Why Do People Still Want to Order from The Fast Food Drive Thru Speaker Instead of The App?

Yes I'm having a whinge at slow people.

Now that Maccas has pretty much sorted out the app issues, why do people still want to order from the speaker? One reason I can think of is you can't request a specific Happy Meal toy.

I was stuck behind a woman who kept turning her head to the back seat multiple times and took minutes to order just a few items.

$60 and 30 minutes prep buys a family of four home cooked fillet steak and fresh veges or four dodgy maccas burgers that look and taste like they were assembled by a couple of crackheads in a carpark.

Macca's is just really poor value compared to the alternatives.

        • Plus time to go shopping. Really depends on how you value your time.

        • McD family meal is much cheaper than that

        • $5.95*4 = $23.80

Your family gets 4 double beef and bacon meals and waits <10 minutes for the food.

          30 minutes prep

Sir, you're forgetting the time taken to go and buy the ingredients and then once you are done eating, wash the utensils.

          • +2

@watwatwat: I find shopping once a week, cooking, loading dishwasher is far better health wise, time wise and financially.

            • @prodrome: I agree but we use it as it’s good to have a break from that every now and then. If they are doing it every week, even if “only once”, then that’s another issue from a health point of view.

    • +2

Agreed. Expensive for what you get. Hih sugar, salt and carb food that does nothing good for you, only bad. Unless I'm overseas…..then I'll Google the maccas menu and try some new crazy foods as a once off. Haven't eaten McDonald's in Australia in years.

  • +2

Its illegal to use the phone/app when driving.

  • +4

I'm surprised at the number of people on here who are not a fan of online ordering.

Ordering on the apps is awesome imo. I don't have to rush to spit out my order and forget something and regret it. I can make endless customisations to the burgers without the employee or people behind me rolling their eyes.

Main thing I love is that I can play with different ordering styles to find the best value. Eg should I buy items separately or is it cheaper as a meal/bundle etc.
Maccas also now have reward points which is great because you can get heaps of free food now and almost always have a 20% discount offer which saves a lot. As ozbargainers we should all be on top of this.

And I can go there with the fam, order on the app and they bring the food to the table without me standing in line and constantly being asked if I'm there for an uber pickup because I have brown skin.. 😑

    • I too am surprised.

      • I'm surprised you mentioning you're surprised, since you're the original poster and have already stated that you are surprised.

        Are you surprised very easily?

    • Play with different ordering styles? I kinda stopped there. Surely if you have a full on job a family and kids just making it to the drive through window is an achievement in itself. And usually one of the kids has your phone anyway!

      • Haha no way. I always check what the best value options are by playing around with the app.
Kids can wait if they want their chips and nuggets.

That Maccas app took my money but didn't place the order on a large family order. I think it was around $80. The store said I had to deal with the help line for the app and the app help line said I had to deal with the store. This is despite having proof that the money came from my credit card. It took a month to sort out and threats to involve NSW Fair Trading. I uninstalled the app and will never use the Maccas one again. Never had any such issue with any other fast food app.

    • McDonalds: Free Money?? I'm Lovin' It.

      • Well in the end they also only gave Maccas credit so yeah. If they can't keep track of the money they know what they can do with their app.

    • The app did have issues previously. How long ago was this?

      • January last year so yes a while. However after the treatment I received, I won't be using it again. In any case an app that "loses" a transaction so that the staff can't look it up and refund it is a total fail.

    • +1

Big tunoff point here. I don't want to deal with an app/mysterious dept if something goes wrong.

  • +2

I think you're forwardly backward ordering fast food from an app and picking it up through drive thru in your electric car. Sorry. Not Sorry.

  • +2

can I also just say, if you have a big (profanity) order, park your car and go order inside, thanks

    • That always seem to happen when I'm stuck behind a ute and the tradie is ordering for everyone on the site

      • Yep majority of tradies don’t care for others that much is clear. That’s why when we get one that actually does what they say they will you keep their details. It’s a shame that majority ruin it for the good ones…

    • I am wondering why that it. People standing in the queue inside will have to wait longer instead. At least you are sitting down on your arse in the comfort of your car. Wait 4 min more. Won't kill you.

