  • This would raise your flybuys spend bonus limit though

  • Anyone used these cards before?

    • Yes. What do you want to know about them?

      • How reliable is the provider? I remember reading awful reviews about these cards a while ago, such as people were not able to pay with these cards in store, terrible experience with customer support, etc.

        • +4

Ahhh the reviews… they’re sometimes great fun to read.

My personal experience is that these prepaid gift cards are fine, but you need to be aware of its quirks.

There two versions of the OnlyONE Visa gift cards pictured in this deal:

          1. A version that comes with a PIN on the back of the gift card, but no signature panel. You can tell by looking at the small text on the back of the packaging that says “For in-store purchases, enter the PIN on the back of your card.” (or words to that effect.)

          2. A version that comes with no PIN on the back of the gift card, but there is a signature panel. You can tell by looking at the small text on the back of the packaging that says “For in-store purchases, no PIN is required.” (or words to that effect.)

Version (2) will cause grief for a lot of people, because if you swipe this kind of gift card at most EFTPOS terminals, it will ask for a PIN. A lot of people will become confused, because they won’t realise that signature verification is still possible (and permitted) for these kinds of cards. To proceed with signature verification

          • Swipe the gift card on the EFTPOS terminal
          • Select CR / Credit (if prompted)
          • Press Enter or OK if you are prompted for a PIN, ensuring you do not enter any numbers on the PIN prompt screen. If you are at a Westpac-issued EFTPOS terminal, there should be an option to select Signature verification.

If you are at an in-store merchant that does not accept signature verification, you will not be able to use the card.1

I had a look at the OnlyONE Visa gift cards sold at Kmart a couple of months ago: I think the $100 denomination was version (1), but the $200 was version (2). You’ll need to check stock at your local store to see what they have.

Some online merchants will not accept these prepaid gift cards, because prepaid gift cards are not tied to a verified cardholder and cannot support 3-D Secure, which means the merchant cannot ask the card issuer to verify that the authorised cardholder is the person authorising the transaction. Examples of such merchants include:

          • Special Gift Cards
          • Prezzee
          • Woolworths Group gift card portal
          • Merchants that check whether a card supports 3-D Secure (e.g. Everyday Pay, Reward Gateway)
          • Most streaming services

The awful reviews probably indicate other merchants that probably do not accept them (including PlayStation and Steam), but I have not verified this myself.

If you are finding that an OnlyONE Visa gift card is not working at a specific merchant, a potential workaround is to link the gift card to your PayPal account and checkout using PayPal, ensuring you select the OnlyONE Visa gift card as the paymemt source. This is what I do at Prezzee whenever Prezzee does a deal and I want to use an OnlyONE Visa gift card as a payment method.

Btw, Indue (the card issuer) has blocked the ATO for these gift cards, so do not purchase these gift cards if you are looking to send payments to the ATO.

Keep in mind some other points:

          • I have never had to contact customer service for anything (including chargeback requests), so I have no idea how good (or bad) they can be.

          • I had an in-store refund processed onto a OnlyONE Visa gift card, and it took 5 business days before the funds were available to spend.

          • Some merchant types (e.g. restaurants, hairdressers/barbers, car rental places, hotels) may request an authorisation charge that is up to 20% higher than the transaction value. The difference between the authorisation charge and the final transaction value will be returned to your card’s available balance once the transaction is settled, but this is something to be aware of if (for example) you’re at a hairdresser and are wondering why you cannot pay for a $55 haircut using an OnlyONE Visa gift card with an available balance of $60.

          1. If you are at Woolworths or BIG W and swipe you have the signature-only version of the OnlyONE Visa gift card, swipe it on the EFTPOS terminal and press OK without entering anything on the PIN prompt screen. The checkout will approve the purchase without asking for your actual signature (assuming you have sufficient balance on the card, etc). I suspect the same thing happens at BWS, Dan Murphy’s and EG, as they all use very similar POS systems to Woolworths and BIG W.

@WookieMonster: Thanks a lot for the comprehensive response! Really appreciate it.

  • Can I add these Visa cards into Apple wallet?

    • No.

      • You cannot add these prepaid gift cards to any mobile wallets.
      • You cannot exchange them for a digital version to store on your mobile wallet.
      • Buy a Special Gift Card? I am not sure if it'll work, but Coles Prepaid MC worked.

        • +1

Nope, Special does not accept OnlyONE Visa Green gift cards.

I tried two different OnlyONE Visa Green gift cards a couple of weeks ago and Special returned error messages saying it could not process payment.

Be aware that there is an extra $7.95 fee on $200 cards and $5.95 fee on $100 cards.

    Consider 2000 pts= $10
    you'll get 1050 pts ($5.25) for $105.95 spend and 2070 ($10.35) pts for $207.95 spend
    your real savings are $5.25-$5.95 = -$0.70 for $100 cards and $10.35-$7.95 = $2.40 =1.2% for $200 cards.

There is no fee for some of their category gift cards
But this deal only gives you 5% savings, compare to constant weekly promotions from Coles/WW that gives you 10% savings,

    Very bad deal.

    • Thank you so much for working out the maths.
