$749 PS5 posts will finally be a "bargain".

    • -2

It won't have any effect for the consumers or Sony.

There's still the issue of availability, so paying $50 extra won't dissuade customers. Meanwhile, Sony won't get affected by inflation as much. Remember, Sony is selling each unit at a loss, then you factor in the cost of the phenomenal DS5 controller, shipping costs, and the marketing budget. It adds up. Weird thing is they've been through it before with the PS2 (Dotcom Bubble) and PS3 (Housing Crash).

      So far sales look like:
      - Xbox Series S (3 Million estimate)
      - PS5 Digital (5 Million estimate)
      - PS5 Disc (18 Millionestimate)
      - Xbox Series X (13 Million estimate)

…which actually looks to be a record, much faster sales than the PS2, Wii, or PS4, and that's before their next-gen and first-party titles drop (2023). So I expect MS to break a personal record (100 Million total sold?), while this could break the record and become the highest sold console of all time for Sony. Where's Nintendo?

      • +1

        Nintendo has the switch?

        111 million units so far

  • +1

Knew that this date would come after the freaking Oculus price hike. I'd better see the PS5 in stock this Xmas on retail shelves and not in scalpers' hands.

    • +15

Now Sony has become the scalper themselves

  • -3

You've gotta hand it to them for constraining supply and keeping demand constant. Weather it is microchip shortage induced or artificially created, it's genius.

    • +2

Nah. Look at MS: XSX has started to have surplus stocks at Costco and preorders are frequent. On the other hands, Sony is definitely not doing good enough job to supply their PS5 to retails to justify the damn price hike. As always it is the consumers getting facked.

      • +5

Or are they doing a good enough job to ensure there's always demand in the market.

        hmmmm

        • +5

Demand they're not meeting and so aren't generating any revenue? Genius! /s

        • +7

Xbox doesn’t suck. It offers a better value system with game pass. console wars are juvenile behaviour.

          • @Griffindinho: I'd say psn deluxe is of similar value, don't see how xbox is better value.

That said the day 1 games on offer for gamepass have been amazing, for me anyways. Already have/played most of the ps library.

        • +5

Dunno but I'm quite enjoying my GPU subscription as I have both a laptop and an XSX. Better value for money for sure.

        • +3

          Xbox is drm'd to hell.

I have an og and a 360, but I'd never buy their current systems

        • +4

Yes that must be why I use Series X 90% of the time and PS5 10% of the time.

      • Yet Sony has sold over 21 million PS5's and about 5 million more units than the Xbox.

        • -1

Hyundai outsells Ferrari too… I'd prefer a Ferrari

    • +10

Nope - they make all their money on game sales and subscriptions. They’d be kicking themselves they can’t make twice as many consoles each month.

      • -6

Works for Rolex though with an artificially controlled market, don't see why it wouldn't work for Sony, never have to discount again.

        • +6

Yes, because a watch is something that people buy add ons for in the same way as a razor or a console /s

          • -2

            @GrueHunter: What's your point?
They're still maintaining full retail costs some 2 years later

            • +5

@Drakesy: as in consoles are not where they make money, it's in the games and subscriptions

              it's like ink for printers

if rolex sold the watch for 100 bucks but sold batteries for 100 bucks that needed changing monthly that's what's it's like

but rolex is a single off product. where ps5 is a product starts people to spend more more more

              • -2

@djones145: But if you could make money of one product would you not maximise that ability?

                • @Drakesy: They don't want to make money on the hardware. They're trying to make the platform as accessible as possible to get as many customers on it.
Most consoles are sold at a loss, to set a low the entry fee to their ecosystem

              • +3

@djones145: Sony said last year they aren't making a loss on PS5 sales https://www.pcmag.com/news/sony-says-499-ps5-no-longer-sells…

And even if a console does make a loss in the beginning, it has to be partly just the R&D cost of manufacturing. Once that is paid off and production of components is refined, each console sold makes a profit. I bet it's the same for almost any product. The first batch of cars off a new assembly line would technically be sold at a loss. The first few months of donuts sold at a bakery that just opened with new ovens and can't afford to buy ingredients in bulk yet would be sold at a "loss". Buy a truck and the first few years of your freelance deliveries are a loss too because you haven't even paid off the truck yet.

    • +5

Lol. They've been playing the long game, hey? Miss out on the money makers like games, accessories, and services for 2 years all so that they can get an extra $50 per unit on the money losing hardware?

