  • The RT-AX55 is also discounted.

  • Is this worth getting if you have an old Netgear D6220 modem/router?

    • I had netgear 7000P that was just about as incompatible with everything as you could get. I moved to ASUS and I haven't really had any issues since.. even the TP-Link range extender works perfectly fine with my new RT-AX86U.

    • If your D6220 is working fine, the upgrade would probably not be all that meaningful. There's no merlin firmware support for this router either. Also if you need the adsl modem functionality, you'd need to get a new modem in addition to the router, so in that case it would be a definite no imho.

      • ADSL? laughs in FTTP accent

          FTTP? Cries in heavily-congested-during-peak-fixed-wireless… :(

        • Yea I have FTTN… I get good speeds at least. Don't think it is ever under 80mbps and recently changed to Superloop and by far the best ping when playing games.. Well 1 game haha..

@jbird84 - The biggest reason I am looking to change is for more visibility on the network. I like the DumaOS that Netgear routers use, would like a bit more range on my wifi, and not sure how good the D6220 actually manages several wireless devices. Think it's a bit outdated and something newer might handle it better. That said, I can't really pinpoint issues to it but just my gut feeling. I will still use this as my modem so don't need another device, just cut off the wifi on it.

This router supports OpenWRT firmware which is a big plus.

How much better would this be than a Gen 2 Telstra Smart Modem?

  • Thanks OP, just bought one. I hope it's as reliable as my Asus rt-n66u. Been using that thing for nearly a decade now, and it's never missed a beat. Time for an upgrade.

Is this an upgrade from Nighthawk X6 R8000 ?

AiMesh compatible with older Asus routers like RT-AC68U is a big bonus! Cheap way to get mesh full home coverage without getting rid of old router.

    • You sure it works with Aimesh ?

      • Yes. It says so in the specs.

  • Still have an rt-ac68u kicking along. What would be a good router to upgrade to that supports merlin and aimesh?

Ahhhh, just my luck, showing $149 now…

    • That's what the Report > Expired functionality is for.
