If I got this for my dad then told him the price, he'd slap me back to fiji then call and tell me I could have got the same thing for $10

    • +4

Not much of a coffee guy eh?

      • I am my dads like Americans, don't care for quality just the caffeine hit

        • Well…at least you get off cheaply!

        • +1

needed a few takes to get through that first bit. 'i am my dads'… well i'd hope so

    • +3

but the description on the website says it has a "spectacular price point", sounds like they weren't joking.

      • +5

Meh. Half decent grinders are expensive. I don't really think this thing should be priced up at the $1k they seem to be selling for atm, but I guess this is a solid deal (for these times). Saves you the trouble of aligning the burrs yourself at least.

Check out the Lagom P64 or Niche Zero (not even flat, but conical burrs) if you think this price is 'spectacular'.

I do wonder how well something like the Eureka Mignon Manual would compare to this though, even with a smaller burr set (and will it take a bellows).

        • +4

Even the Lagom and Niche are still not even in the deep end (price wise) compared to grinders like the Monolith Flat Max, Weber EG-1 etc. There's certainly a deep rabbit hole if you have deep enough pockets to match in the espresso world!

        • +2

A friend went from a Mignon Specialita to the DF64 and thinks it is a huge step in the right direction. He had no bellows though

I am tempted to go from my Specialita with bellows and angled base to this.

          • @PCHammond: Thanks for the info!

          • @PCHammond: .. Damn it. In all seriousness i've found my Specialita to be a great buy, particularly at ~500AUD from Espresso Coffee Shop, but I was also considering spending a bit more for the DF64. Seems like a great bit of kit.

      • More like “slaptacular” price point.

    • if my son bought me this i’d reduce his allowance ……

  • +1

    That's expensive DLC!

  • +2

Would love to know how this is worth 3x the Breville Smart Grinder Pro which also dispenses a single dose…..

    • +5

I am no expert, but a number of online reviews say Smart grinder pro is borderline acceptable for espresso.

I guess if you're looking for more control at finer grind sizes then you'd need this.

That said a top of the range hand grinder would be cheaper.

      • +11

The BSG is fine for espresso, but it isn't very good for single dose grinding as it has high retention. It also produces very clumpy grinds, so use of a WDT tool is essential for consistent extraction.

    • -3

love my breville smart grinder …great value when $200 or less …..not sure why people are having so much trouble grinding coffee …. when the local. cafe is making coffee and there is a line of people he isn’t weighing up single doses …..

have noticed with the breville if i change coffee brands i have to adjust the dial settings but now have them written down …..

      • +2

Cafe doesn’t need single dose…they’re making thousands of them. Probably getting consistent input simply because of the volume they’re processing. Any retention in the grinder is going to be sitting there for a minute or two, hardly enough time to get sticky or go stale.

Me, I make one a day…maybe two. If I was to use a commercial grinder I’m probably going to get a couple of grams out of the previous days grind in each shot…blegh. Also I wouldn’t really want to leave my beans sitting in the hopper for very long (they don’t seem too airtight to me), so I’d probably be portioning them out anyway. This is why single dose is attractive - I don’t need a timer or hopper, and I’m interested in minimal retention designs.

As it is, I use a very decent hand grinder. Sometimes I wouldn’t mind not using my arm to do the work. I’d be disappointed if a machine couldn’t do as good a job as my hand grinder though, so I’ve been holding off (well that, and the $$$). I’m pretty sure my hand grinder gives me finer adjustment and perhaps a more consistent grind than a smart grinder pro (just going off what I’ve heard from some others - I’ve not tried it myself).

  • +2

Even as a coffee drinker I find this expensive - plus a quick google and I can find it for AU $799 and about US $400 if I import.

    • +4

Tbf the burr upgrade is worth at least $100. Expensive is relative, you can spend $1000s on a grinder. It's a case of diminishing returns as you pay more though. If you drink milk based coffees it'd be hard to taste the difference.

      • +1

Burr upgrade with alignment is $200. This is purely to cover to extra cost of the burr and the labour involved in installing and aligning the burr.

      • wouldn't you wait till the burr is a few years old/shagged?
Pretty average if you have to upgrade everything already if brand new, given the cost of these..
My EM0480 hasn't missed a beat and is fine ever since the initial washer upgrade to go finer.

