You joke but the coles home brand 75c lemonade is a god tier mixer

        • +1

I agree (all the home brand lemonades are pretty good) but it's $1 now

    • +3

      Regal Cola

    • +4

Pepsi Max Mango would go better.

      • +1

Try their new flavour pepsi max lemon.

Thanks OP, but looking for the best price to alcohol ratio

  • +3

    absolute steal! thanks

  • +12

    Thanks OP. Ordered a dozen.

  • +37

Only expensive because it's rare, not because it's good.

Buy a bottle of lagavulin and a thousand eneloops.

    • +12

It is good, just not $1,299 good

      • +1

Exactly. Kills me how much hibiki 17 costs now too. Deal is a deal though, cheaper than getting it in Japan at the moment. https://item.rakuten.co.jp/r-concier/10000059/

        • Years ago I bought one at Dan's for $150 and thought I was splurging… Btw, it's that price because it's end of the line

        • +1

I got a bottle of hibiki 17 as a gift from a client. It was a pretty huge gesture - client was a Japanese guy that imported whisky and I did a pretty good job for him - but not $400 tip good!

Was conflicted. More of a lagavulin guy than a hibiki guy so I went to facebook - should I drink it or sell it. A resounding 'drink it'. So I did.

One guy, a mate of mine who sells wine, said keep it for a year and sell it. People laughed at him - whisky doesn't mature in the bottle!

Yeah - but people pay dumb money for bottles of Japanese whisky that are out of production. Last time I checked it was like $1300. It's a lovely whisky but it's not $1300 lovely. Not even close.

          • @krunchymoses: The question is how do you sell it? To my understanding unless u have a liquor license, places likes eBay and gumtree will take down your listing

            • @bowtiehoon: I think there are booze resellers that will facilitate it, or even auction sites. But I like this. It's making me feel infinitely better about drunkenly sipping on a bottle that ended up worth over a thousand bucks :-P

      • Yep, Suntory’s RRP is 32,000 JPY + tax. About 375 AUD. But even the prices in Japan are inflated on this one due to demand.

      • +1

The japanese whiskies I enjoy a lot, but they are nearly all massively overpriced now, basically since they got popular the lack of volume means the prices just aren't worth it

      • Yeah agreed. I had a glass of this at the distillery for 500 yen and that was a steal. But this is just way too much…

    • +1

Sadly that logic doesn't extend to stills, or everyone would be pumping out $100,000 bottles in their garage

    • What's a good Lagavulin to buy? My dad is coming here and I want to give him one. He normally drinks Glenfiddich 15y/o scotch. Hopefully around the same price as well.

      • +5

The cheapest Lagavulin is the 8YO, it’s around the same price as Glenfiddich 15. I would strongly recommend spending more to get the Lagavulin 16 though, it’s far better

      • +2

16 good value for the price

        • +1

Has the 16 gone up in price? I could have sworn that 12 months ago it was $120 and now at Dan's it's $180.

It's good but if you don't like a peated whisky you won't like it.

          • +2

@Nebargains: Holy heck - used to grab this like 2 years back for under 100!

          • @Nebargains: What the heck. Yes it was definitely closer to $100 the last few times I bought.

            • @cainen: No way! I bought one at $130 8 months ago because I was desperate. Was hoping to stock up a couple when it goes under $100 again :(

      • +10

If he normally enjoys Glenfiddich it may be a good idea to get him another Speyside rather than an Islay like Lagavulin. Aberlour 12 is my go-to in that category.

        • Glenfiddich gran reserva 21yo can be picked up from Dan Murphys currently for low 200s if you sign up for membership (free). Its one of the better value 21s imo.

        • I would also suggest a Glendronach 12 or 18 for him.

        • Thanks for the recommendation. I've bought one (on sale at BWS for $95 instead of the usual $110) and man it's smooth, sweet and great overall. I'm more of a bourbon drinker but this Scotch hits the right notes for me.

      • The glenfiddich 18 is delicious imo if he hasn't had it

        • +1

Oh believe me he has tried it. A bit too expensive for him though

      • +2

I'd be careful about buying him a peated Islay malt if his current go to is a speysider. Peated whisky is really an acquired taste with a small but vocal minority of the market (myself included). Unfortunately most people can't stand the stuff.

If you want something interesting that he's far more likely to enjoy, maybe try something thats been finished in sherry cask. I've gifted a few (non peat-heads) bottles of Glendronach, and everyone's been very happy with them so far.

    • +2

lagavulim would be much smokier , so different styles ….. like instead of steak buy chicken …..

      • but lagavulin 16 is the cheapest 16 year old whisky i know off, great value and one of my cupboard stock.

      • Precisely.

      • True, true. I'm just a bit of a lagavulin fan but you can get some pretty reasonable highland bottles for around $120~ and you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference unless you know your whiskies.

        • What's your highland recommendation?

  • +4

    Broden this for sure

  • +2

Rare stuff, but tastes crap, for a $1299 priced. Not worth for drink but for collection.

    • +1

Exactly it is so overrated! People need to stop buying at these sort of prices so they wont think this is normal for them to price at. Swatch/PS5 scalping seems amateur compared to this.

  • +6

That's very expensive urine on the way out , buyers might want to keep that fancy urine in a bottle for display too

    • +5

Surely there must be a secondary market.

      • +1

Just find some health benefits and it'll sell like hot cakes… Or urine..

        • +2

          Urinal cakes?

          • +2

@youknow: Edible biologically distilled aged whiskey urinal cakes…

  • +4

Thanks OP got 10, secret santa sorted for this year.

