Is this the only book needed for the full story?
Debatable, most of the “pow” comes from the first book. The second two aren’t bad books but they just aren’t up to the first in terms of striking new ground.
In other words, the first book is a master piece and can be read on its own. The ones that follow just feel like more of the same rather and the novelty has worn off.
Thank you
Thanks OP!
When you read it are you going to imagine Timothée Chalamet or Kyle MacLachlan as Paul?
Alec Newman.
What do people that have read the books think about the recent movie? I've never read any of the books but enjoyed the movie
I liked the movie but the book gives you a better idea on the political background and the various groups. I would recommend reading the books.
It's a computer game
To me the movie was flashy, but felt super rushed in comparison.
It’s a movie. Not a 10 part series.
That's my point. If it were a series it wouldn't feel as rushed?
@InsertCrow: Isn't there some miniseries or something out there? I've always wanted to watch it, but never got around to it.
@BadGiraffe: Apparently so, called Children of Dune. I've not seen it though. I only decided to read the book when I saw the trailer for the movie.
I thought it pretty good. Certainly in comparison to the eighties’ trainwreck ( I took Mrs E to see it on a sort of first date, nearly ended things then and there).
It all hinges on part 2 of course.
It's given you something to argue about for decades.
I find I have learnt to be in total agreement with my wife. Very much so.
I thought the scale and general mood of the film was brilliant but it missed a lot of detail and context (as is common enough). Some of this may be filled in the next part but do read the first book at least, it's brilliant.
book is 10/10 - movie is 10/10
Game is 10/10 (at the time)
I read a little then watched the movie and then finished the book afterwards.
I can understand alot of the creative decisions to omit certain characters as they just seem to die in the book without progressing the plot.
They said, there is alot more detail in the book that makes it more interesting. The thropters seem to be exactly as described in the book.
After finishing it I can't wait to see what they do for second movie. Hopefully the ending isn't as abrupt as the book.
got one, gonna reread after 40yrs , but gonna watch movie first
Buy secondhand????
I buy a few books second hand and while yku can buy the book cheaper like on Abe shipping always makes it nearly as much as new.
I even enquired about bulk ordering to get around this but it was a bit extreme
Agree. Most second hand books are located in the USA and shipping from small sellers is just too dear. Only large companies are able to offer cheaper shipping.
I still own a hard cover version of the first 3 Dune books in a single volume; the final 3 I audiobook listened instead of read.
Have you tried World of Books? I’ve bought from them many times and it’s free shipping always with no minimum spend.
Or borrow from a library?
Then you have time cost of travelling to the library to borrow it, travelling again to return it, and a time limit on reading it before it's overdue. Plus you can't in good conscience read it in the toilet with poo fingers.
Yes, They used to have heaps of these in local second hand book stores but i presume second hand book stores arent really a thing anymore and its all online in which case it can then become expensive depending on shipping.
Cheapest I can see on eBay is $12.64 shipped, from the UK.
Nearly finished this in audio book and kind of feels like Game of thrones in some parts - Super slow - almost political drama but not a lot of action so far.
Would probably be better off as movies (yes i know they are making them) or tv series.
Great world building but its a bit boring tbh. Maybe it will pick up towards the end
Such a good book and essential reading before the movie!
I can’t see $9
$9usd maybe
Excellent! Just the first dune book and not five other fillers in a box set.
