751

First post, no bully

Just spotted this deal for an ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3080 V2 10GB for $1049 that expires at midnight tonight (11:59PM 25/09/2022). Looks like it's the same deal from just over a month ago

Seems like a pretty good deal for an Asus Card. Still not the 12GB though

Very tempted to buy it myself to replace my 1080. Pray for me boys

Here is an unpopular opinion: PC gaming makes no sense!

For one, PC games are often poorly optimised. Remember when everyone was shocked that even the 3090 didn’t run Cyberpunk too well at max settings?

Secondly, the hardware for a decent gaming rig is getting ridiculously expensive. More than $1000 for a high-end GPU is the new normal.

And lastly: what really matters is the fun of gaming. I just don’t see how somewhat improved graphics from additional $1000s spent on high-end gaming hardware makes any sense. It’s not like this translates into an equally great uplift in how you enjoy your games.

It’s consoles all the way for me.

    • +4

I agree, but meh, people enjoy what they enjoy 🤷🏻‍♂️

Buying games is usually cheaper on PC. And GPUs have other uses too - from training ML models to ripping video editing. Thankfully crypto mining has been struck off that list of things that GPUs can be used for, there are still other reasons apart from just gaming to want to have a powerful GPU.

And again - Xbox Series X is about equivalent to an RTX 2080 - which can be picked up on the 2nd hand market for $500~$600 i.e. less than that console. The PS5 is weaker still. So I don't think the consoles represent all that much value at the current time.

I once did a comparison of a $500 used PC vs an Xbox Series S and the equation came out heavily in the XBSS's favour. But now you could do a PS5 at the new RRP of $800 compared to an $800 PC and I'd be interested in seeing the results of that comparison.

      • +2

Bruh you can't game on a graphics card alone you need other components . How are you building a PC with 2080 for $800 lol.

Not disagreeing that the gap is shortening but the consoles been out for 2 years and still represent great value to get into the gaming ecosystem. That being said PC is useful for other things too :)

        • $350 for an rx 660 xt
          That leaves $450 for
          Mobo
          CPU
          RAM
          SSD
          PSU
          Case
          It could be done imo.

          • @Gamer Dad Reviews: Very hard to find a new 6600xt for $350. I'll await your price list on those other components. Plus you also have to build it.

    • The majority of PC gamers play those spammy multiplayer shooters/RPGs anyway. You can get away with a $500 mid-tier card which will last you for years, you don't need to pay $1000.

      • So freaking true. 6700xt can last till 2088.

      • Yeah there's like literally a handful of games each year that actually push gaming hardware to its limits to get 60fps. Cyber punk, Flight Sim etc etc. Gamers seem to have forgotten that a mid range card like 3070 or 6700xt will last several years no probs.

    • +6

there is no point to compare apple to orange.
the games ppl want to play simply doesnt exist on the opposite platform. beside pc can do more than just gaming.

if you really want to argue a game that exisit on both platform, if i like it, and care about it that much, i will spend that much on pc to get the best exprience i can even tho it might not be the efficient performance. it all comes down to individual. nothing wrong goes grocery shopping in a lambo if thats what ppl can/want.

but i do get your point, and i do think most ppl should feel satisfied by an modern console.

    • For one, PC games are often poorly optimised.

Yes, because of the thousand different hardware combination possibilities that exists and the rate at which new hardware keeps hitting the market there is simply no point for it and it;s a huge waste of time for the developer.

Secondly, the hardware for a decent gaming rig is getting ridiculously expensive.

The thing is pc gaming has no limits… If you just want to play games depending on the type of game consoles might be a better option, but people do alot more other things that gaming on pcs.

And lastly: what really matters is the fun of gaming. I just don’t see how somewhat improved graphics from additional …

Well it is what it is… The amount of time some people spend on performance tuning for few fps gains is simply questionable and the behaviour is encouraged by lot of other followers of the same topic.

It’s consoles all the way for me.

I use both, pc for mostly rts games and console for everything else.

More than $1000 for a high-end GPU is the new norm

Current GPU prices aren't any sort of norm, they are still around double what they should be, and have been 3x or more for three years due to a once-in-a-lifetime COVID-shortage-coinciding-with-mining-boom.

But they are slowly returning to normal.

And when normal, a PC is cheaper than an equivalent console for all except the first year or two of the consoles life.

That's excluding the real saving, which is the games. A little patience and most of your games are 50-100% off on PC.

Less fiddling and exclusive games are legit reasons to spend the extra to buy a console. And right now is a rare exception to the rule (that appears to be ending soonish) where value for money actually favours consoles, depending on what games you buy and how many.

But generally, PC crushes consoles for long term bang-for-buck.

    • That's because the max settings for Cyberpunk have ray tracing cranked up. Turn that off and 3090 has no problem. It's not due to the optimisation it's just that raytracing is computationally expensive.

