I don’t have a yacht. Otherwise I would have liked this!

    • +100

It comes with a $7.95 ship!

      • In that case I will enter the sea for just $107.90!

        • Actually $97~

10% off if you sign up

      • +1

Most I can do is a 3D Benchy at that price

    • +6

First you buy the jacket, then you buy the yacht.

      • Why not the the 2 for 1 special and get a yacket?

  • +5

Don't doubt it but curious as to how you came up with the cost price figure?

    • +56

I work there, just a foot solider

      • +1

        Wow.. so 10x mark up?

        • +1

          Yes

          • +3

@vaskothefrog: Wait until they see the cost price of cables

          • @vaskothefrog: So it's mainly brand equity right? 10x markup seems outrageous..

            • +1

@stockastics: I don't know what to tell you… Don't befriend someone who works for a designer brand.

            • @stockastics: It's about standard for normal brands tbh, I used to work at a lesser brand and their mark up was the same (yd.), $9 cost for a shirt, sold at 89.99

            • +1

@stockastics: Its pretty standard, I used to work at anaconda during uni and most home brand stuff was about 10x I remember things like denali hike tent sold for $300, maybe $250 on sale, had cost price of $22. A denali hike pack sold for around $200-250, had a cost price of like $17.
Branded stuff was only about 2-3x markup but there would be more middlemen involved as anaconda just buy it from distributors etc.
It like when u go to a pub and pay $10 for a beer which on its own prob costs less than $1.

Branded bikes were about the same 2-3x.
My partner bought a $10k cervello bike recently and wondered whether the local bike shop would price match somewhere else by reducing it by $100. I told they prob buy it for $5k or less of course they would. She was a bit shocked when I told her and yes they price matched lol.

              • @Ozbfan: The pub analogy makes sense. I usually try to buy during mark downs (not always the best stock) or buy few branded clothes that last for few years.

        • +6

normal in apparel retail. welcome to reality

          • +4

@shabaka: Problem is they probably paid $100000 to a designer to come up with the jacket design, $20000 to send someone to China and find the right factory etc these need to be spread to the cost of the products made in addition to materials

            • +6

@FutureTech: yep that's why I am asking below if that's including operational cost

usually they have agents in China (they are paid Chinese salaries) who talk to factories, and facilitate ordering. factories make stuff for the highest bidder, and all this has to go via Chinese government, who gets their cut and also makes sure prices are level across the country. you gotta have agents who speak Chinese in order to deal with them

a lot of retailers don't even design much, factories send them what they can make this season, and retailers choose what exact styles to order, what fabrics colors buttons etc. and order in bulk. often similar items (same design, but different fabric or slightly different trim, or buttons) end up on the shelves of different stores with different branding (and different markup, too)

              apparel business is ruthless, mate

            • @FutureTech: 10x is the retail mark-ups. You're talking about the wholesale cost.

        • +1

how else they gonna pay your wages and super?

      • +3

is that landed cost (materials, manufacturing, factory QA, delivery incl. charges-taxes-levies and dropped off at the store doorstep)

        or landed plus operational

      • +1

Not surprised. I used to work at yd before and their markups/margins were insane as well.

Since you work there, should you not disclose your affiliation with the brand?

        • +4

          Who cares

        • +1

I mean YD all the items prob cost 2c because they're all terribly shit in every way and certainly made by sweatshop labour (but then aren't most things….)

      • But is it well made at least? Higher quality materials, stitching and no sweatshop labour?

  • +8

    Composition & Care
    Outer: 100% nylon
    Lining: 100% polyester

    • It really is an average jacket. In the three years I’ve owned it I wore it once when I went on a yacht other than that it’s in the cupboard.

      • +6

Think you're taking the "yatch jacket" label a bit too literally there..

  • $145 last time around. Didn’t get many upvotes at that price.

  • Have they put a draw string on the hood yet

  • Uhh, no click and collect!

    • no option to pick up

  • +1

Thanks, snagged one up! Couldn't find anything cheap to take the cart over $100 for free shipping though.

  • +4

    Hideous

    • +1

How do you feel so strongly about a neutral coloured typical jacket design? Maybe the Hilfiger logo on the back…. but still surely branding this hideous is a bit OTT

      • It's the whole branding that I find gross. Even though this is one of the more subtle pieces of Hillfiger clothing, it's still as ugly as sin.

Makes swosh swosh sounds when walking. Plastic material rubbing arms to body

    • +5

      George….. What's that….swooshing sound….

      • Must be part of the unadvertised sale

  • How warm is this jacket? Useless in Melbourne?

    • +2

Bruzz says thin, so back to my Macpac it is. Even cheaper than this when it was on special.

    • +1

I wouldn't wear it for warmth. Fairly thin and you'd be realistically wearing it in spring and summer.

  • +14

Shame it says Hilfiger on the back collar.

    • +1

Was thinking the same…. a bit loud.

    • +2

Shame it says Hilfiger on the back collar.

Nothing says wannabe loser like big loud brand-names splashed all over your clothes :)

      • I think having "wannabe loser" printed on your clothes beats that

  • +6

I nearly bought it, then noticed the cost price as per description & closed my browser.

    • I'd imagine Nike's cost prices are much lower. Does that mean you don't wear their shoes?

    • Tim Cook has left this conversation..

  • I was buying it in White, but no discount on that colour.

    • Good news. At the time I replied to you (9:31 AM 14-Sep-2022), the white one is on sale, too!
      Enjoy.

      • Missed it, thanks for the heads up..

    Eshays are gonna love this

  • waterproof?

    • +8

No. This particular jacket is designed specifically for land yachts.

      • Should have been called a 'car jacket' then

I actually tried one of these on at TK Maxx, it was about $140 from memory. Didn't get it because it was a short fit and the big 'Hilfilger' name on the collar looked chav…

      You're using them wrong mate

  • My recent online shopping experience with Tommy:

Bought 5 items, 2 faulty items (leaked ink on white shirt, unfinished back pocket on a jogger). Had to send both back for refund

  • +8

Im convinced the people who comment "Eshay" on this have never actually seen an Eshay

    • +3

      And secretly infatuated with eshays

    • +1

100%, they'd call them the proper name "lads", "eshay" is just something they say.

      • Why do they say it?

        • Why do people say "(profanity)"? It's multipurpose

    • Adidas sweats, trainers, that 'over the shoulder' bag they all seem to have…

    • -1

      ^
      found the Eshay…

  • Is there an age limit for wearing these jackets ?

I guess if you have to ask, you're too old 😅

    • There isn't an age limit to these. I see customers of all age brackets purchase them.

  • Do girls dig guys wearing Tommy Yacht jacket?
