Why Am I Always Tailgated by These Specific Drivers?

When I am driving around town in my OzBargain approved Toyota, I always seem to be tailgated by these specific drivers listed below.

Jeep Grand Cherokee & BMW any x series.

I note, I always keep left unless overtaking on any roads. I always stick to my speed limit as well.

I encounter this behaviour from these specific drivers quite a lot!

Any other drivers out there, experience this from those Jeep or BMW drivers listed above? (Not saying they all do it)

Or are you specifically tailgated by certain model vehicles?
Interested to know:)

  • Happened to me today. Beemer, S3. Auburn, NSW. Lebanese male, fully decked out, all alone in his white 'sports' car. Got pissed off and started tailgating me when I stopped at a stop sign. He just rolled right through it. Waited for a dip in the road (downhill) and FLOORED IT past me, over double white solid lines. Only to stop at the lights ahead of us 2 seconds later. 😁
    So amusing…

I could have messed with him in my 2.0L turbo diesel Golf, but… I didn't. I saw the lights. He didn't. All he could see was the rear of my car. Poor drivers.

  • Not sure about specific cars, but tailgaters are always, always d**kheads.

  • Everybody wants to film you pee.
    Youtube still has spare capacity.

Driving north on the M1 from Sydney I typically get tailgated by tradies. Frequently P plated ones and in the wet.

I'm in the right lane, sure, but I'm up with the flow of traffic and do move left when there is a break in the left/middle lane to let others (including them) through. (Although there is not really anywhere to go).

I do not know what they expect me to do when I'm up with the flow of traffic in the right lane and there is no space in the left/middle lanes.

Not aware of any specific car or type, but it's always P platers!

  • Not sure what roads you drive on but its usually the holden and ford utes with a P plate for me. And they almost always have one arm out the window.

Don't brake check, but reduce your speed to a few k's under the speed limit. If they get closer, drop it a little more.
If they back off, reward the positive behaviour by slowly speeding up again.

If they are going to act like animals, treat them like animals. If a dog can understand positive reinforcement, so can these drivers too.

So you're blocking the right lane when you could've moved to the left?

      • +1

Nope… in the left and they STILL tailgate. If I was in the right it would be my fault, clearly. Mind you, at 80km/h speed limit or less there is no requirement to keep left. I do of course (regardless of speed limit) out of courtesy, but jut sayin…

        • I never hog the right lane too even when there's no legal requirement to move left.

You probably do under the limit by a lot and get tailgated

  • I'm not a slow driver and have lane discipline (20 years of experience in a country where that's actually a thing). I drive a Hilux, but often get tailgated in any lane and any speed by;
Anyone in a pickup with bull bars (ironic as they have poor brakes and will do more damage that they have to pay for)
Trucks (death machines driven by semi-conscious beings who seem to think causing carnage is normal collateral damage)
Any European vehicle - BMW, Merc, Audi, Land Rover etc
    Jeeps
Anyone driving a (Chinese) MG - must be trying to prove something
Low spec Mazda 3's and Mitsubishi Lancers
Strangely enough…small cars (Yaris size), so close I can only see their roof in my mirror
Anyone in a Commodore or Falcon

Hence front and rear dashcams. Mostly this is in West Melbourne and the ring road, which could be a big factor

  • Do NOT worry about Volkswagens. By the time they try to save their camera footage their software has crashed and car needs 3 days in workshop.

Probably because your car speedo is calibrated LOWER than those other models?

Vast majority of cars in Australia are calibrated low, so when it says you're doing 110, you're actually doing 100. You can check this with a GPS speed app on a straight road.

Maybe those other cars are annoyed you're going slow?

My gps showed 98/99 when my speedo said 100.

My gps also shows 59 when my speedo is 60.

So no, they are breaking the law by tailgating.

Well into the future, no one will be "driving", it will all be automated, goodbye bumgaters, tailgaters and speedos….but hello to hackers πŸ˜‹ and unexplained AI crashes.

    • Hackers? It is a feature …

To quote the infamous libertine Benjamin Franklin "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

    • i would actually prefer AI driven cars, no more morons doing 60 in 80 zones

  • Overspeeding and underspeeding are both frustrating. Today I was driving from Oberon to Sydney. I had a car in front who was doing 67-70 in a 100 zone. It was really frustrating. Road users just need to remember that roads are shared area and the purpose of all the road rules are to ensure safety and keep traffic flowing. In this link (https://www.news.com.au/national/courts-law/massive-fine-for…)- it was said that someone in WA was fined for doing 28km below limit in freeway. By all means stick to the left lane if you have to go 20km lower than speed limit. But if it is a one lane road, then please do not create a queue of cars behind by driving at 20km below limit.

    • @G K some states have created those issues by limiting L and P plate drivers' maximum speeds. A ridiculous policy!

  • Just remove all bumper stickers and nobody gets close anymore trying to read them. Else de-badge your vehicle!
