Bought one last time, buying another one this time

  • Is this revision compliant with Australian safety standards?

    • +11

Nah, I don't think Xiaomi power strips were ever 'compliant' with Australian safety standards. Though I have owned 3 USB-A port versions for many years and it never caused any issues while Arlec one I bought from Bunnings started to have dead USB ports after a year or so.

Every deal on these items has a lengthy discussion about 'compliant issues' along with voiding home insurance. The general consensus is that these power boards are very reliable and long-lasting despite the lack of compliance with Australian safety standards and that voiding home insurance is a myth. YMMV

      • Mine blew up when I boiled the kettle on it

        • Sorry to hear your experience. In my old workplace, power boards kept blowing up multiple times. Turns out, people had a sandwich presser, kettle and microwave on a single power board, exceeding 2kw. Did you have any other appliances plugged into the power board? If kettle was the only thing and it blew up, I can see how that would make you not want to touch this power board.

        • +4

Rookie mistake. Next time put the kettle next to the power board.

      • Long time user, no problems as well - always have small draw items plugged in. Sorry to have missed this.

I swear this product has the same question EVERY SINGLE THREAD!

      • The fact it does, says enough for most people. That's kind of the point.

  • Question:Is this compliant with australian standards for electrical safety?

    Answer:No

    30 August 2022

    • +2

Is this compliant on 30 September 2022?

  • Will you ever get a black version of this? Cheers

    • +1

I won't, dust on black is more visible.

      • I have some of the old black ones, can't stand white power cables. It's my AV background!

        • +1

You may need to find the hidden socket. See the thread with (currently) a cliffhanger below.

  • I would recommend to use this with a hidden wall socket only. It's so dangerous, especially when you have small kids

    • hidden wall socket ?

      • +1

        Behind the tv cabinet?

        • +5
          • @m9: That wall is obviously not hidden, I saw it straight away.
            Unless there's another wall… wallception?

        • Yes, kind of that.

    • +1

      What's dangerous about it?

      • My understanding is that is is not compliant because it does not have insulated pins on the plug

        • Oh, that - forgot about that. Was thinking of the board itself.
They conveniently don't have a photo of the input end.

        • +3

It’s actually safer than AU standard ones. It’s got internal pin cover to prevent kids from sticking their fingers in

  • Seems like the coupons are all gone. Marked as expired.

  • I like this Q&A

Q: Is the universal output suitable for EU plug?
    A: Yes, it's a universal adapter

The EU like to go on their own on some things, but I think leaving the universe isn't one of them.

    • And how much are you charging for this free weekend?

      • It's free

  • Still looks to be available at $25 from here:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B085TCDCMM/

    • +2

That's a different product unfortunately. Without the USB-C port.

  • missed

  • I have the non-USB-C port version. There is a feeling of quality but I still think the on/off switch is loose-feeling and not ideal. Still working after years however, so that's good.

  • damn! this is the 3rd time i missed it!

  • not really suggest one without AU standards, once your house is burned by this, the insurance company definitely will try to argue this point.
