Surely this deserves 16gb of RAM?

    • +23

It sure does! Put an 8gb stick on it

      • +14

I actually prefer this setup because it's cheaper to get dual channel (only need to buy 8GB rather than 16GB) and 16GB is the sweet spot for a laptop.

    • +4

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/719329

      Ozbargain has you covered!

Can confirm they are compatible(OEM sticks are crucial). Very worthy upgrade.

        • +5

It needs XMP support by the motherboard to get the advertised speeds otherwise it runs at the default DDR4 speeds. Not sure if the Nitro 5 supports XMP but I would say it doesn't (happy to be corrected though). If it doesn't you can get a kit that does not need XMP to get good speeds like this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/Timetec-PC4-25600-Unbuffered-Compa…

I personally use the Timetec kit and it works great. Dual rank too.

          • +2

            @Yuri Lowell: Cheers Yuri.
I think you are correct, nitro does not support xmp, based on this article

            • +4

@11CENTS: It's better to get non-XMP memory anyway because it's guaranteed to work whereas XMP can be a bit of a crapshoot. The kit I linked is great because it's dual ranked or you can just grab single rank 8GB 3200 stick from crucial for about 40 bucks and it'll run dual channel.

              • @Yuri Lowell: Hi. Is there any reason we can't add a 16GB memory stick to make it 24GB?

      • +6

Would you say it's a crucial upgrade for this laptop?

        • +6

It's a must if you want the full performance of the CPU.

          • +5

@Yuri Lowell: I was trying to make a joke about Crucial ram. But I agree, it's pretty much a must.

      • +3

I used the below in mine.

        HyperX HX432S20IBK2/32 Kingston Technology Impact 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 CL15 260-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory Black 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB)

( originally bought crucial but it didnt work - the memory may be faulty though as that is listed as compatible)

        Crucial RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL22 (or 2933MHz or 2666MHz) Laptop Memory CT2K16G4SFRA32A

    • +2

Yep, a ram upgrade was the first thing I did.

Laptop also allows for additional HDD's, which is nice.

  • +8

How did hardly normal get the monopoly on cheap decent gaming laptops from acer.

Surely this demographic is the complete polar opposite of who you'd expect to go there. It's not likey they'll get repeat business out of it.

    • -6

I guess because not many retailer want to touch that crap.

    • +3

They probably target non technical parents buying for kids

      • +4

True, however my non technical sister in law just bought my nephew a desktop with roughly these specs from Harvey, for over 2k. Smh.

        • Oh God noo… She shud have looked at luketechfast deals..

    • +1

I paid extra for mine when a few sales ago just to avoid HN

    • +1

i think its more so that this product is being cleared, 8gb ram and last gen CPU with a 95w GPU.

      • This is 100% correct. Pretty much nearly all other models of laptop with a RTX 3060 that are readily available to the Australian market, have a higher powered RTX 3060 GPU (130w I believe is the maximum, if I'm not mistaken but there are also 115w chips used as well). You'll see a decent performance difference between the 95w to 130w models.

Welcome to the review thread ;)

bought this last month and already lost $200 :P

    • I have this laptop, and agree with the review, the speakers are terrible, but I use wireless headphones anyway

  • +8

Awesome and/or normalised price. I paid somewhere between $1100-1200 with NIB member benefits Harvey Norman discount in November and for those interested here is how it has been since:

    • I use it only as a desktop replacement, HDMI to a ultrawide monitor with hundreds of unplug/replug of cables with another work laptop and no issues with sockets feeling loose over time

    • upgrading was easier than other laptop manufacturer models I have done in the past with the RAM and M2 slot easily accessible after popping the bottom case

    • overall build quality is not as tough feeling as say a Dell 5420 work laptop, I would not be comfortable with throwing it in my bag without some cover protection (unlike the Dell that I thrown in and out every other work day)

    • only one blue screen / Windows recovery incident and this was likely due to a recent major Windows update hiccup (it has had several before and since without issue), unable to perform recovery yet when attempting a full reimage the Windows update went through and after choosing language it went back to the normal desktop with no loss of data

    • runs the more recent Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, etc fine and I use a laptop cooler pad with fan to keep things cool and quiet

There are other better build 3060 laptops for a little bit more but for this budget price I would definitely purchase it again so long as it was with discounts such as NIB above as a desktop replacement for the casual gamer. It is worth the $100 over the 1650 model. It would be nicer if it was a 12th gen for the same price and I would not be surprised if it reached $1K mark later this year during other sale events.

