  • 4 to 6 not bad for inflation

    • the bbq community disagrees

      • +2

bbq community is too busy posting pics of heat bead hauls on facebook to disagree too much.

    • +1

      That's 50% increase. That's pretty bad.

      • All Putin's fault

  • +1

no longer supporting heatbeads, id buy any other brand

    • Why?

      • +9

$70 for there lump that was $40 last year alot of people have decided to go elsewhere

        • +1

Nice to know I'm not the only one thinking that seeing the rate of price rise 🤯 of the black bag each time I look through Bunnings

        • +2

Outrageously priced for some lightly toasted Indonesian fenceposts

      • -1

        Maybe they're micro USB

  • +7

Heat beads products has gone too expensive. Other companies pumped up their prices by 10-15% only.

    • agreed

    • +1

Every other company has done a 40% increase.

Even gidgee is $70 a bag now. Mallee root is $50.

There are no backpacker's packing it up in qld.

  • Where do people buy their real charcoal from for bbq?

    • +1

Some folks are buying this one: https://www.barbequesgalore.com.au/p/pro-smoke-18kg-premium-…

They claim the big bag has the best lumps, and the lighter bags has shit pieces in them.

      • Are they the size of a hat / cap? If not then its not chunky hehhe

    • +1

What about getting some from shops in lakemba?

    • Buy from local BBQ stores. The Weber stuff (mallee root) isn’t bad, the BGE stuff is great (but pricey). Lately I’ve been using Gidgee from a local shop, good stuff but takes a bit to get going.

  • +1

I get the hex ones about $14 for 8kg for the thailand one's (crumble easy) and $24 for 12kg made in malaysia. (Lasts longer). One to keep warm other for bbqs because everyone knows gas is ass

    • What is the brand name of the Malaysian made one?

      • I would like to know too

  • +1

How does charcoal go up 150% in 2 years?

    • +1

When everyone and their dog decided low and slow was the bees knees.

      • +4

Cost of shipping a big bulky bag of charcoal 5000kms probably has something to do with it too…

    • +1

You'd think a country like Australia, that's abundant with coal, would be super cheap.
I say the same thing everytime I see my electricity bill too. 😕

      • Coal price has went from $50usd to $450usd in the last two years. As more coal mines close and royalties are added it's only going to increase.

    • +1

Border's close and we have no backpackers to pack it.

  • Why my Heat Beads burn too slowly? Each time I used half pack of Redheads firelighters because those lighters soon died out before the the briquettes even got warm. They finally got completely white after 1 hour after constantly adding new firelighters. However, 4 pieces of firelighters are sufficient for my Redheads briquettes to burn. Weird.

    • +2

Maybe they're wet. You should be using a chimney to light coals, anyway.

      • Impossible, they came in a box brand new I just opened it.

        • It absorbs water from the air, those boxes aren't hermetically sealed.

    • +1

Get one on these when they have 30% off and you will be up and running in no time.

Just get the generic one from Bunnings, sub $10

        https://www.bunnings.com.au/jumbuck-3-7l-bbq-charcoal-chimne…

        • This works fine but don't expect it to last long.

          • @JaxSantiago: They last years. Not forever but at that price

            • @Laziofogna: Depends on how often you use it. Mine lasted over a year or 2, before the rivets failed. Hopefully Jumbuck has done work on it.

I found it's best to drill more holes into this Jumbuck or make the holes bigger, to improve air circulation and thus light the charcoals/briquettes quicker.

        • +3

I use this regularly. Can confirm it's great

        • +1

Been using this for awhile aswell.

          Can confirm it works well.

        • +1

Fyi, mines about 3 years old and use it a dozen or more times a year. I store it outside under the lid of the bbq and there is no rust.

I looked at the other ones Bunnings were selling and this one was easily the best built and didn't have any stupid design issues. It was also the cheapest. I would have happily paid twice the asking price. So far the rivets looks fine, but if they go I'll just replace the rivets, or unit. But I've got my monies worth so I'm already happy.

    • I had the same issue awhile back on a couple times with Heat Beads using a chimney. Bloody thing took forever. Even had the hair dryer out to try speed it up.

Put it down to somehow they got wet. Even though was an unsealed bag.

The rest just went in the bin.

      • I'm not buying regular heat beads again for similar reasons. Though I'm not binning them either just using them all.

Using the same jumbuck chimney and lighter cubes, method, etc. I find the these take almost double the time to get well lit compared to other brands I've used, particularly coconut based briquettes. It's been a few times and multiple bags so don't think it was a bad bag per se either.

  • I can light a full size leb style bbq 80cm x 30 cm in less then an hour, using one of those $20 gas stoves, a $9 chimney from bunnings and a few fire lighters, also useful is a usb fan or garden blower

    • +1

      What do you mean Uleh…..

    • +1

Yep good call, I agree a small usb fan does help a lot !

    • +1

My Leb father in law uses an old hair dryer!

      • How about a leaf blower uleh?

    • Those opolar electric dusters work wonders. I can forge a sword when those things are blowing

  • +1

Damn is this Single origin? Whoops my bad thought this was a Coffee post.

  • Does anyone know: do these get restocked during the week if they are sold out already?

Had to go to two Coles tonight to find some, but just in case I needed to grab some more, was wondering if they would get restocked, or they are gone.

    • I usually ask for a raincheck at Coles/Woolworths when specials have gone out of stock.

      • Ah, i thought they stopped doing rainchecks since the pandemic - but I guess maybe they have started doing them again?

        • Coles says they've been doing rainchecks for ages, only stopped very briefly. Woolies may not be doing rainchecks still. :/

          • @kwchaz: Ah right - we mainly shop at Woolworths, so probably just thought it was across the board. Woolworths website still says no rainchecks (although havent confirmed instore).

  • +1

  • +1

Thanks Op, Managed to snatch up the last 4 bags from my local

  • Grabbed 30 bags. Good price

  • -1

Heat beads are such a waste of money

  • Is it just me or these have a chemical taste vs actual lump charcoal?

    • +1

Do you use those white fire starters? They contribute to that taste.

      • I do use those, but I use them on lump charcoal aswell and I don't notice the taste

    • +2

Try drizzling oil on some paper towel and stuffing it in an empty toilet roll. Makes a good firelighter.

    • It's definitely a different smell to natural charcoal, not sure how to describe it but wouldn't call it chemical. I can't taste it in the meat after grilling or even slow cooks.

  • +1

Thanks for the heads up OP. Managed to grab 5 bags from my local. Starting to stock up now for Chrissie. Got me a whole pig and a slab of beef to do for spittin'.
