TPG nbn Plan Fees Increased

Very disappointed got a message from TPG saying my NBN 50 plan will increase to $75 from next month. Was with TPG for 10 years. Called customer service to reduce price no luck.

Can anyone suggest a good plan 50/20. Currently paying $70.

Can everyone provide details of your current provider?

Well, if the $5 extra per month is too much, time to churn.
Everyone wants the lowest prices these days so don't expect so-called loyalty discounts. Don't like the price? Just move.

    • +3

      Any suggestions as to where?

      • +1

I have never used NBN myself, so I don't have any first hand suggestions. But a quick search returns stacks of NBN providers.

To be honest, I just wouldn't change for the sake of $5/month if I was already happy with the speeds and everything else. Might end up with a shitty ISP with lots of outages etc.

        • Yeh $5 isn't much provided happy with the service.

          • @silenthillrocks: But in 5 years time , 5 a month is alot.

            • @CyberMurning: $75 might be an awesome deal in 5 years. Can't predict that far ahead.

              • +5

@silenthillrocks: Strange how prices around the world for fast internet seem to be going down while the speeds increases, yet here in Oz, same speed, prices up.

We get severely rorted here on how much we pay for our internet.

      • Move to 5G internet dude, ISP is highly like to keep that at low price because they dont have to pay a single cent to the NBN that way, and instead put competition to CRAP NBN FTTN.

Modem cost is only one time cost that too ISP will techincally give for free after like 3 years of staying with them.

5G plans start from $60 + (@ great decent speeds) , Already $15 cheaper AND 1st month free + free modem after 3 years. All ISP's kinda guarantee minimum 50 Mbps speed anyway, when in reality they can easily reach speeds of upto 700 Mbps (telstra/optus network) that direct competition to FTTP/FTTH

        • Despite the negs, this might be good advice for you, OP.

          Key word though, "might".

5G internet is another option, not THE option. Depending on whether you get good coverage, and if it suits your usage patterns, you might never look back. Definitely worth looking into though.

          • @Morien: I guess people too worried about the millions of dollars of tax payers money spent by dodgy government on FTTN more than cost of living of general public.

        • Thought about it, not sure if speed is consistent.

          • @elgrande: If it is consistently above 50 Mbps and you were going to go for NBN 50 plan anyways. ? then why not save up ?

Normally 5G fluctuates from like 80 - 300 Mbps (vodafone network). Even at the 50 Mbps speed worst case scenario, it is still better cost value.
Sure if speed isn't good enough to reach 50 Mbps or your desired NBN equivalent then sure consider NBN then (but i reckon that's quite rare, given you are in 5G coverage, and do a speed test on mobile before getting connection)

            • @USER DC: How is 5G's ping in your area?

Any drop outs that you notice, even if a couple of seconds?

              • @JimB: worst it gets is 80 Mbps, generally anywhere from 120-180 Mbps usually best is like 330 Mbps occasionally. usual best is like 270 Mbps.

Nevermind you asked for ping, which is like 50 ms -70 ms

                • @USER DC: Ping of 50 ms -70 ms is a lot higher than NBN but shouldn't be noticable day to day.

I'm perfectly happy with 50Mbps. As long as I can stream in 4K I'm happy.

                  • @JimB: apparently changing the DNS to google's dns made the ping a lot faster from 50-70 ms down to 20-35 ms

                    https://www.speedtest.net/result/13650696370

                    • @USER DC: Sounds like a real alternative to NBN

                      Any data limits?

                      • @JimB: Depends on the provider.

Telstra has capped at 1 TB a month I think

Optus has either unlimited SPEED plan, or 100 Mbps speed plan

Vodafone/TPG/iinet speed's capped at 50 Mbps or 100 Mbps (For new users). I was lucky enough to score the deal from vodafone at discounted price during last year black friday @$42.5 a month (until November end after which it'd be $85 unless I drop speeds down to their current capped plans).

Nevertheless I think I'd still continue with 5G instead of NBN

    • Exactly right !