  • +1

Now that Maccas has pretty much sorted out the app issues

Have they now? Please explain how. It's a privacy hell and the only reason I use their piece of $hit app is there is no other way I could place an advanced order that I can pick up while on the way to work. Even then, the experience is really absurd (always forced to use location tracking etc)

why do people still want to order from the speaker?

Why not? If you know exactly what you want to order and you're always driving it's a time saver

    • The app used to have payments not going through, not detecting your location so it can't detect that you're at the restaurant…

    • always forced to use location tracking etc

So…. people don't accidentally order to the wrong store?

This has got to be a huge factor in helping prevent accidental orders and all the problems that come with that.

      • +1

people don't accidentally order to the wrong store?

Have you not used any other app which doesn’t require always on location to place an order?

        What is happening 🤷‍♂️

  • +1

Couldn't agree more. Nothing more frustrating than getting to a drive-thru, pulling up behind someone, and then sitting there waiting why they figure out WTF they want, or sit there rattling off some giant order with others in the car. Same (profanity) who'll then leave a metre or so gap between the vehicle in front of them… because why move up and make space for the people waiting behind you?!

    • What difference does it make leaving room? Do you think you're going somewhere fast?

  • +4

Less apps = Preserving the privacy & freedom (to an extent) of people

    • That's not what Ben Dover said when dealing with Mr si.

      That's right unlimited.

  • Because HJs app sucks big donkey schl0ng & I may or may not be hungover.

  • Mac Donald's makes it much better not dealing with humans while getting it cheaper or free.

Hungry jacks still requires scanning to human ☹️

  • Because rhe app doesnt work 100%

  • +5

The one I don’t get is how people will line up behind 40 other cars waiting at the drive through, but won’t park and walk into the completely empty store.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen the drive through line out the driveway, only to park, go in, order, pay and leave before any of the cars I drove past to park are even at the order speaker.

I don’t use the app if I go through drive through, because it sucks. It’s slow to use, often has missing items from the menu or doesn’t have the options I want. And while I’m sitting in the parking lot to order, 5 cars have driven past me to get inline and order at the speaker.

Getting bent out of shape over losing 30 seconds waiting is the same as getting your coffee order and being told to wait for it in a parking bay and refusing to move.

  • +2

Because you shouldn't drive and use your phone.

  • Call me old fashioned but I don’t touch my phone while I’m driving. Not to change songs, not to answer calls, not to order Macca’s on the app, not even to use ApplePay (I keep my debit card on me for this exact reason).

    • +1

It would be much more distracting and dangerous for me to fiddle through my wallet to get a card out vs using my phone to pay for something. Bravo to you for having that extraordinary ability.

    • +1

Who said anything about using the app while driving? Common sense should tell you to order before you get in the car and then when you arrive you tap that you’re at the location! Plus using Apple Pay is easier, safer and more secure.

      • what if you're on the road and just decided to get maccas on the way home?

        • I personally have never done that as I plan my meals out. If I did happen to decide on the road, I’d just pull over and order on the app before pulling into the drive thru. Plus I’m not usually by myself so I’d just ask a passenger to order it if I was to drop in.

          • +1

@bobwokeup: Imagine planning to eat Macca's, like it's going out fine dining 😂

            • @brendanm: It’s called being organised, you should try it one day. You don’t give up with your ridiculously stupid comments 🤦🏽‍♂️

              • @bobwokeup: McDonald's is a shithole though, planning to go out to it is just sad.

I'm organised and plan ahead when I'm going out to an actual restaurant, one that has bookings, and no drive through.

        • +1

If this happens to me I just park in the Maccas car park, order on the app and then go through drive thru. If there’s a queue at the drive thru I’ll join the queue and order whilst in the queue. Doesn’t take long.

Also there’s something called a “one time code” on the app, which I think helps to identify you if you order at drive thru, so you can collect points. Could be wrong as I never really use that feature.

You don’t have to order it whilst driving 100 kms on the freeway, that’s dangerous and illegal.

          • +1

@Ghost47: Exactly stop speaking common sense most Aussies don’t get that.