    • Iv been looking… Any 3070 laptop is 2000$ or above
      Any awesome 3070 deals suggestions?

  • This or Intel NUC M15 EVO 15.6in FHD Touch i7-1165G7 512GB SSD 16GB RAM W11H Laptop - Black (BBC710BCUXBC1)?

    • +12

      this has the graphics card

    • +2

depends whether u prefer to have the touchscreen or the dedicated graphics card

      • +1

Pull the lever and huang297, Thank you very much.
I know one has graphics card , one not.
But I think 3060 can't play AAA game very well.
For old people, which one is better?

        • +3

3060 is more than enough for AAA gaming at FHD

        • +1

          What about old people gamers?

          • +1

@ihfree: I played Quake 2 RTX on this, might be an old people game.

        • +1

as others have said, the 3060 is perfectly capable to run current games on high settings.

the only upgrade i would recommend if going for the nitro 5 is another stick of 8gb sodimm ram to run alongside the pre-existing ram.

if you do game, the nitro 5 will have a much easier time running it.

        • 3060 is plenty when you turn off useless graphical settings. i get around 90-120fps in games like far cry 5 and 6, ac valhalla, etc at 1080p with the right settings. It's good for a portable gaming machine for this price.

plus it also depends on what you're doing. nvidia gpus can be used for a lot of video editing and image editing tasks as well.

        • 3060 is fine on 1080p screens on pretty high settings on modern games, it just boils down to if your fussy about having Ray-tracing & DLSS amped up (then you are looking at the higher TDP 3070/3080 models that are double/triple the price of this notebook).

          • @giordan0: I hvnt been able to spot any 3070 laptop around 1500 mark… Min is over 2000$.

            • @alishaikh: Yeah around 2.2-2.4 for a decent 3070 notebook like Legion 5 Pro (unless Alienware does a flash sale they had a M15/3070 for 1.8 which sold quickly).

    • What are you planning to do on the laptop?

  • +8

Mine has been sent back twice in 13 months for repair, both times having the motherboard replaced. Customer service (and warranty) have been good to deal with, but, I'm not expecting it to last much more than another 6 months now. It is definitely a good overall product, felt like it was decent price for performance, and decent build quality. However, disappointed with it overall given the fact it has died twice.

    • +4

what were the symptoms before motherboard replacement ? not booting at all or just some issues.

      • +2

First time, Bluetooth stopped working and wouldn't connect to any devices. After a couple of attempts at drivers/restore, it eventually just black screened and wouldn't start up at all.

Second time, couldn't connect my external monitor … Device manager listed the video card as being in error. Few driver attempts (nvidia - older and newer drivers) and a factory restore, followed by drivers again - device manager would start up with card listed, but then just drop it. It then just started BSODing. Couldn't even then factory restore, it refused to initiate.

(mine was the slightly older model obviously, the 10300 one)

        • Thanks for the heads up, do you have the 11400H + RTX 3060 Nitro 5?
I feel first time could be a bad wifi card and second time might be bad soldering on GPU (heat issue ?), solution would be GPU reballing, not an easy task.

          • +3

@bazingaa: Yeah, sorry, should have clarified in my first post. Mine was the Nitro 5 with 3060 and 10300H.

And, yeah, could have just been two unfortunate lemon instances. GPU was definitely a factor for the second. I'm not totally clear on what the 'motherboard replacement' actually replaced overall, it was only a brief note from the tech as to what was done and included on return.

Again, warranty and service was good. Contacted support, got given a return postage paid ticket, and just had to box it and return it. Second time it was at the 13 month mark and technically out of warranty, but, they honoured and covered it.

As far as the unit itself, happy with it. It's not top of the line, and corners have been cut, but overall build and design is good. Have it hooked to an external monitor and a KVM, and switch between it and a desktop. For daily use and a bit of gaming, its quite decent.

    • -2

Why would a company give back money that they aren't legally required to? Companies are machines designed to generate profit. The problem is with the government that gave our money away.

  • -1

FYI yes the RTX 3060 in this laptop has a low TGP of 90W but i have had success in flashing a 130W MSI RTX 3060 Laptop VBIOS on this laptop enabling some extra performance!
No i will not show you how to do it, look it up on reddit.
And no i don't own the laptop anymore.

