Get it Pricebeat at OW - would come with free shipping as well

    • Can you call them? Can't go through

    • Nvm guess their customers services off on weekends. Might need to go to store

    • You won’t get it matched, eb site says priced to clear.

      OW dont match clearance.

      Some might get lucky though

      • It says sale 25% off rather than clearance. I was able to price beat at OW. Got down from $142.

      • Worked for me

      • You will they're not gonna scroll down enough to see clearance

  • I'm getting $16.95 shipping

    • was 5.95 for me but I had it pricebeat at officeworks

  • How does this compare to JBL Charge 4 in terms of sound and bass?

    • +3

I can't speak for the Charge 4, but I returned my Megaboom 3 for a Charge 5 and found it so much better.

      • Thanks, I guess I’ll keep my 4 yrs old Charge 4 until a good deal comes around for the Charge 5

        • +2

I have a charge 5 and far prefer it to the UE. Bass is significantly superior.

  • Doubt there is anything better in this price range.

    • +2

I agree - the Megaboom is loud and great I’m loving it

      • -2

imo i believe the UE boom 3 is pretty great

    • charge 5 is apparently much better and if you have TGG commercial cheaper

      • JBL charge 5 is not better than this

        • i dont have any but this video says otherwise - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rxvn5Fxm-Lw&ab_channel=Wanna…

          • @botchie: rtings has them pretty close but gives it to the megaboom https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/jbl-charge-5-vs…

The most notable difference being the sound stage probably in part due to the fact the charge 5 down mixes stereo to mono while the megabnoom plays in stereo.

USB C and being able to charge other devices is cool though.

            • @noise36: yeah I saw that as well but if you listen to the sound there is only one clear winner IMO

              • @botchie: No doubt some people will prefer the sound of one device over the other , that is not surprising.

rtings exploded in popularity because it uses impartial technical analysis to measure and rate things.

The days of consumers having to rely on reviewers giving their anecdotal opinion of what sounds best are thankfully over.

Given the largest difference is the "soundstage" the charge 5 seems to have very directional audio and will sound better sitting in front of you while the megaboom has 360 audio design and will sound better in the middle of a room at a BBQ or party etc.

Given how closely they rate it looks like you cant go wrong with either at this price point.

        • I've had both and found the Charge 5 heaps better. The Megaboom 3 was really underwhelming and not nearly as clean sounding (or loud)

Damn - EB having something at a bargain price? What’s the occasion?

  • Do these have usb c?

    • +2

      Micro USB /shudders

  • +6

I honestly prefer the Boom - found the Megaboom way too bulky - even though sound is insane…

We need a USB C model at some point…

  • That's a good price. However it's a couple of things i didn't expect after I bought this speaker a few months back. Compared to my UE Boom 2 the sound wasn't any louder. But I found Mega Boom 3 got better bass than UE Boom 2. I was disappointed when I realised while my UE boom 2 had speaker phone, UE Megaboom didn't have it. I just dont know why Logitech didn't include speaker phone on the UE Megaboom 3

Okay guys this deal is more popular than I thought so here are some of my opinions.

Personally I think the EFM Havana when it was $40~$42 was better value. But for 3x~4x the price the Megaboom 3 does have slightly larger dimensions, it's particularly chonkier about 1.5cm larger in diameter and from the teardown it looks like the Megaboom also has larger speakers.
Another feature the Boom speakers seem to have is the ability to turn the speaker on using Bluetooth, so instead of turning on the speaker with the button you only have to reach for your phone and it's one less extra step I guess.
The downside to this feature is apparently the speaker drains it's battery faster while it's turned off. I think some feedback and another comment here on ozbargain mentioned it needs to be charged every 2 weeks even though the speaker isn't being used.
To give some perspective, I do have another bluetooth speaker which also drains when it's off and it drains even faster. I need to put it on the charger every 7 days otherwise when I go to use it, it won't turn on and the 5000mAh battery is completely dead. So the battery drain is even worse than the Boom speaker. And you might think it has the "bluetooth on" feature? No it doesn't I tried, it just drains the battery real fast when it's switched off.