Yes you can give them a four digit code and then you’ll get the points for the order. Don’t know why you would though as it takes longer than actually ordering it through the app.

I reckon there would be some people stupid enough to place an order on the freeway!

  • +7

One day, you'll learn about diversity in age, skills, people who like to use technology and people you who don't. Did you know there are banks that still need to support cheque books, deposit books, bank books that people were still using back in the 80s, 90s? Yes these people are old, just like how you'll be. If people want to use an app, let them, if they don't then so be it. Who cares anyway?

    • +1

Well those who are least likely to use the apps are perhaps the ones who could least afford to spend money

    • -5

The people who don’t like to use technology are usually uneducated or don’t want to better themselves.

      • +4

        better themselves

        By

        Eating McDonald's.

        Lol.

        • Do you mean bye?

You don’t even know what I order haha I order coffee and if I eat I don’t get the bun as it’s full of sugar but you know this already as you clearly know everything, like every other boomer.

          • +1

            @bobwokeup:

            Do you mean bye?

            Ah, no, I definitely don't.

            • +1

@brendanm: Then you make no sense at all.

              • +3

@bobwokeup: Better themselves by eating McDonald's.

                Vs

                Better themselves bye eating McDonald's.

                Which one is correct?

                • +1

@brendanm: Oh my god really. I was making a point, not about Maccas app specifically but about people who don’t adopt technology. You clearly don’t get it so I give up.

                  • +2

@bobwokeup: People can have the ability technology, and not like it. I've used computers since the Commodore 64, owned the first phone with an MP3 player etc etc, I don't want to have, and use, an app for every stupid place I may go to once in a while. There is no advantage whatsoever, I just want to give a person my order.

                    • +1

@brendanm: I highly doubt you have the ability but let’s just go with that as it’s the internet and we can’t prove anything. Also the fact you said there is no advantage tells me everything!!!

  • I've used their app multiple times and in the majority of the times the order doesn't process/finalise. When I go into the store with the order number they shrugged their shoulders and I have to reorder.

    • Once you finish order and it goes to a white screen, just restart the app and it lets you complete.

  • I think i remember cops booking ppl using the app in the drive thru because your using your phone while driving. $5.95 meal + $1000 fine.

    • +2

Wouldn't the drive thru be private property of the business though?

      • It’s still a public accessible road. The police had to come out publicly and say using devices to tap and pay was acceptable at drive throughs.

  • +1

Are the family meal deals available on the app?

There's a McFavourites for $33 and a similar larger deal, which I usually get in store but can't find it on the app.

  • +1

Because it's usually less work to just roll up and say what you want rather than going through your phone?

  • -1

Maybe they don’t like using their phone apps while driving? It can add significantly to the cost of a Happy Meal (if they’re caught) and make it a Not-so-happy-meal.

  • +5

because most of the time when i have Maccas, it’s always a last minute decision. I’m not sure I’ve ever had premeditated Maccas

  • +2

I didn’t even know you could order through the app and use the drive through. Even as a tech savvy person I wouldn’t use it.
I’ll either use the drive through because it’s a last minute choice, or use the app/booth and pickup in store.

  • Because my MyMaccas app got hacked so I changed my password to a 20 character secure password and it got hacked again within 24hrs. Seems to be a security flaw in the app

  • +2

If you happen to be driving and decide to get drive-thru McDonalds, makes no sense to stop, pull out your phone, order then keep driving. May as well just drive up and say what you want. You should still get it out to scan your code to accrue points though.

  • If your alone, using your phone to navigate menus is dangerous while driving. It will save a lot of time just ordering at the speaker rather than pull over and make the order.

Im long past my maccas days but when i do dip into that sludge, i just make an order at the window, it takes 15 seconds, as opposed to downloading another app, spending 2 minutes making my order, then talking to the person anyway. While waiting for 6 peoples orders to be made anyway.

  • +3

People who don't know EXACTLY what they're ordering do not belong in the drive thru, they should be going into the store to order.

  • +2

    …aaaaaand THEN?

    • +2

      NO -AND THEN-!!

  • +1

App all the way. Discounts are pretty good as are the points.