    • i agree, even though its kinda redundant. have always had gaming pc's, but the last decade, specifically the ps4 generation i think had multiple console studios reach levels with games being full on cinema experiences that pc developers were just not matching. the scale of money was in a different league. consoles have led the market for a while now, which is doubly bad for the pc's in general because, then you're not getting devs leading graphically or with gameplay, and when the console games do come over, they are a mixed bag optimisation-wise because the console focused devs are out of their lane.

theres obvs still games where a PC just can't be beat as everyone knows, specifically fps games, but to be honest thats one of the most played out genre's. until i can relive something new thats on par with something as groundbreaking as quake or the like, its all very derivative/repetitive. would def rather just sacrifice some of the "pro gamer" move possibilities, and just actually enjoy things, on an 80".

whats happened with the whole gpu idiocy with crypto has really only made the discrepancy clear. a whole system cheaper than any one of these overpriced gpu's.. no brainer.

You don't really need higher than a 3060 for anything but luxury monitor sizes etc, and you don't even need nvidia for anything but special cases like also doing some machine learning (which I do).

Realistically you can spend $200-$500 on a GPU and be covered for everything. The most popular card is still the 1060 according to Steam stats, developers can't really target 3080s etc as the necessary requirements for 99% of games.

    • Holding out on GPU prices is a lot easier with a PS5 or an XBSX. I have a 4 year old GPU, it runs well, but the pick up and play factor of my console is so much better than the PC experience right now. When mid level GPU's are noticeably better than the consoles or GPU prices have dropped to reasonable prices, then I'd say moving back over to PC gaming is worth it.

3080 10gb at this price isn't really a deal. If it was 12gb then maybe. I do not think we will see massive price drops like everyone wants though. The next 3 months, the lowest a 3080 10gb and 12gb will likely go is $950. I predict Nvidia are going to trickle feed 40 series till next year to fake a shortage so as to clear they 30 series stock and keep prices high.

  • +8

learned my lesson, will not support nvidia, wait to see amd's offer.
also learned i dont need any ray tracing, AI, stuff, just good old raw fps and vram.

My 2060 Super still going strong.. can't quite find a reason to upgrade with these absolute circus prices.

    • +1

same here. Was hoping for more energy efficient revision of 30 series but nope :-\

    • We are the lucky ones who got a 2060 Super before the insanity. I got that $480 one from a deal here in 2019.

I can see why people with even older cards are tempted to give up HODLing before prices fully return to normal, but there's just no need to for us.

  • you guys think <=4080 cards will be hardware based LHRs?

    • +2

isnt gpu mining a history topic now?

      • at the moment, yes.

      • Till the next shitcoin comes along

Non-lhr trolling comments per usual - mad he spent 3x msrp on a card

    • Almost the same amount of times his been in the penalty box

    I'm holding for a 3080 12g under 1k

  • +9

Reality is if you genuinely care about your ability to buy sensibly priced high-end GPUs in the long term, you shouldn't be giving a cent to NVIDIA right now.

    • +2

I know right, all those ding dongs still falling for their bs. AMD or prepare to pay more and more every new release.

    • +3

This is what i've been saying they will keep jacking prices as long as people keep justifying the absurd prices if we stop paying ridiculous amounts for gpus then they either sell less or lower prices simple

      • +4

I think the 40 series prices are artificially inflated. This is so that people will keep buying the 30 series at current prices and they do not have to drop them too much.

        • -2

the silicone they are using in this series is 4x more than what was used in the 3000 series

          • @PensionerXXL: "is 4x more" what?

4x more expensive, 4x more silicon material, as in a larger chip, or 4x more something else?

            • @FabMan: the silicoon wafers themself

              • @PensionerXXL: Not the silicon wafers, I know that much. Do you mean the chips on the GPU's or the amount of transistors? Do you have a link for where you got this information from? Thanks.

                • +1

@FabMan: hey man sorry for the delay, i got it from youtube not sure what podcast as i leave youtube running instead of a radio it was probably on moores law is dead or adoredtv. probably the second one as he quite often pulls up the website that calculates the silicon costs and breaks down things like 8nm vs 4nm from a wafer and how many dies

Just will not pay overpriced 2 year old tech at these price

  • 10gb vs 12gb going to be that much difference?

    • Yeah if u wanna keep the card for future use too

320 vs 384 bit memory bus - that's the biggest improvement
also 12gb version has a few more cores

After the stunt Nvidia pulled I'm team AMD now.

  • May I ask you guys can I get the first batch of 4090 graphics cards on Amazon?

    • +3

If you ask that then u aren't associated by any means lol

    • Why would you buy from Amazon if you work for Scorptec? Just ask your boss to reserve you one.

      • I don't work for them I just want to know will Amazon release them at the same time? my colleagues gave me a lot of gift cards

  • $599 by the end of this year

    • i dont think retailers would bother buying them anymore after they sell out
