X230T is now out, hence the clearance prices :)

    • Strangely the X230T isn't available on the AU site, which is a bit strange.
Additionally, I read a review comparing the two tablets, and there were a couple of changes to the X230T, mainly with the keyboard, that make it a close race between the two.

ThinkPad purists would hate the new 6 row island-style keyboard on the new ThinkPads, but I guess with tablets it's a lesser concern?

X220T uses IPS screen and I am not sure whether it's still the case with X230T. For the regular X220, IPS is optional and I cannot see the same option available to the regular X230 — which is a bummer.

        • I've used both a T420 and E320 extensively and I prefer the feel of the new island-style boards.

The regular X230 actually does have the IPS option (+$55), just that it's listed as "12.5" Premium HD" and doesn't explicitly mention IPS (unlike the X220 display options description). This can be verified by looking at the X230 Datasheet

They need to keep going with the price cuts

  • I'm still stuck on my X201T. A trackpoint/touchscreen/keyboard combo makes navigating even Windows 7 (with the origami touch-optimization pack) nice and quick. It works well with Windows 8 too, and the Wacom stylus makes OneNote extra useful.

    • They are great machines, although getting a bit long in the tooth considering the design hasnt changed much in 3-5 years.

      • +3

They don't need to change their design though.

        • They really do, its not comparable to modern styled machines.

Take ultrabooks for example, the x1, even the t420 much thinner and nicer styling.

In saying that i love my x200s, which i am using to type this :)

Great price for the X220T! Just wish they'll reduce the price more for the regular X220 with IPS screen…

Just be aware that the x220s need a 90watt charger because you'll experience throttling. Without it with the normal 65watt charger with no battery the processor speeds go down. Just bought a 90 w on ebay $16 delivered.

Also the x220 tablets haven't addressed the driver issues with the wacom digitiser. It affects pen pressure sensitivity on programs like Photoshop and Sketchbook Pro. May not be an issue with non creative types but I just thought I'd give you guys the heads up. Also it affects calibration at the edge of the screen which is really annoying.

Anyhoo, I'm typing on the x220 tablet now and just got 1 stick of 8gb ram for $60. I called Lenovo support because there is conflicting documentation about maximum upgradable memory but I can confirm you can upgrade the i7 version to 16gb. The Lenovo Solution Centre that has all the diagnostic info is correct. The tech support advised me his documentation stated it was only upgradeable to 8gb.

Nice machine, apart from the issues I mentioned.

    • Why wouldn't you leave the battery in when charging with the normal 65watt charger, ie no CPU throttling?

      • +2

If it doesn't throttle if you have the battery in whilst you're charging but it does if you're not, that means it's draining the battery as you use it when it's charging, which ultimately leads to unnecessary battery wear.

If you use the laptop whilst plugged in a majority of the time you should probably take the battery out.

Sturmeh, summed it up. I just want to maintain the battery by using it every other day but if I'm doing work at one spot I'm not using the battery.

But in getting the 90w charger, it now has issues with an erratic trackpad. Oh well, back to throttling :(

      • If it doesn't throttle if you have the battery in whilst you're charging but it does if you're not, that means it's draining the battery as you use it when it's charging, which ultimately leads to unnecessary battery wear.

That's making the assumption that it also throttles when using battery power only.

When you have a fully charged battery in and 65watt charger connected does the battery level indicator in Windows start dipping below 100% under normal/heavy use?

I wonder how much difference it would make in the end to the battery lifespan / capacity?

In my case I have a Dell Latitude E4300 connected to a docking station and I always leave the battery in. The laptop rarely leaves the docking station. Should I be removing the battery?

It says here about 3/4 of the way down the page:
        http://batteries4less.com/contents/Battery_Guide/?module=sta…

Q: Should I remove the battery when I'm using the AC adapter?
A: No. A lithium-ion battery is not affected by being plugged into a laptop while the laptop is on AC power. Once the battery is charged, the computer will stop charging it.

      • Okay, I reread through all that again and realised there was a misunderstanding on my part.

"dri" only mentioned throttling occurred when using the 65watt charger without the battery. "dri" didn't mention throttling also occurred when using the battery exclusively, but from what I understand this is in fact the case.

If somebody could still help with my question regarding my laptop and battery, it would be greatly appreciated.

        Thanks!

She would want to chat with you if you stay on a page for more than a minute or two…

        • Found her, thanks Scotty.

She sure works hard for her money…

    • Should consider adding her to the list?
