Help with nbn FTTP Set up

Hi, I'm currently at the start point of moving from FTTN to FTTP.

I wanted to know whether nbn connection box can be in a separate room to my router?

I want the box in a room which isn't central in the house, I would then run a network cable from the box to a central point, probably 10-15 metres away.

Is there a problem having the router a bit of a distance from the box?

That is fine. However if you want VoIP you will need to run a separate cable to the NTD ports. NTD ports are for internet only

    • Thanks

No you don't, you just need to connect the ATA to your router.

The Fibre NTD did used to have a UNI-V port in addition to the 4 Internet ports. Dunno if it still exists or if ISP's utilise it.

        • Great to know!

        • The Fibre NTD did used to have a UNI-V port

          Did not know.

How is that different from using the normal port connected to your router?

        • +2

Fibre NTD still has two UNI-V ports. Not many ISPs offer it.

      • It depends on the type of service you have.

If you have a VOIP service through the UNI-V port on the NTD, you will need to connect your phone to it.

If your VOIP comes through your ISP's router, then your phone would need to be connected to that.

edit: already responded to, opened this tab like 2 hours ago but hadn't looked at it yet

  • You probably need to start with having a look at the following page and reading up on what the network in your premises consists of:
    https://www.nbnco.com.au/learn/network-technology/fibre-to-t…

TCP/IP network cabling is a max of 100meters(), so as long as it's less than 100m and the cable is good hen you should be okay. () There are network deice rules as well that come into play, but at home these rules should not come into play.

    • Great, thanks for that info

  • How did you go with actioning the upgrade? Keen to do it myself and my checking my address shows it being available but i have been unable order it with my current provider.

      Signup with a participating ISP.

nbn FTTN to FTTP minimum upgrade speed is 100/20.
nbn FTTC to FTTP minimum upgrade speed is 250/25.

Change from FTTN or FTTC to FTTP by Upgrading to a Faster Speed Plan (Select Locations) @ nbn co via Participating ISPs

      • I am with a participating isp. I'm on fttc and 250/25 is unavailable to order.

        • Who is your ISP and have you called them up asking to swap from FTTC for FTTP? Have you tried ordering FTTP with a different ISP?

          • @Twix: Telstra. Trying daily, get different responses each time. Not wanting to change providers but I have checked out of interest and several are willing to proceed with the upgrade.

            • @QuickdraW: Yep some of their reps have no clue about it. Swap to a different ISP for now and swap back to Telstra later?

          • @Twix: MyRepublic, I'm going from FTTN to FTTP.
I want to stay with them as their price seems to be the best.

            • @noddypiper: MyRepublic pricing is cheap because they only have a POP in Sydney, purchase less bandwidth (CVC) and only have a 350Mbps typical evening speed between 7pm-11pm. If you live elsewhere in AU your connection takes the long way around to NSW before connecting elsewhere. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722515

Where as say Telstra has a TES of 700Mbps and Aussie BB TES of 600Mbps but is $50/$61 more per month. They also have local POPs all over AU. You get what you pay for even on FTTP.

              • +1

                @Twix: Thanks for that info

              • @Twix: Hi, if I live at postcode 2171 and the POP is in Sydney as well would I still expect 350Mbps as a typical evening speed?
Wasn't sure if they simply advertise the average speed across AU.

                • @noddypiper: Yep 350Mbps is the typical evening speed on the Gigabit plan for MyRepublic across AU. Outside of those hours MyRepublic maybe will increase the speeds. This is one way they cut costs.

      • I am looking to upgrade from FTTC to FTTP, is there any reason why i am not able to go 100/20? I would love the have FTTP but 250/25 just seems to be overkill.

        • +1

nbn decision. I assume because nbn make more cash off users on 250/25 than 100/20. You can change to 100/20 later.

          • @Twix: The reason i asked this was i contacted my ISP (superloop) and to check if i am egible for upgrade (yes i am). But they say i am not able to drop down to 100/20 after i upgrade. So i assume if i upgrade, move ISP and i should be able to get 100/20 plan?

            • +3

@[Deactivated]: If you upgrade to FTTP with Superloop you have to stay on 250/25 for 12 months. After that you are allowed to change to 100/20.

The only ISP that is allowing you to change to any speed after 1 month without charge is Exetel. Exetel has been brought out by Superloop.

              • +1

                @Twix: Thank you :)

              • @Twix: you could also pay the $200 fee or stay on fttc which can deliver 100/20

                • @QuickdraW: True but paying $200 is not the OzBargain way when Exetel are doing it for no fee. After that you can swap to any ISP.

While most FTTC connections are suitable there are some that don't reach 100/40 for various reasons and the nbn NCD and DPU can get taken out by lightning.

The company further said, during 2020, it swapped 57,000 NCDs and so far this year it has replaced 44,300 NCDs.

NSW lightning and floods punish NBN FttC connection devices

Have you got anywhere with Telstra?

                  • @Twix: latest story is they have to ring me back to make an appointment

    • It was strange as it wasn't showing Myrepublic listed on the NBN site for the upgrade.
Got on a chat session and was told they can do the upgrade, someone is calling me back as I asked if they could do a better price.
Been with them for a long time so hoping they can do something for me.

I'm going for the 1000/50 plan, currently $99 pm for 6 months then $109.
I don't think any other provider has a price close to this.

      • If MyRepublic isn't on nbn's list I doubt they can process your FTTP order. ISPs have to agree to the T&Cs set by nbn first.

Yeah that’s fine, it also needs a power point nearby.

I want the box in a room which isn't central in the house, I would then run a network cable from the box to a central point, probably 10-15 metres away.

no issue, but running any ethernet cable from the NTD to the router elsewhere would be your responsibility, and won't be done by the NBN installer.

  • Not sure if anyone can help.
We had FTTP done today and the Wi-Fi speeds are good, the Ethernet speeds haven't changed from the FTTN we previously had.

We have restarted the router etc, have high speed cables throughout the house, but Wi-Fi is about double the speed of the hard-wired Ethernet.

    • what link speed does your ethernet connection show?
plug directly into router with shorter ethernet cable and re-test?

      • All sorted, my Ethernet adapter on my pc was showing 100mbps, unplugged a couple of times, and it has updated to 1Gbps.
We have everything going through a switch, so something was going wrong.