    • +3

With that $ you can hire a girl dressed in santa for few hours.. just saying…

      • +2

You could probably hire them for a couple weeks with that cash, just saying

        • +2

Couple weeks? No way….. they charge by hours mate. And lettuces are $10 now

  • Anyone know how much a bottle of this was in Japan 5-10 years ago?

    • Around $700 mark 5 years ago

When I visited Japan in 2018 there was pretty much no age statements available. Though did end up picking up at Yamazaki 12 for under $100

      • Yeah I remember getting this back in 2018 and it was around $750. The price for Japanese import whiskey went crazy when covid started

    • +4

It was less than 10,000 yen at one point if I remember correctly. This person did a chart that is probably a good indicator. https://thejapanesebar.com/spirits-whisky-shochu/japanese-wh…

    • It was 18,000–19,000 JPY on Amazon until 2015. See the price history on Keepa and select ‘All’ on the date range for the graph: https://keepa.com/#!product/5-B003848UCU

  • +3

These are like the Nvidia overpriced GPUs

  • +7

I'd want unicorn tears for that price.

    • Your a cheap date :)

  • Fabulous. Thanks for posting this. Just bought a couple of cases.

  • They were good, but collectors all around the world and speculators have pushed it beyond the realm of anything sensible

    • +2

as often happens with items like this …..has to be stored for 18 years and when things become popular supply shortages drive up prices and they need to wait for the batch they made 17 years ago to turn 18 …..not like making gin which you can put on a shelf in a matter of weeks ……

same thing with cognacs …..prices are nuts if it has 40 or 50 year old material in it as they didn’t plan for the dammed 40 years ago ……..armagnac has gone up up also as people look for alternatives to old cognacs ……

it’s a problem with things that need time to be ready for sale and demand .

      • +3

Yes supply & demand, but that's complex with aged whiskey - when it suddenly becomes popular with Foreign buyers.

        Blame Bill Murray's 2003 "Suntory Time" 😉

When these were put in barrels, there was still competitively little demand for their aged whiskey. So little was produced. Some was used to improve NAS whiskey.

Then, supply couldn't keep up with unexpectedly increased demand. Most aged whiskey production ceased in Japan.
For example, from September 2018 the Hibiki 17 will gradually be removed from the core range, and production will stop.
Which caused a spike in prices of available stock.

In 2017, enjoyed NAS Yamazaki for about $40 in rural villages in Japan. Thought that was expensive!

        • Correct! In the early 2000s Japanese whisky began to win whisky awards which put it on the map and started to see demand began to increase.

Then when whisky began to get popular 15 years ago with a younger crowd this began to increase more until it all exploded around 2013-2016 which is when things really went insane with demand. I think it was around 2017/18 where Japanese whiskies more or less stopped doing aged statement whiskies?

These are good whiskies if you like a lighter style of whisky, they were undervalued when they were cheap (cheapest I saw this was for around the $180 mark in Australia) but are no where near what they’re worth now.

  • Wow

    • +1

You should make your beer baron’s brand bathtub equivalent

      • +1

Got any of that beer that has candy floating in it? You know, Skittlebrau?

        • +1

Sure do! It pairs excellently with the snack that’s together at last: nuts and gum

  • +1

This is a fun one as ozb protocol says we must make jokes about buying 10 and how cheap it is but…it actually is a good price for this whisky particularly since they seem to have stock!

Edit - I do agree with others though. Have tried and it's not worth this. I also enjoyed noticing nikka 17 for $899 (on special) and recalling grabbing 3 bottles some 6-8 years ago for $70 each!

    • +1

$250 is my limit for whisky and i feel it’s the sweet spot between quality and price …..

      • I certainly don't disagree with you! Think my most expensive apart from historical hypotheticals like the Nikka is my 15 yr Glendronach! Otherwise just wish Laga was still $60 haha

  • +2

Could buy a Kawazaki motorbike for price of this Yamazaki

    • need less space for the whisky than to park another food delivery motor bike at the share house. ….

  • I had this when it was $300.

    I didn't even like it.

  • I had this at a mate's house,

    I didn't even like it.

  • A deal is a deal. I won't buy it at this price but this is definitely cheap in AU

  • so is this a good investment to put away for a good 10 years or so for a gift for important occasions later on?

    • +2

If you’re buying it as an ‘investment’ with no knowledge about collecting whiskies. Hell No.

Even if you are a collector no and you wouldn’t be asking this question as you’d know the ship has sailed long ago with age statement Japanese whiskies. You’d also know what Japanese whiskies to buy if you’re interested in speculating on price

I’ve been collecting whiskies for close to 20 years. My rule is never buy something you wouldn’t be happy cracking open for a drink.

  • +1

Is this better than Canadian Club ?

    • better than canadian club we get in australia ……they have bigger range of canadian club in usa and canada , that we never see.

  • +2

Actually taste great with a side of recession and gloomy times

  • +1

That's like 290 eneloop batteries ozbargainers. Be mindful

  • +1

How does this go deglazing pans?

  • Sorry guys tried this and the yamazaki 12 bitterly disappointed ! Yamazaki 12 literally dont even have the body of aberlour 12 which is fifth of the price. Japanese less easily available but far from good. Wont get sucked in the hype sorry

  • +1

I got a hibiki 17 and hibiki 21 years ago for around $120 and $220 going to sell to a sucker i mean collector many years down the line.

  • +1

We're evolving as a species. Not a single "thanks OP, bought 10" to be seen (yet)

  • +3

if you visit the yamazaki distillery you can taste it for ¥600, 25 year old ¥2900

    https://imgur.com/a/c8e1SE7

  • 2-3 times better than Macallan 18 ?

  • I'll go back to drinking petrol, oh wait, that's gone up in price as well…

  • +1

If I sold my liver I could afford this, but then I wouldn't be able to enjoy it.