Surely you know someone with a CBA credit card.

    https://www.more.com.au/personal/commbank-nbn-plans

    Currently paying $54 for 50/20

    • so we dont have to be commbank customer ? yes i dont bank with cba right now, or have their CC.
possible to just open saving account?

      also, is the provider good?

      • +1

you do have to be a commbank customer as payment method must be a CBA credit/debit card.
If you change the card, the discount stops.

I'm getting really good speeds with More Telecom, currently it's:

        Download: 254.39 Mbps
        Upload: 23.03 Mbps
        Ping: 2 ms
        Connection Type: Ethernet
        Server: TasmaNet Pty Ltd

        • +2

Gotta have 254.39 Mbps Download speeds for those quick replies JV?

'If you change the card, the discount stops.' This is incorrect.

Family member of mine used my CBA card to sign up. After reading the T&Cs https://www.more.com.au/policies/critical-information-summar… we found there's no requirement to continue to pay with CBA. So they started paying using their non-CBA card, saved repaying me each month.

          • @JimB: JVs upload speeds are a bit lacking. 2mbps less than what he's paying for.

            • +1

@silenthillrocks: Good point. If I was JV I'd be asking for a further 10% discount based on those uploads.

      • Just a CBA savings account will do, it will come with a debit card anyway.

        No problems with the service.

  • Exetel is a good one.

I signed up with More just a week earlier after 15 years with TPG. Used my own BYO Router and works perfectly. This will save me $15 per month for 12 months. After 12 months if there is any other offer will change again. There's no such as loyalty to stay with same provider anymore.

    • Agreed. Terrible customer service I mentioned 10 year loyal customer they don’t care

    • BYO router are you using same TPG one ?

      • +1

I am currently using Huawei AR129 Router. I have tested with Tplink router provided by tpg which works fine as well. Basically any router does work depending on a connection type. BTW MORE does have a excellent support if you need help setting up the router.

    • Hey mate - I've just done the same but having issues setting up my TPG TPLink Archer modem. Was your service with TPG cancelled before updating your modem details with More? TPG still haven't cancelled my service and I'm wondering if that's preventing me from connecting to More. Thanks!

Move to superloop (50/20 is $54 for first 6 months then $70)

  • +1

or spintel for $53 for the first 6 months, after that 65

  • +1

or leaptel for ($60) for the first 12m https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722467

iiNet's board voted to sell to TPG back in 2016 because they saw the writing on the wall. NBN wholesale prices are just so steep that once they could no longer sell ADSL2+ or Naked DSL, there would be no profit in it. Everyone wants a cheaper price, but the ISPs just can't swing it and be profitable.

You say you've been with TPG for 10 years. I'll assume you've been on the same plan for that entire time.

$70 in 2012 is worth $90.15 today. Someone more knowledgable than I am can correct me about NBN's wholesale pricing, but I don't believe they have gone down over that time. You're getting a major discount still.

Change providers for sure. Leaptel posted a few days ago with a pretty good offer: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722467 - But until the NBN lower their prices, it is what it is.

bastards!…i think im on this plan. havent been told about any increases…yet. im paying $59.99 atm
how did they contact you OP?

    • +2

If you're paying $60 a month you're not on the same plan and the OP or me. They emailed me advising of the price increase to $75.

      • yeah youre right, its the nbn25…hope they dont raise prices across the other plans too?

        • +2

The TPG website says the plan prices will go up for all speed plans under 100Mbps due to raise in NBN wholesale costs.

In another post by Leaptel rep on this forum confirmed that and mentioned that there are some negotiations going on between NBN and ISPs on the wholesale prices and more likely that the prices of plans 100Mbps and upwards would get some discounts in near future if everything went well with negotiations and consultations.

          • @ashtdp: thanks….thats not great as i have an nbn/phone/talk bundle with them. anything more than an increase of $5-10 a month is not going to be acceptable

      Text message
Hi ****, TPG is increasing prices for some NBN services. Your NBN broadband price will increase to $74.99/mth from 21/09/2022. This amount does not include any fees for add-ons which you may currently be paying (these will not change). Please refer to the email we sent you for more details. To contact us, see our information page: sms.tpg.com.au/nbnpricechange

I got the same message and did a bit of a hunt around. Best price I could find for an equivalent plan was Flip doing $54/m for the first 6 months then $64.90/m after, saving $120 off the new TPG price in the first 6 months then $10 a month after that.