    • I did the same, found in a previous thread. Details are on the review thread (links above)

    • How were the temps after unlocking it?

      • +3

From my rusty memory I believe only 3-5 degrees higher, GPU was in the 80s in temps I think so under control. The CPU likes to run in the 90 degrees region frequently while gaming.

  • Had the previous 10300 model and its been fine
Screen isn't great vs others but it's passable and a decent gamer with external screen

  • Anyone ran FH5 with decent settings? Does it run smooth?

    • On my 5800H/3060 90W using benchmark:

      1080p Ultra settings: 70fps
      1080p High settings: 90fps

Runs about 20fps higher than those in game though. I'm running a mix of high/ultra and getting about 100-120fps.

      • Thanks. I've got an Alienware 17 with a GTX1080. Might not be worth the upgrade yet.

  • +1

I bought this in a recent deal and love it! Added in another 8gb ram stick and another ssd and it's a great gaming laptop. Great price!

    • How do you add extra ssd and ram? Is it just unscrew the back then connect them?

      • +3

yes 11 screws, then can remove the back easily

        • +1

          Thank you kind sir/ma'am

        • +3

You will need a flathead screwdriver or similar plastic shimmy to pop the case open after the screws are off.

    • Did you have to match the 8gb ram you bought with the same speed and brand that's already installed or did you just grab anything?

    • Which Ram brand did you purchase if you don’t mind me asking? Bit of a noon when it comes to PC and laptop due to being iSheep for the past 7 years?

  • I got this from the last Nov deal I think. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB and it's been running pretty much 24/7 and going strong.

    • Did you end up buying an extra 8gb stick or did you buy a 16gb as a kit and get rid of the original one?

      • +1

I bought the 16 kit and got rid of the 8gb one

        • Thanks mate which one did you get?

          • +1

@Mdjz76: Apologise, just checked anazon and I actually got the 16x1 Crucial DDR4 (I think I was planning to add another 16gb down the road) but it's been running flawlessly with just 1x16gb
            Crucial 16GB DDR4 3200 MT/s (PC4-25600) SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFRA32A https://amzn.asia/d/drxHf87

            • @wayne7190: Thanks mate, I've been wondering if it's better to get 1x16gb or 2x8gb. I'll just do a single 16gb I reckon

              • +1

@Mdjz76: If you plan to stay at 16gb, get 2x8 for better performance

  • +1

Had mine for a few months, awesome bit of gear and incredible bang for buck. Put 32gb ram in there for photo processing, and it rips along. Have a spare 8gb stick here I should offload to someone, speaking of such things.

Diablo 3 goes hard on it, lol

    • Hey mate I’m happy to take the 8GB off your hand if you still have it. Inbox me? Thanks.

    • +1

Yeah, same here. I have been waiting for the right laptop with the right config at the right price. 4 years & still going

  • Good for mining at 42-43mh/s Eth too ;)

  • No mention of a HDMI port in the specs at Harvey Norman site, even though the images appear to show HDMI. I wonder what standard it is if it does have one?

    Also, does this have thunderbolt? The connectivity specs say 1x USB 3.2 (Gen 2), 1x USB 3.2 (Type C, Gen 2), 2x USB3.2 Gen 1, RJ45

Is one of the USB ports used for charging or does it have an older dedicated charging port? Can't quite tell from the pictures and I'm not sure if I trust the images anyway. Edit: Looking again at the rear photo of the laptop there appears to be a dedicated round pin style charging port on the back of the machine.

    • No thunderbolt

  • would this be ok to play, say, Witcher 3 at highest spec?

    • +1

      yep, easily.

  • Best bang for buck gaming laptop out there.

  • 8GB with an RTX3060 is like putting a Ferrari engine in a ride on lawn mower… WHY??!!

    • +1

there are two SO-DIMM slots, i.e can be upgraded with 2 * 16 GB RAM = 32 GB

    • +1

It's more like buying a car with 3 wheels and you just have to go and buy an extra wheel

      • You can technically drive it on 3 wheels, so the seller did nothing wrong!

        • I was implying it was known beforehand

  • Can anyone confirm which brand of ram is in this unit, the screen specs in terms of which panel it is and the battery size? I’ve heard that you should avoid the AU Optronics 144Hz screen.