So is the Megaboom 3 worth $149 + $6 shipping? That's for you to decide.

Edit here is the comment about needing to charge often https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12490030/redir

    • Forgot to mention. Megaboom 3 with 20 hours has double the battery life compared to the 10 hours of the EFM Havana.

For those upset about microUSB , you can get a wireless charging dock

    • wireless charging?

      • Ultimate Ears Power Up Wireless Charging Dock, think it technically charges with metal contact points so "wireless" in that you just put it down pick it up not plugging anything in.

        • nice. Seems to be a huge difference in prices for it. I guess some arent original.. Any recommendations where to buy?

Got one of these over 3 years ago from the jb hifi deal.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/452018
Still going strong. Amazing how there isn’t a new model out yet

    • Hey I am just curious was that JB code in that deal a 30% off anything code?

      • I could be wrong as it was a long time ago but I think it’s was a code specific to the ue megaboom

        • Ok sure no problem. I was just going to say they don't seem to give out codes like that anymore.

    • Yeh same with me got two that time… Best deal I ever posted hehe

    • Same ~ bought MB3 on this JB Hi-Fi deal. Been using it every week and it is still going strong after 3 years.

When I compare it to Bose portable speakers, I find Bose has better sound and clearer vocals.

  • Price matched at officeworks in person for 142.96. Thanks OP!

If I had any advice it would be to give the speaker a full charge before trying to switch it on.
You don't want the speaker circuit trying to draw a high amount of power from a low charged battery as it switches on and plays it's loud "on" sound effect.

      • Why not?

        • If the battery is close to 0% charge it means it is likely on the lower limit of it's healthy operating voltage. It's the same with most rechargeable batteries, you don't want to leave them in devices to discharge all the way to near empty while the device is still asking for power it will reduce the lifespan of the batteries.
Similarly playing a bluetooth speaker without a limiter in the circuit at max volume will have the same affect where it will try to draw higher power than the battery is outputting in it's normal range. This will have the same affect of stressing the battery reducing it's lifespan/number of recharge cycles.

Even Panasonic who make Eneloops will recommend charging their batteries at 60~80% charge remaining to get the maximum number of cycles.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: The speaker came at 20% charge for the record (probably a bit more, as the app reports to the nearest 10%).

I'd like to think the engineers who designed this would have considered that.

Also: afaik, that 60-80% number is for maximising charge cycles, and even then probably isn't a huge issue if the battery is modern and well cooled. Google suggsts that ~40% is the ideal charge for storing batteries long term.

(disclaimer: i have no idea what I'm talking about)

            • @deals4eels: Alright good to know.

Yeah engineers will do what they can, but there is no fighting battery charge level when it's sitting in a box in the warehouse. Normally the smaller the battery the less the shelf life so with things like TWS earbuds you can notice they don't hold charge long if you stop using them.
Also I have noticed some devices will discharge very slowly if they are "factory sealed", as in once you turn them on once they activate something and start discharging at a faster rate.
Bluetooth speakers are a bit better off than TWS earbuds, but still if any of this stock was made in 2018 when the Megaboom 3 was released then charge level will be on the low side, as you experienced I think 20% means not much longer on the shelf before 0%. EB must have "sell by dates" from the manufacturer and probably have tonnes of inventory so they decided to clear some stock I think because who goes to a game shop to buy a bluetooth speaker lol.

Word of warning. The main magic button only lasts a couple of months and then gets jammed. Then it starts going into stuck loop and you can't play/pause on the boom anymore

I remember getting one of these as part of the 2 slabs of Heineken deal (by redemption for $99 years ago) was a great deal.

  • pitty noegaboom on ebay. postage costs is annoying

    • You need eBay plus subscription to get the same price as the deal from eBay store.

  • Bought one of these a couple of years ago for the insane price of $124 from JB. The main advantage is it's such a robust bit of kit; waterproof (ish), solid build, something to take to the beach and not worry about.

Having said that, sound wise, it's only ok. I've not been that impressed and would be disappointed if I paid full price.