  • +7

lol guess I'll be keeping the ol' PS4 PRO for a while longer.

    • +6

For real, don't bother with PS5 until the madness is over. I have one and its a brick. Compared to PS4 pro as a deal its not even close. Wait until slim or pro if you are invested in their ecosystem.

I'm in the position where I have, Steam, 3 years of Gamepass and a Switch; the PS5 is like my platform of last choice now. $125 games are just insane to me but that's the anchor price.

      • But it’s no supreme brick

      • $125 games are just insane to me

Do you have the digital or disc version? I find most physical games are $90-$100 tops but the digital version are a premium because they know some have the digital only versions so you don't have much choice. One of the (major) reasons to avoid the digital only version of the PS5s if you can.

        • Or set up a Turkish PSN account, most brand new games are around $50-60 and on sale things are extremely cheap, I've found them in general to be around a 3rd of the price of games from the Aus PSN store.

  • +3

Nintendo: No Plans to Increase Switch Pricing Despite Component Costs Rising: The handheld console will remain at the same price as demand remains high. https://www.cnet.com/tech/gaming/nintendo-no-plans-to-increa…

    • +2

I suspect the Switch is the only console they make money off the hardware

      • +2

Helps when they're also using older parts. Plus, you can get Switch consoles, even OLEDs at discounted prices from time to time, certainty not the case for PS5.

  • +9

All those people who refused a $40 mark up on a bundled game might be feeling a bit burned right now.

    • +1

And now they'll be paying an extra $90 on top of it all. Just paying it forward back into the economy I guess lol

    • +2

      Bahaha

      Guys guys HODL

  • +1

    Holy moly

  • +2

Sadly, this just summarise how powerful the USD is against the other currencies, Canada, Mexico, China, Japan, Europe and UK alongside Australia will get price increases for PS5.

    • +2

Or its just that the USA is the biggest market for Xbox and Sony doesn't want to push more Americans to team green

  • -1

I don't see the big deal. The original PlayStation 1 was $700 AUD… in 1995 money!!
    That's at least $1400 in today's money…

    • +6

      That's not the best comparison.

Gaming was a lot more obscure in the 90s. Consoles and games were ridiculously expensive.

I remember asking my mum to pay $100 for a copy of Toy Story (Mega Drive) from Big W back in 1997.

Today's PS5 price increase is more an indicator that PS5s are gonna remain hard to come by for quite awhile yet. I've only had my PS5 for a few months now and I still don't think it's reached that 'must have' status yet. Its current library reminds me of the PS3 back in 2009 - nothing really worthwhile to play that isn't a remaster or remake.

      • +1

I remember asking my mum to pay $100 for a copy of Toy Story (Mega Drive) from Big W back in 1997.

even back in the day i like bargains, Big W Miranda was my favourite store to buy $20 Nintendo Entertainment System video games.

      • +1

yeah, every time I've thought "I should get a PS5" I've looked and there is literally no exclusive games that justify me moving from my PS4 PRO

      • Its current library

You mean every Ps4 game ever made, as well as exclusive Ps5 releases?

Hardly a small pool. I admit you can play most games on the older console still, but the faster loading times, better performance, and enhanced UI features make it a no brainier.

  • -4

is there a need for everyone to have a PS5? or indeed any console for around the same money you can get a Pc with expandability better graphics etc again why is there the need for consoles?

    • If you’re going for PC. Just get a XSX. Better value.

    • +1

      Yes. Couch playing.

    • +7

yeah plenty of reasons - for me, I just can’t be bothered with PC gaming anymore. I bought a new machine a few years ago to play some strategy & city building type games that imo need a mouse and keyboard, but that’ll pretty much be the last PC.

Worrying about updating components, fiddling with settings, tweaking what’s already installed, updating drivers, etc - that’s a young man’s game. Most of the time I’m more attracted to the idea of sitting on the couch, turning my tv on, pressing start on my PS5, inserting the disc and then playing said game. Easy.

      • +2

Fair enough! I just feel that a console is lacking titles and price reductions for games etc. and I do more with my PC than just play games. I can understand parents wanting a baby sitting solution where as you said push button play game.

      • +2

The only reason I have a gaming PC is so that I can play Total War and old classics like HOMM3.

      • +1

Also working at a PC means gaming on a PC is very unappealing.

    • +2

      Think of the parents.

