I bought this a couple of months ago for this price at a dse closing down sale and thought it was a good price, I stumbled across this and thought I'd share. My 2cents about the boxee box.

Pros are: Netflix, if you have an nba league pass you can view that on the boxee(with a little tweaking) free Hulu and bbc iview.

Cons: disappoint there is no premium Hulu support for the boxee

All in all have been very happy with the boxee Box.

  • this box is a great media player … i owned one

only drawback for me was it is very slow when using the keyboard supplied. I even tried a logitech dinovo Bluetooth keyboard ( YES, it works natively after you plug in the BT adaptor) and still the typing and mouse pad was lagging.

So if your a person who likes speed, you probably wont like this.

I also noticed it crashes alot too

    • Latest update seems to have improved that for me.

    $..99 no deal

  • Link is for $249?

  • Updated link… I saw this in store by the way and when I posted bargain I googled the link for jbhifi online and notice they had it on sale online aswell hence I added the link.. Hope thats all fixed.

    • Link is still $249

  • How is it better than the $100 WDTV or Apple TV?

    • Boxee is great. As indicated by kevron, it runs a form of XBMC, which is really great system. Support for a very large number of file types.

I know people who have brought the Apple TV, gotten very frustrated with it's shortcomings and then brought a Boxee afterwards.

  • I use the boxee software on a laptop and am quite happy with it.
I would like the stand alone media player as the laptop is quite bulky.
However with this being the same price as the xbox360, would that be the better option as a media player ?

We've been using a ps3 and a xbox360 to play our content and neither supports as many formats as we'd like, even with using transcoding software on our PCs with the PS3. We tried out a Boxee this weekend and are sold on it. The software it runs is actually a fork of xmbc, which is a really impressive media centre software package, does neat stuff like scan your sources and scrape TV show artwork/movie posters from the net for whatever content you have. It really has a lot of features for people who care enough to play with them, like it supports VPNs, so you can use things like Hulu in australia if you have a VPN.

    • Does the Boxee fork support Live TV?

I'm using XBMC myself on my Proliant, and as you say it's very impressive; but I'm finding lack of Live TV & support for DVB-T cards to be a bit of a pain!

        No it doesn't

        • Cheers, thanks for that.

        • Yeah good call, we'll still be using the PS3's playTV for live TV.

    • A slight correction to the above - Boxee does NOT currently support Hulu - there is no app for Hulu and they have blocked the boxee browser from being able to use the service. Netflix, Spotify and most web video content work though.

  • xbox360 doesnt always play all my local media, doesnt play smb of my nas. yes vpns are handy but i haven't been able to get hulu plus on boxee.

  • Better to buy a mini pc IMO

  • I have a horrid Astone media player. God damn is it slow and clunky, but I love the hell out of it.

      AP-300 or 360? :p

I have two AP-300's & love them too, despite agreeing on the clunkiness. It's a very rare file that they won't play even almost 3yrs on! One of mine just got replaced by my Proliant HTPC & will be given to a family member, but the other stays in the spare room for when I'm in the dog-house & need to hide from the wife! ;)

A mate just bought an MP-310DT & I had a quick play with it the other day, the new interface is pretty slick & initial impressions are that they've fixed a few of the bugs from previous models & added a few worthwhile features! Not bad at all for a sub-$100 media player!

      • I have the Ap-300. You know that on the Astone forums the community is very active and the company constantly releases firmware update regularly? If there is a format it can't play, an update will usually fix that. Also it does make things a bit quicker too.

        • Yep, the ongoing support & forums over there are pretty good for a lower end manufacturer. I remember reading that they've discontinued official support for the 300/360 unfortunately. I'm not sure what's happening in the homebrew world with these though, maybe someone is unofficially updating codecs etc? That would be nice! :)

  • got one ages ago, pretty good albeit slow if you have 10tb of media..

I heasrd / Read the Boxee gets Cover Arts for all your movies on its own along with information about the movie too. This correct?

I currently use Serviio on my Laptop and stream movies from that to my Sony Blu-Ray Player. Would Boxee be better?

    • +1

yes it does, it is not too bad I have a xtreamer pro and I think it is better then that, but if it does not find the information it is a pain as you need to use the remote/keyboard to track it down. So I use Ember Media Manager to get the info.
