  • Nice price. I just bought one like a week ago at full price though. Anyone had luck getting Amazon Customer Service to refund the difference if the price drops soon after purchase?

    • +3

I tried and it was a pretty difficult experience, they prefer to recommend you return the item and buy a new one at the discounted price. I did manage to get ~$60 in Amazon credit out of it so it's possible

      • +1

Thanks. Sounds like a bit of a pain.

        • +5

Just go for it. If you don't ask you won't get anything back.

I've had to send stuff back and it is wasteful but that's on Amazon.

          • @Caped Baldy: Why is it wasteful? Does the product not get sold again?

            • @p1723: It needs to get shipped back to Amazon and a separate item shipped back or they could refund the difference…

I recently bought a pair of shoes for $98 then they went on sale to $81 in the following week. Contacted Amazon CS for a refund, they said they don't have price guarantee policy but happy to give me a one-off refund. Gift card balance updated straight away. It was a 5 minute process for me (by phone). Alternatively, you can buy a new kindle and return it against the full price order.

10% cashback on Amazon devices @ ShopBack

    • +2

Don't think so - looks like 0% cashback for Kindle devices (at the bottom of the table)

      • You're right. Very strange that they have excluded Kindle - an Amazon device - from cashback for Amazon devices.

Best to go through Cashrewards then.

        Amazon Devices
        7% cashback
Echo, Fire Tablets, Fire TV, Kindle E-readers, Ring Smart Security, Eero Mesh Wi-Fi

  • I was lucky to get it at 30% off the paperwhite, because Amazon sent an email for us to upgrade from an old Kindle 5, plus we got $50 Kindle credit.

  • +2

Good device. I bought the paper white during the Prime Day sale.

  • Thanks OP, was about to pull the trigger but held off until now. Just ordered one from JB using a gift card.

      exactly

If you don't get why one product exists then that product is not for you.

    • +3

It's not the same. It's not as nice to read on and you will keep getting distracted by notifications/news sites/instagram/YouTube etc. I do anyway lol.

    • +14

Lightweight, matte screen, built for purpose.

No distraction, month-long battery, no glare.

Overall a much more pleasant experience.

    • +2

I hate reading on screens. Can't do it. These readers are different though, it really is just like reading off the page.

    • +2

Tablets are ok for occasional reads but they are really hard on the eyes even at high ppi and OLED. Kindles on the other hand a built differently for the sole purpose of reading. It's just like reading on paper.

      • Love being able to read in the sun without any problems with my ereader. Can't do this on a phone or tablet….. Even if I read everyday for a few hours, my ereader lasts a month (at least) on one charge.

  • i bought a used paperwhite 3 for $70 last week. is it worth to upgrade to paperwhite 5? thanks

    • -2

The latest Paperwhite is 11th generation

    • Larger Screen
      + warm frontlight
      Same ppi
      + USB-C

      • Water resistant too, yes?

    • 6.8

I bought one of these in the Prime sale. Only started using it the last week or so (as I wanted to finish my current book). Really glad I got one, I pretty much have unlimited books now and reading off these screens is nothing like a tablet, very easy on the eyes.

Won't take me long to recoup the money from this that I would've spent on paperbacks. Libgen is a very handy website…

  • I bought the Oasis (Wifi 32gb) recently during the Prime Day sale.
I was so looking forward to it, having used many different iPad Minis over the years.

Sent it back after 3 weeks :(

Just didn't like it, well, not enough for the $314 I'd paid anyway.

    • Paperwhite is better!

      • How so, other than cheaper price?

        • Similar size

  • +1

these devices are insane! My paperwhite from 2012 still going strong, battery still lasts for a week of reading ~2 hours a day. I would definitely get the Paperwhite, not the kindle. It'll last way way longer.

    • Larger screen now

  • Genuine question, what value proposition do Kindle Devices have in a world where tablets are similarly sized and priced with a plethora of capabilities which the Kindle doesn't?
I love reading but have always had this question

    • Tablets just run out off batteries and the screen is nothing like the paperwhite to read. I used to think the same, why get another electronic device… plus liked books too much. Then i got a kindle from a friend and was hooked within one book. ….

    • +2

Read the comments above - there is NO comparison.

      • Totally agree.

  • What do we need to do for cashreward claim? I clicked and bought through Cashrewards, is that it?

  • +1

My wife has an Oasis, I have her old (2014?) Kindle and my old 2009 Kindle. All are excellent devices. I still would like an e-ink full tablet one day.

For those wondering why not use a tablet. They're very very different to use. It's like writing on a tablet vs writing on a Remarkable.

To me, a tablet is for videos, drawing and social media, a kindle is for reading, a Remarkable is for writing, a PC is for word processing/spreadsheets (and obviously other things like gaming). At least, that's how I use them all. All CAN do other things but there's a "best option" for everything

  • Is the paperwhite worth the extra?

    • +2

Yes, I upgraded from the PW2 and the larger screen + warm lighting makes reading a lot nicer

      • Thanks I'll put it on the list for cyber Monday

  • I have an old Kobo, is the Kindle Paperwhite worth moving too?
I have a bunch of mobi & epub books.

  • I just jumped onto the chat with Amazon and they offered me a 10% discount on any kindle as it is my first kindle purchase. Worth it to those that are thinking of getting one. Additionally I saw that Kogan / Dick Smith have the Paperwhite for $169 - but i just don't wholly trust them to send you a current model even if they state it

    • How did you get the discount? Did you just ask for it?

      • +1

On the Amazon chat I asked if they could price match Kogan. They have the paperwhite for $165. They said no but offered a 10% discount if it was my first Kindle. So I said yes , I also went through cashback for another 7% off. Amazon had refunded me 10% of the purchase today

  • Would Officeworks pricematch a Kogan presale at all please?