You also avoid needing to do this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cnVyvELhDA

    • I love the delivery of the line "Good evening, Wendy".

  • Can't order certain items like coffee with additional flavoured syrup (e.g hazelnut) from the app. Also not everyone plans to go to Maccas beforehand, it could be a spontaneous decision while they're driving home.

And there's a million and one reasons why (they don't want the app on their phone, they didn't bring their phone. etc). Really who bloody cares, it's a few minutes of your time and you probably spent even longer writing this post to whinge about it.

  • Every time i go to KFC there is a long line of people waiting to order their food.

The three self service kiosks are usually empty and almost nobody is using the app to order. The app is cheaper and you can easily customise your order.

  • you get your food faster through drive through. Theres less waiting time as drive through orders have higher priority

  • I have no issue speaking to people I love apps and self serve kiosks, mainly because of my thick accent, young kids+headset and background noise is not a great mix for being undertsood.

I will park up in the car park make my order on the phone tick that Im here and drive straight through, easy. Also can make use of the specials and perks the apps offer everytime. Do I want a $13 large meal, no I'll take the special $7 meal with an extra burger and be a guts.

  • Half the apps log me out every time and I don't use em frequently enough.
It's just easier for me to talk to someone.

  • +3

I think you are assuming everyone regularly orders fast food.

I would never download a fastfood food app unless it had significant discount (then I would just delete it) as I don't want the app on my phone as very rarely use it.
I would order fast-food maybe a few times a year, so why slow down my phone and have a McDonald's banner on my phone.

If you are a regular user and get some small discounts then it's probably worth it. But everyone has different habits.

    • and have a McDonald's banner on my phone

What banner, you don't get a banner.

  • +1

I only order family boxes - this isnt on the app. Maccas need to put them on.

    • Yeap, strange they don't have every item on the menu; apparently for them, sharing means eating piles of McNuggets.

  • +1

Kfc App - works fine, I use it and prefer it over the staff that always seem to screw something up.

MyMaccas - Garbage app, I use it just for the deals & even then I always tell it to give me the code which I say to staff. I refuse to put CC info in it, that is rediculous; where is the paypal? I also do not make any actual order outside of a good deal.

HungryJacks app - Dont even have it installed, I tried it a couple times; the app is horrible and slow. Spend upwards of 30mins just trying to shake and win, if trying to order it would crash. Horrible experience, paper vouchers are great.

Subway app - lol subways is a ripoff.

I also avoid using menulog/deliveroo/whatever as there always appears to be a discrepency between the apps pricing and actual pricing I can receive in-store (in-store being cheaper).

  • +1

Maybe this is the worlds way of telling you to eat less McDonalds?

  • +2

I don't get fast food often, I can't be bothered downloading an app, making an account, giving whatever company all my personal information, putting my credit card in, then going into the app and ordering. It's easier to just tell the person the person what you want and then tapping your card.

  • +3

Reasons not to order via Apps when compared to speaker interaction:
    1. Social. It is nice to see human interaction. App doesn't do it.
    2. App Order got lost. It happened before to me but obviously you don't get charged until you are there so it didn't affect but it certainly gave sour ordering experience.
    3. Can't use phone in car for impulse buying. "Dad! I'm hungry" while passing a McD on the way home from sports. "Plan early" is not an answer.
    4. App Order accepted but the venue's machine broke. Happened a lot to ice creams and some limited edition stores such as Rowville VIC McD that can do Chocolate McFlurry but it is exclusive to that site but the Apps don't have that option. This leads to point 5.
    5. As the result of 4, you got an order that is different to what you asked for and they are too busy to deal with you.
    6. Can't choose happy meal toys with App or maybe different coke glass colour in recent promotion. Self explanatory
    7. App itself sometimes took too long to order when you are instore vs face to face ordering / drive

Having said that, if my order costs more than $38, I would use the app because of permanent 20% discount.

  • +3

Why would you order on an app and then physically go and pick it up?
Imagine ordering on amazon and then driving up to the warehouse.

    • App-only discounts.

Imagine ordering on amazon and then driving up to the warehouse.

? Amazon offers delivery and it's free or cheap.