I was planning on switching to them unless anyone here has advice to avoid them?

  • I thought about it, and with everything going up i just decided to give the TPG 12mbps plan a go. We're not heavy users in the house, typically only 1 netflix/ binge screen at a time. Slower speed hardly noticeable atm. So now i pay 5 less instead of 5 more, 10 in my pocket for upcoming petrol price increase….

    • 12/1 plan is below nbn minimum broadband guarantee (25/5). Should be either heavily discounted or abandoned.

      • As soon as i changed plan my internet became awful. The response time is crap, takes ages for messenger calls to start, for my security came to show in my phone, for speed checks to start, smart tv says connecting issues as does phone… seems like the internet is not just 12mbps, looks like a very rough country road with a speed limit. May need to call tpg, or else go back. I bet they do this on purpose with a profile setting and try tell me it's the speed . Speed is fine at 10+ most of the time. And 12Mbps is enough for several hq streams of netflix easily… so it's not the speed. A train may go 200kmph but if you're car accelerated like a train you'd consider it under powered.

Please notify TPG that you want to change provider 30 days in advance. Couple of friends were charged for a month thinking that there is no contract and easy to change NBN provider

    • Can always argue it. I did and got pro rata refund with cancelling on the spot.

      • but it is hard in term of timing, right? if you notify tgp say 20of september then you notify the new provider say 18th but the new provider having issue and cant active on 20th then you will be without internet?

it doesnt make sense with the notice. when new provider bring you in, the old provider should get a notification straight away that this customer is no longer exist something like that?

  • Whatever you change to, make sure you look up the ACCC NBN results to get a more accurate picture of the quality of the service. They are not all created equal, and some have very slow speeds in peak times and lots of interruptions, etc

Time to move, What loyalty?!? What do you get for being loyal? sh!t customer service and price increase? Churning only takes 15 minutes or less, the beauty of NBN makes churning between ISP quick and easy.

  • Thank you so much for the valuable comments. So decided to move from tpg
At the moment I planning to choose this
    https://www.more.com.au/personal/commbank-nbn-plans

It's competitive anyway so I would stick with the $5 increase.

  • AGL have power+nbn bundle savings www.agl.com.au/residential/nbn-plans
    nbn 25/5 $60 with AGL
    nbn 50/20 $65 with AGL

*** you must pick the right plan for you and make sure your not overpaying for power but market or near it rate***

Yep already left them last week. Churned to Superloop on their current 6 month deal. Also didnt have to give 30 days notice so was lucky there. Also trying to get my original $20 pre payment deposit back but not sure if i will have any luck there. Have been wanting to leave them for a while, this was just a good excuse. Think they really want to move people to their own 5g platform to be honest. Was part of the alternative option in the email and also the spiel over the phone. Wasnt interested in the slightest.

    • yeah they called me with the spiel too! even though i have a landline & calls bundle with them…?

  • I moved my TPG to Spintel after 15 years and doubled my speed for the same money before they put it up.

    • What's the speed and cost? Also is that an introductory rate?

      • yeah you can check spintel website its all there, discounted for first 6months

        • I've done that, just making sure it's not a non-published discount of some sort

          • @JimB: I compared online but it's the standard offer. I was on 20mbs with tpg now 50mbs with spintel.
$64.95/mth with $10 discount for 6 mths which is $54 a month tpg was 59.99 going to $64.99.
So the final outcome after 6 months is a better plan for the same price.

TPG changed me a cancellation fee.

  • Give them another call and ask to be transferred to the win back team. For me, they eventually offered to price match a competitors 200mbps plan for 84.99.

  • +1

The NBN proposal to vastly increase their fees were recently rejected, so you can tell TPG to stuff it and churn away
