    General thoughts here on Smeg.

We have a Smeg oven, its flawless & is now 10 years old, totally recommend them. My wife also bought their kettle and toaster, both are wayyyyy below the quality of the price point (the kettle has been replaced twice under warranty already).

    Cant comment on the mixers.

    • Our $200+ SMEG kettle has started leaking in year 3 of ownership.
Suffice to say I'm uninmpressed, even more so than paying freaking $200 for a kettle in the first place!

      • Yup, the first one leaked & the second one the paint bubbled on, both were replaced. My wife made me buy it (because she wanted a pink kettle & toaster) but they are both significantly lower quality that the Breville models they replaced (in the loft, ready to be re-deployed when the time is right).

        • My wife made me buy it

I was talking to a salesdroid once in a kitchen supplies place. His take on mixers was "do your research, check out all the different models, then buy a Kitchenaid. They don't come back, the Smegs do."

    • Espresso machines are also not worth buying.

  • Found it for $493 at Winnings, so really only $100 less than that ($80 if you include the $20 coupon code).

Don't forget, the main cost in these things are the attachments. They want almost $300 for the pasta attachments!!

Wanted to buy a KitchenAid and saw these by Smeg. My brother works for an appliance company so I asked him and he said never buy Smeg small appliances, out of all the brands they stock, Smeg comes back the most.

Pretty sure those small appliances are repackaged products with a new exterior and a smeg logo. That is why they suck. But then again, even newer kitchenaid mixers dont stand up to the old ones.

      • ssshhhh don't tell them

In Choice's review of stand mixers, this one is near the bottom - three ranks below the $100 Kogan (not that I'd buy the Kogan either!)

    • 800w direct drive motor.
My Kmart mixer has more power than that.
No wonder reviews are poor, it's a bit of a weakling

      • Are you sure about that?
        800W is very good.
The equivalent KitchenAid is 300W at best

        • Sorry I meant 800w not direct drive.

The ktichen aid is direct drive and so power is not comparable

This kmart one I have is the diecast one and is 1000w
A kenwood chef XL is 1200W

      • Can you share a link? 800w is pretty damn powerful. Find it hard to believe Kmart can match that.

  • Have had problems with both my smeg kettle & toaster.. While the cheap mixer I bought for $39 15 years ago is still going strong..

Eh, take that with a grain of salt. I've got this exact unit and love it. People are way more likely to review something if their experience has been negative. Most people just get on with their lives if they enjoy the product.

People are way more likely to review something if their experience has been negative. Most people just get on with their lives if they enjoy the product.

This is pretty much why almost all online reviews are worthless. In-between the negative participation bias and undeclared paid reviewers it is near impossible to get any impartial information.

  • OOS

  • I still can't believe I was lucky enough to snag one of the Kitchenaid KPM5 mixers from Kogan a couple of years back. They're the best Brand & model, imho.

  • with smeg you are paying 200% markup for just the brand name. The price is what you pay and value is what you get.

  • Kitchen Aid rules this roost I'm afraid.
