Replacing Car - When to Put Old One up for Sale and Where

Hi

I’m getting a new car early Nov and will be looking to sell the existing car ideally very soon after. Should I put an ad up before I get the new car ie a week or two before. I’m assuming it could easily take that long to sell. I’m looking for about $50k.

Based on ozb advice and the selling price I’ll look to place on fb and gumtree. Payment either via cleared bank transfer or face to face transfer at bank. Anything else I’m missing?

Thanks in advance 😀

  • Depends on how quick someone wants to buy, generally at higher priced cars people are happy to look around and buy the right car, you could say 'ready for sale on X date', I'd suggest putting it up 1-2 months before hand. Potentially getting by with pub transport/ubers or buying a cheap camry to tie you over and then selling that once the car lands, potentially at a small loss if rushing to sell camry.

$50K car depends if it is a high demand 4WD or a luxury car that will take a lot longer to sell

    • Keeping in mind Facebook and Gumtree is mainly forcheap bargain priced cars.
Not really the correct place to advertise a $50K beauty.
Best place would be Carsales.com.au but by all means advertise of the free sites as well.
Just expect lots of time wasters and low ballers

Can't tell if you are joking, but, if I m looking for a $50K used car, I'm sure as hell not looking on Gumtree or Facebook.

Use Carsales and pay for an ad.

Ignore anyone on any platform who is out of state for work/in hospital/on an oil rig or any BS like that. Just don't even respond.

    • Along with anyone who uses the phrase 'internet messaging facility' or explains what a bank transfer is

    • Original plan was to put on carsales until I read posts on ozb lol.

      • I had time-wasters when I used gumtree to sell a car. Sold pretty quick on carsales.

I had no callers on Carsales and all my inquiries came from Fartbook and Scamtree.

Carsales is a rip-off and I swear that 95% of the time, any inquiry you get is only from a Carsales bot pretending to be a buyer.

@pegaxs: I sold my car within 4 days of listing and it wasn't even cheap in the market per se.

If your car is shit don't blame it on Carsales, it doesn't perform miracles. On the flipside if the car is shit do put it on Facebook/Gumtree, those maggots love a bargain even if it stinks like and is shit.

@pegaxs: Have sold several cars on carsales quickly from Subarus to Porsches, compared to scumtree and fb lunatics. YMMV.

@pegaxs: Think you'll find most people have a generally positive and successful experience on Carsales. Of course like any platform there will be the pitfalls to watch out for.

The only consistent one I found on Carsales was the dealerships that call you to say you accidentally listed your car for $15k more than what's it's "really" worth, and they'd be happy to buy the car for the "real" price.

  • +8

Don't list it until you get your new car. Things happen.

  • I only look at cars on gumtree that are over $50k, realistically because they are worth that.

Just trade it in. Saves dealing with a moron if they try to get the money back off you due to change of mind citing fault. Get a quote from the dealer at least

    • +2

      This is ozbargain, not ozgivesomeoneelseabargain.

    • Dealer price was approx 10k less than market price.

  • OP didn't say Nov 22 or Nov 23

  • What is the car? If late model and sought after, dealer will probably give you good money for it.

    • It’s a Volvo suv about 4 years old. My understanding is you generally get a better price selling private. If a dealer is interested I guess they can still contact you when selling private.

      • +2

Generally you can, though with the state of things at the moment, people have been getting great offers from dealers. More money is good, but selling privately and dealing with morons sucks. If I could get pretty close from a dealer/auction etc, I'd just do that.

4 year old Volvo? You'll be struggling to sell it off for 50k, maybe take the dealer advice of that 10k cheaper as it is what the hassle worth.

        • +2

OP didn't say what model Volvo it was, so I'm wondering how you know what the value of it is. 50K might be a bargain, or way too much.
Also, you reckon losing $10,000 is "worth the hassle"? #oznotbargaining

Stick it on carsales. Depending on the model could go sell quickly - for the $100 or so it costs, definitely worth a shot.
Dealer offered me 17K tradein on an old Cayenne, I put it on carsales and sold it 10 days later for $29K - had two offers made on the same day from different people.

If you don’t need the cash straight up, wait until you get a confirmed delivery date a week out then list.

Ultimately it’s probably better to trade it in. IMO it’s only worth selling privately if it is a car that the dealers won’t sell themselves. Ie too old/cheap for their yard.

  • +1

There are a new factors at play.

Tradein - the dealer will only do if they can make easy money on your old car. They arent going to do you any favors.

Selling privately - for a $50k car you will need to be fairly sharp and prepared. Ie on the look out for scams or even outright theft. Plus driving a hard bargain. If that isnt you then see tradein. Used cars are in short supply but with the economy slowing with higher interest rates and petrol prices perhaps used car sales might too. However you only have to sell it once.

  • I'll throw a catch amongst the pigeons - eBay.

Years ago (about 15 years I'd say), my Dad was selling my Mum's VS Commodore and it was it well kept, 5 years old, red and it was a supercharged model. He listed it on most places as well as eBay! The enquiry came through on eBay and did the transaction on the site. It was about $20k (cannot be 100% sure) I think for the car at the time.

But was surprised it sold through an eBay listing enquiry!

I'll throw a catch amongst the pigeons

Most people would throw a cat amongst the pigeons. But maybe I'm out of touch…

      • My bad, auto correct.

  • My rego expires in 3 weeks. Any benefit in getting rego if I don’t drive it after that? Just thinking it may not benefit a buyer from out of state?

    • +1

You'll be able to sell it easier if it comes with rego.

    • +1

Some states let you register for three or six months.

      • +1

Don’t try and skimp on rego if you are going to sell.

  • Recently sold a car using the carsales instant offer. It is a hassle free option. I was skeptical at first but the price was only maybe 2~3K under market. It was a painless process and the money was received on the day of delivery to the nominated dealership address.

YMMV, worth a shot just to get an instant appraisal.
