I was able to price match StanCash yesterday at JBHiFi: https://www.stancash.com.au/samsung-9-1-4ch-q-series-soundba… down to $884

      Context:
      - Only ever previously owned a soundbase (Sony ht-xt3) with an older 1080p dumb tv
      - Have owned an LG C1 65" and Apple TV 4K for the last year (no extra sound setup)
      - I had been waiting so long to pull the trigger on some extra sound. I was within an inch of buying the Q950A from an OzBargain deal late last year, but I have smalls (kids) and the fabric covers on those things were definitely getting torn or banana hands on them

The difference going from LG C1 TV only speakers to the Q930B is quite the jump. From not having bass or rear/sides to having some is a massive leap. I can't talk to how much the Q930B would contribute to this vs any other setup that has the same attributes. Currently running via e-arc, as the Q930B is more sensitive to my non-certified HDMI cable than the C1 is (5m HDMI cable that the C1 can receive full 4K@60 Dolby Vision no issue, but when plugged into the Q930B it passes through with white speckle dots and noise. Verified it was just the cable by temporarily having the Apple TV right next to the Q930B and replacing the cable with the shortest HDMI cable in my bag-o-tricks).

If anyone has any questions, let me know. I'm less than 24hrs in and still not sure what content I need to go watch/re-watch now I have a room-full-o-sound

      • What's the difference between this and the q950a?

  • +2

No 4K 120HZ passthrough on the HDMI ports only 60HZ :(

(My X90J only has 2 HDMI 2.1 ports and 1 of them is the ARC/eARC port and want only 1 remote)

To my understanding there is only 2 Soundbars that can do this? HT-A7000 and Klipsch Cinema 1200

    • +2

That is correct and at a very different price point

    • +2

The A7000 does not have VRR either so it's a catch 22 really

      • Looks like I might be waiting another year or two before the tech becomes more mainstream. Only thing I don't get is why Sony would make 1 of the only 2 HDMI 2.1 ports ARC and not the other two ports which can still support 4K 60HZ which should be more than enough bandwidth for the Audio only?

I've seen one of the Sonos can grab the Volume keys from the TV remotes IR signal and use it to control volume when using Optical connection which is nice.

        • If your TV has eARC there is no issue and the passthrough is not required.

          • @hessels92: Not sure what you mean,

I am wanting to use 2 devices into my X90J running full 4K 120HZ (PS5 and PC with RTX 3080). I can only plug them into Ports 3 and 4 as they are the only HDMI 2.1 ports.

Port 3 is also the ARC/eARC port. So if I plug a soundbar into that I can't run another 4K 120HZ device.

Port 1 and 2 are HDMI 2.0 and can only do 4K 60HZ.

If I use Optical cable from soundbar I must use that soundbar's remote as TV one won't work.

            • @patrioticpickle: If you have a smart remote like LG, you can use it to set the volume of the soundbar rather than the tv.

            • @patrioticpickle: You just need to connect an HDMI 2.1 Switch to Port 4 - https://www.amazon.com.au/CABLEDECONN-Directional-Converter-… so you can switch both sources into the single port.

But, is there some reason you don't use an AV Receiver ? The normal use case here is to connect your multiple sources to the HDMI ports on the AV Receiver, and that will switch your inputs and drive your speakers - you just need a single HDMI connection to the display.
              Receivers have multiple HDMI inputs…

        • Because most (not all) will prefer to connect such devices directly into the TV and not risk the extra latency \ complexity or just have the option to use without soundbar.

    9.1.4 LOL

    • -1

      Why lol?

      • +7

Presumably the same thing that always comes up with soundbars. They're not really anywhere near the same level as a proper 9.1.4 system, and calling it 9.1.4 is a bit disingenuous at best, because it's 5.1 (center, l/r, l/r surrounds and sub) at a stretch, but really more like 3.1 (center, surrounds, sub) since the separation is quite small.

        • +2

There’s one in every Samsung soundbar OzB post unfortunately.

        • It does a better job in “surrounding “ the sound than my previous 3.1 system. It’s gimmicky and doesn’t come close to the dedicated 5.1.2 but tricks your ears reasonably well.

        • +1

they're also no where near the same price as a proper 9.1.4 system. calling it a 9.1.4 system is not disingenuous as that's how many distinct channels it has.

          • @jztilly: Correct, just the channels aren’t separated in a physical space. It’s like saying I have 9 channels, but they are all in a side tiny box in front of you.

            • -1

@onlinepred: the "tiny box" is 1.2m in length, and the side speakers bounce of walls which are usually far wider than speakers would sit.

I dont understand this argument every time a soundbar deal comes up. If you prefer discrete speakers, go buy discrete speakers. I'd argue that the majority of people who buy soundbars are getting them because they don't want speakers.

              • @jztilly: To be fair, my TV is wider than that.

                • @onlinepred: So are most >50” TVs. Does your tv also have 4 side firing speakers?

                  • +1

@jztilly: I’m not sure what you are getting at? I’m just pointing out the soundbar unit doesn’t even do proper 2.0 without having to fake it. Stereo speakers connected to a tv would normally sit around 30-40cm to the left/right of the edge of the tv. So if your tv was 1.5m, plus let’s say 60cm, that’s 2.1m minimum for the soundbar length to achieve basic physical stereo.

I owned Samsung HW-N950. Had consistent issues with audio dropping out from satellite speakers. Spent many frustrating months trying to get sorted and was told to turn off my home wifi. Eventually I received a refund when I took it to a different service centre. Not sure if Samsung has resolved this in this updated model. I’d be keen to know if others had this experience. I moved to Sonos and Ive had zero audio drop outs.

    • Same issue with my JBL Bar 5.1. I won't buy a soundbar with satellite speakers now.

    • +1

After having a Samsung TV and being messed around by them, I won't buy their products again. Terrible support and QC.

    • I have the Q950A (2021) and have had no issues with drop outs. I think it sounds great for what it is. I have heard that if you do have issues the Samsung after sales support isnt the greatest.

    • I own a HW-N950, no issues with audio dropping from satellite speakers, though surrounds seemed a bit too quiet even with adjustment, had to sit them closer to the viewer, and sub is quiet as well.

I have a shield and xbox which the soundbar passes their signal through to the TV and it often drops the handshake when it switches to an input, or switches between hdr and sdr signals. I have to switch to another input then switch back to hope it connects again. It's especially annoying when the remote has to cycle through every input.
(I have the xml commands to switch to a particular input, which works when put through a browser on windows, but doesn't work using a browser on android.)

But even with it's problems it's good for a soundbar, obviously not on par with physically separated front channels.

  • Does anyone know if the Q930B has the same rear speaker dropout issues as the Q990B. Discussion here about Q990B rear speaker dropout for models made before July 2022" https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/720727
