12 kgs on 1 dummbell. Spin locks work fine if you don't drop the weight.

    20kg Plastic Weight Set $32

I find the plastic ones are too light.

You're better off getting the 20kg iron ones if you want to build muscle.

    • You’d probably hate featherweight boxing then JV; too close to pillow fighting?? 🤔

    • But are the 20kg iron weights heavier than the 20kg plastics weights.

  • +1

If you start with them, you will find yourself looking for heavier ones within 1 month. I've made those mistakes and now I'm always running around trying to find proper dumbbells/cheap weight plate, while I could be more ambitious and buy a whole set in the beginning (I know it's not easily foreseen)

  • Can anyone recommend a better, metal alternative for these?

I'm currently on 20kg per bell (these are 10kg x2) and need to get something heavier.

    • Can anyone recommend a better, metal alternative for these?

Weight is weight, get whatever weighs what you need and lift it.

Personally I'd be spending the extra on the hex dumbbells eg Kmart: https://www.kmart.com.au/category/sport-&-outdoor/shop-by-ca…
They work out to about $3-$3.50/kg which is as good as you can expect, and the Hex dumbells will last forever, wont come undone, and won't roll around on the floor. There is a reason why most gyms use them

      • +1

With respect, that's not quite the full picture.

I've got a plastic bar with that 20kg, and I don't trust putting heavier plates on. I don't want to get simple hex bells, because I'm trying to steadily increase the weight instead spending >$70 every time I want a heavier weight. I'm sure there are adjustable sets with metal spinners that don't entirely suck out there …

        • I'm sure there are adjustable sets with metal spinners that don't entirely suck out there …

In my experience they all suck because anything that screws will unscrew while you are throwing it around, and you don't want that. That's why no gym I've ever been to ever has screw locks on barbells, they are all clamps. And for dumbbells they are all one piece because anything that can come apart will come apart when you don't want it to.

spending >$70 every time I want a heavier weight.

Good or cheap, you're going to have to make a choice here.

          • +1

@1st-Amendment: I'm not at all in the habit of throwing around my weights, though I can see why that's an issue for gyms.

I'm not asking for something cheap, I'm saying that even an expensive adjustable set is going to be cheaper than 5-10 hex dumbbells of different weights.

            • @Grazz989:

I'm not at all in the habit of throwing around my weights

By 'throw' I mean move. The constant up, down, in, out, back, forward etc loosens the screw then they rattle around which is why they all suck.

I'm saying that even an expensive adjustable set is going to be cheaper than 5-10 hex dumbbells of different weights

Hence why most people join a gym. It is the cheapest of the 'good' options. Same goes for a bench or rack. If you get a cheap one it will twist and bend under any serious weight. Just my opinion, but if you are doing something seriously, you want good gear. So that either means a gym or fork out for decent home equipment.
Sorry if that's not the answer you are looking for but when you ask a question sometimes you got to be prepared for an answer you don't like :)

Another cheap option if you have one of those monkey bars setups at your nearest park is to do some serious calisthenics. You can achieve a considerable amount with just throwing your own body weight around.

@1st-Amendment: Ended up buying this: https://www.catch.com.au/product/30kg-cast-iron-dumbbell-set…

As I suspected, there was a well-priced and perfectly adequate answer to this problem.

If I have to retighten the spinners every once in a while, or worst case apply some blue loctite tape, I'll still be way ahead of buying $500 worth of hex bells to get the same range of weights, let alone the space involved.

    • Don't be shy about buying second hand weights from Facebook or Gumtree. Doesn't matter if they're a little rusty, that cleans off.

      • I did take a look, but the deals weren't fantastic when you factor in having to go pick it up from the middle of nowhere. Funnily enough, the best deal was a guy selling one of these: https://www.catch.com.au/product/30kg-cast-iron-dumbbell-set…

For $15 less than the brand new, free shipping price. So I just bought that instead lol.

The red plastic spin locks will be loosen soon if you turn it tight.
On the other hand its dangerous if you dont turn it tight for dumbbell.

    Good for beginners.

    I had one from BigW

  • these are better :https://www.kmart.com.au/product/dumbbell-set-42190196/

  • Is that 20kg each? Tin of beans would be better
