Did you receive an email from paypal like this:
"You've submitted an order in the amount of $249.01 AUD to Dell Australia"
If you have only authorized $249.01, there is no way they can charge you $3000.

      • Nah, he's just high. I mean, snoopydoop is HIGH.

      • No, so all email correspondence claims the price of ~3k

However, at no point during checkout did it say anything other than the cheaper price, both at checkout and the order confirmed screen, which I still have up.

So the screenshots are the only evidence I have, everything on their side and paypal's side sent via email claims full price.

Not sure what I should do here.

        • likely they had updated the price already and your browser was serving you a cached version.

          • @thedean: I was on "shipping" page, and it had already reset over on the product page. It then refreshed to the confirm order page, where it asked to confirm all the details (completely new page), I then checked details and confirmed order.

Now, even the completed order page after hitting checkout says the reduced price, but all email correspondence says the higher price. Very odd that their successful order page says the reduced price too. It was only when I checked my bank account that I was informed of the higher price.

    • I just got charged 3k instead of the other price, my email says 3k too

Why you didn't check the final price before click complete order

      • The final price said 249. I triple checked, and have screenshots.

There was no point during the entire checkout process that it mentioned the higher price, including the successful order page.

The only thing I don't have a screenshot of is the PayPal authorisation page for the 249.

  • Did anyone print a PDF of the deal off by any chance before Dell took it down? Google Cached version is full price and there is no recent capture on archive.org. Tempted to buy it at full price and then do a price protection claim with GO Mastercard… 😂 Doubt they would honour it though.

  • +3

Come on Dell, if Lenovo could, you can do much better.

    Ordered 1, fingers crossed.

  • Be amazing if they honour it, they'll have many happy customers that's for sure and if they do, be interesting to see how many flood the seconds market

  • +1

Damn… miss out. How did OP find out about the deal is the real question..

  • Post your ORDER RECIEVED email time and ORDER CONFIRMED email time here:

Lets see if any have actually received the confirmed email….

    • +1

I've got the 'Your Dell Order Has Been Received ' email from them

    • I got order received email from Dell and payment from paypal

      • +2

The PayPal payment is just a pre-auth. Standard stuff, check your bank and you will see it's likely just a 0 dollar charge pending against your account. Payment itself happens when they process the order (which they almost certainly will not) not when they receive it.

  • Takes me to a page to select the warranty and the price reverts to 2499. Damn!

  • +1

Not a chance Dell will honour this.

    • +4

Someones says that on every honoured deal.

      • +2

        Yes like the Lenovo deal

  • +1

Damn why do I always miss the best deals for stuff I actually could use.

  • +12

Now remember if this is a price error and they cancel there's nothing the ACCC or Fair Trade can do it about it. Completely legal to cancel due to price errors.

    • +5

Don’t let logic stop me from getting my monitor

    • +2

Indeed. Specifically mentions pricing errors in their terms of sale.

  • I have to laugh at the "hope Dell honour it" comments. The deal has over 15,000 clicks.

  • +37

In the likely event that we get refunded and don't receive the monitors…
Just putting this here before people start complaining that they need to honor the price
    ACC price display rules
the important line of text here being:
the business has to fix the display or sell you the item for the lowest price.

In this case….they have fixed the "display". so based on ACCC rules, they have valid grounds to not honor the pricing error.

HOWEVER….some businesses in the past have honored pricing errors, usually comes down to them deciding if it's worth taking the hit or not.

So….lets just see if they are willing to take the hit, for the people that decided to buy 50…..unfortunately i don't think they will be willing to take the hit.

I'm keeping a close eye on my emails today, but it's not going to surprise me if they decline the orders.

Regardless, good job OP, you truly gave my friday a kickstart.

    • +18

I still don't get the people downvoting this….i'm not doing anything wrong, i'm just being realistic, and giving you info from the ACCC

I definitely hope we get the monitors, but if you dont, don't be surprised.

      • +3

In some cases, people hate being realistic. This is one of them.

    • +3

Agreed, no need to downvote the comment as it's providing actual useful information.

The same ruling applies to pricing errors in a physical store. If a displayed price is lower than the expected correct price the store cannot choose to charge you the higher price. They have to decide to either let you have it at the lower displayed price or they can 'remove it from sale', which basically means they won't let you have it at all. A lot of businesses will often let you have the first one at the lower price, then promptly change the displayed price and charge the higher one from there on, but I have had some places say they won't sell it to me due to a pricing error.

First rule of Ozbargain Premium is don't talk about Ozbargain Premium.

Managed to get an order in at 09:36 Brisbane time, not expecting it to be honoured but just wanted to be apart of dissapointment

  • +3

Why should dell spend millions on advertising and PR when they could take a loss on a few monitors and gain some good grace with the OzBargain community?

Seems like a no brainer to me

    • +1

say 10% of the clicks through to the website bought a monitor. There have been 17,000 clicks so far, but the deal died a while back, so lets say 12,000. 10% of those people bought only one monitor, so there were 1,200 purchases processed.

RRP is $2,500, so Dell are discounting each monitor here by $2,250

1200 x 2250 = $2,700,000 worth of good grace with the Ozbargain community.

  • +3

I suspect dell would be foolish just to cancel all of these straight away and lose potential customers.
A smart sales manager would apologise and offer a coupon or discounted price to buy the monitor in an effort to convert some cancellations into real orders rather than piss a whole bunch of people off.

I suspect that's probably the conversation that's going on right now. Given Dell doesn't charge until shipping, cancelling these orders has little financial cost to them.

    • +27

      Here's how the conversation goes

"Should we lose millions in sales loss, labour to pack, shipping costs and future warranty return costs for a bunch of tight arses who have spent the past 20 years telling their families that Dell computers are overpriced and it's cheaper to build your own PC through parts at MSY, and who will never visit our site again unless we make another pricing error?"

      "No, no we shouldn't"

      • +1

You're missing the point entirely my friend.
I'm not saying they would honor the price, I'm saying they would be assessing the opportunity cost of sending a coupon and making some profit, or offering some discount exclusively and still making profit.

At no point did I suggest they would honor the price.

        • +2

          Heres your $5 coupon

          • +1

@superdoedoe: My account is actually set up or order laptops / monitors for my work staff, which I forgot about.
Any time there has been delays on orders or changes, Dell has been very generous and offered between $50 - $100 vouchers.

Not sure if normal consumers get that though

    • +1

They've got hundreds (thousands?) of us watching our emails like Hawks, it'd be a waste to just cancel.
Something like a $1k off voucher would still offer 'a deal' to those who genuinely want it while weeding out all the lowballers (myself included) who would never buy at a price that's profitable for them

      • a $1k voucher lol

        • Specifically for this monitor, whatever gets it down to the regular sale price of 1500

  • +1

My order of 2 now shows an order history of 1 unit but at the $499 price. No idea what's going on there

    • I have the same

    • Mine has that as well, maybe they'll offer us 1 for $499 😅

      • +4

I'd still take it for $499 tbh.

Go to "download pricing and payment details" and you will see the proper order on that file.

      • Have it now, and shows correct order details - thanks!

    • but our email confirmation says 2