The average mother or father is not going to spend $1.5-$2k on a decent gaming pc and then commit to researching, buying and installing better components as time goes on.

As opposed to spending $700+ for a current gen console that you'd simply plug in to your tv and a wall socket.

    • +2

Consoles have always catered to a different market to PC gamers. It's simpler, games will just work and cheaper (at least the upfront cost).
If you're a PC gamer, you do it for the custom-ability of both the hardware and software. But you need to do things like updating drivers, troubleshooting, etc which is much more involved.

    • +2

With consoles getting more powerful, PCs getting more expensive, and devs losing money, the day of PC exclusives are coming to an end.

Plus, when you buy a console, you buy into a gaming ecosystem. Everything is done for you. With a PC, it's always a risky bet if your gazzilion dollar graphics card will even work with a certain game.

      • but we are seeing high prices for a console PLUS for fast storage you must have a very specific fast NVME drive driving the overall cost even higher. while you don't have to worry about drivers and updates I'm running Windows 11 and all my updates are done for me so the furphy about the maintenance of PCs is a bit non existent in MODERN pcs. still haven't heard of a console that you can type letters, do excel etc. on, it will come I guess but not just yet

at least with a PC if my gazilion dollar graphics card doesn't work with a certain game then I never researched the card, reviewed what card did work etc. and unlike consoles I can replace the card if it ever fails can't do that easily with a console it becomes a boat anchor

        • still haven't heard of a console that you can type letters, do excel etc

And I've never seen a hammer that can charge my iPhone. Who cares? Everyone owns a PC for work or basic functions. I don't need that integrated into my gaming console.

        • -1

Why would they make a games console and push features like 'type letters and use excel'?!?!

These are outdated features that most phones can do today. Don't know why you would want to log onto a console to do that.

          And as for -
"unlike consoles I can replace the card if it ever fails can't do that easily with a console it becomes a boat anchor"
          - fortunately you can replace a console just like you can your graphics card, or anything else for that matter.

And also you seem to love to use devices for unintended purposes. - 'boat anchor' not gonna lie it made me giggle and wish this was actually a thing, where bricked consoles were used as anchors or paperweights.

  • +5

Boys, PSVR is going to cost a fortune!

  • Unrelated, but I'm scared as to how much the new Dualsense Edge will be.

The replaceable thumbstick units sound really neat though.

    • +2

      Probably between $250-$300.

      I'll likely get one.

    • Needs a replaceable battery

  • With all the OZAnnouncement posts going on, this should be posted as a deal!

  • +2

Guess I'm not getting a PS5 for another five years at rate things are going. Or skip the entire gen and hop on when the PS6 comes out.

    • +1

If you have PS4 is there really a need to rush off to get one of they still support the new releases.

Maybe worth reconsidering when a redesign comes around (as the size and design doesnt do it for me) or the headset comes out and if there's anything on that's worth playing that can't be done on the oculus

At the moment with the lack of availability, might as well forget about it until there are actual 'deals'

  • +6

Must be the first time I have ever seen the price go up on a console 2 years after release.

    Crazy world.

  • ps5 right now wasn't worth the coin, more so now. maybe when that ps5 headset comes out I might reconsider.
This price increase has made buying a standalone player more appealing to me.

good to know the Xbox wants to be competitive. Sony won't increase it in the US most likely due to that

  • I'll never understand ozbarahainers ability to stick it to the man by denying themselves enjoyment. If you can afford $750 you can afford $800. It's the way of the world right now. Constrained supply and rampant inflation.
My suggestion is to not lose sleep over it and if you want one and can get one, do so and enjoy it.
Same goes for all the hodlrs in GPU world.

    • It's the principal of it. I usually buy five of the $1 hotdogs from Ikea when I go there, but their price went up to $1.50 each! I refused to get any.

Enjoying things is one thing, getting screwed over is another.

  • I paid $600 for the PS5 Disc version at launch. Can't imagine paying 33% more for being 2 years late.

    • +1

This is how it should be. Early adopters getting rewarded.

So sick of modern day games or tech punishing those who are silly enough to buy early. They pay top dollar for the privilege of being beta testers. Then all the bugs get patched out and the price drops, so new customers come along and get a much better product for a lower price.

  • Microsoft has announced they will keep Xbox pricing as it is, so I wouldn't be surprised if Xbox and their Game Pass will slowly outgrow PlayStation in many markets.

  • I'm so glad I moved from PS2 the Xbox 360 and never looked back
