  • tempted!

I just received the HiFiMan Edition XS and as much as the sound is decent, the overall quality of the headphones isn't great and i can't see them lasting very long. wondering if i should return them and go for these instead…..

600 range of headphones are fantastic in terms of build quality, even the Massdrop version.

Can attest to this. I've had the Massdrop 6xx for years and they're pretty solid.

On the other hand, my Hifiman 4xx band fell apart after a couple of years. Which makes me sad, because the 4XX have the better sound signature for what I listen to. One of these days I'll get around to buying a replacement band and resurrecting them.

I've had my pair of HD600's going on 10+ years now.
They still look and sound perfect, but I take care of them too.

The Edition XS walk all over these. Hell, the Sundara do.

These are basically a Sennheiser HD700 in a 600 series shell, and it did little to fix the issues of the 700 headphone.

You're getting slightly better technical performance compared to the HD600, but you get awful tonal balance in return, and EQ won't paper over that.

The 6XX is a much, much, much better deal, even today when sales put it north of $300.

What are you plugging the Edition XS into?

      • Using a Qudelix 5k. It powers the Edition XS nicely.

Concerned more about the quality of the headphones.

        • +3

Well from an audio quality perspective, they're competing at the $1000-$1500 level.

Build quality is cheap but not slapdash, with the biggest issues being the minimum headband adjustment if you have a small head, and the quality of the stock cable in terms of fitment and wear.

It's a loose but comfortable fit, with the enclosure being designed that if you don't get perfect seal, you get a lift at 40Hz that's very pleasant, so there's really no issue with fitment either way. It's a masterpiece of engineering at the price.

With a lot of people getting it at around $550 with discounts, it just walks all over the 660S. If you want a Sennheiser headphone these days, your far and away best value choices are the HD25 (wired), the HD560s, the HD 6XX, and the HD800S. The HD600 goes ok with smoother, slightly-warm sources, but I prefer the timbre of the 6XX/650, and at $400+ it's such a short step to the Edition XS.

The 6XX and the Edition XS compliment each other really well.

            @jasswolf: Thanks for the info.

The fit on the XS is pretty snug and comfortable so no complaints there.

It sounds like i should keep the Edition XS afterall. I have replaced the cable with some OpenHearts - have a set of balanced and unbalanced cables and they feel well made in comparison.

          • +1

@jasswolf: Agree. The sound presentation of the 6XX and XS are very complementary.

  • Are these "better" than the HD600?

    • +3

no, these are darker 6xx/650. even darker than hd600.

most people prefer the 600 or 650 over the 660s, but horses for courses

Ive owned the 660s for about a year and they are fabulous cans. I've also heard the HD600 and they are excellent paired with tubes. If you have the HD600, is this a worthy upgrade, can say unless you comoare them yourself. But the 660s are incredible for vocals, imaging and soundstage.
      Gets better with tubes.

  • The 600s that I have distort bass, it's clearer through my amplifier, kef150s and Krakatoa subwoofer

    • Headphones do not distort bass unless they are terrible, it always comes down to the source and quality of the music played.

      • Thanks for the advice, did a sweep test and the LH speaker rattled from 20-70hz. Must have been what I could hear.

        • That's when you need warranty.

  • I have the 6XX, these should be very good earphones

$195 USD shipped. I've had them for a few years and fantastic. Very, very similar to the 660 S. Worth reading / watching some reviews and making a decision for yourself.

  • I have the 6XX which was more reasonably priced than the HD600S. They are good, but only suitable for midrange-focused genres (acoustic, classic etc.). So while the midrange is absolutely fantastic in these, at this price point I would go for the Sundara instead. I didn't expect to enjoy treble as much until I got the Sundara. HD560S is also pretty good for some better lower range and better soundstage than the HD600-series. The 6XX are absolutely useless for directional sound in gaming. It feels like the sound is coming from inside your ears and direction is either completely left, completely right or on top of your head. Trying to locate choppers from that is impossible.