        • +1

Some people like to upgrade the burrs for whatever reason they have. The standard titanium burrs are perfectly fine out of the box for years of grinding. Similarly some people upgrade their burrs to SSP burrs at a cost of up to $500 because they want to. Is it needed? Most likely not.

    • +1

USD 400 +USD 50 shipping charges which would be $640 ish may be. For extra $180 you will get DLC Burr upgrade, australian power plug, Aus warranty, Indicator ring (~$10) , catch cup riser (~$10) and 250gm of coffee(~$10). I was crunching my numbers whether to get it from outside Aus but i dont know whether i want to take chances regarding warranty for an expensive item. This deal is not bad.

  • Hi is this SSP burrs set? Can you upgrade it to the ssp if it isn't? Thx

    • Not SSPs for this price point but you can put 64mm SSPs in the DF64

  • Is this a bargain? I think this is retail price since you can buy it from DF64 website for similar price

    • DF64 website does not come with Australian warranty, appliance certification or power cable.

      • Hi OP,
By Australian certification do you mean SAA certification? Thanks

  • Missing decimal point reported.

  • Serious question, what extra can this do compared to smart grinder pro?

    • +1

I think it's stepless, whereas the SGP is stepped, so this one you are able to adjust the grind to exactly the level you want.

      • -1

the changes between the steps in the breville are small and it’s actually steps on the display more than the dial mechanism not sure i’d need inbetween steps …..

      • The SGP is stepless, it can be adjusted between the steps registered on the screen and doesn’t click into place. I have marked out the steps and half steps on my dial so I can track it with greater precision.

Retention on SGP is pretty bad, even using a single dose hopper with bellows. After doing a vacuum deep clean it has eaten up multiple grams.

    • +1

More consistent grinding with less clumping and less retention. Larger flat burrs tend to give a different flavour profile. Good for medium to light roasted coffee.

A lot of people like single dose grinders for their workflows as well. Seems annoying to me - I prefer a hopper :D

      • This is definitely one of the more clumping and static prone grinders.

      • love the hopper on my grinder …..easier for making cup of coffee between video meetings ….

      • We will have a hopper for the DF64 available as an option in the next month or so.

  • bagin

    • Doesn't have the burr upgrade or alignment

    • DLC Burrs for extra $15 is the deal here along with 250gm coffee beans.

  • Dammit G64 is coming out

Btw how can one be sure they actually align the grinder?

  • I have the DF64 with DLC burrs which I bought in December - haven't tried any other burrs but very happy with the coffee I've had this year.
Having the burrs aligned sounds like a great option.
My first espresso grinder was the Breville smart grinder pro, which I still have for when I'm travelling.
The ground coffee from the DF64 looks completely different in the PF - clump free and fluffy the SGP has large clumps in the output.
The SGP is much tidier and easier to use however, with a better PF holder and auto start by putting the PF into the holder.
As great as the coffee is, the DF64 gives you more to clean up. It has static around the output (lessened a little by the DLC) which can be reduced with RDT, but can make a much bigger mess of your work area than the SGP.

    • +3

You take a 3kg grinder with you when travelling?

      • don’t forget the coffee machine when travelling , no point just grinding coffee ……

      • Yeah the SGP is a bit bulky.
When travelling by car, my travel kit is Breville SGP, Dedica EC685, scales, tamper, beans, jug all in a plastic tub which I keep together.
If flying I will take the picopresso, scales and a hand grinder.

        • EC685 doesn't benefit from taking the DF64 instead of the SGP? (Assume you are using a non-pressurised pf)

          • @caprimulgus: I have modified the Dedica with the silvia steam wand, and use it with a bottomless PF and unpressurised basket.
It does make better coffee with the DF64, but it is significantly more bulky and heavier, and don't want to risk moving it as much.
The SGP hopper comes off easily, it is lighter and smaller, and I am not as worried if something happened to it.

    • What makes the DF64 much messier? Do you grind into the portafilter or dosing cup?

      • I had been grinding into the PF with a dosing funnel to catch most of it. (this funnel wont work with the dosing cup)
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07QG6YFP9 (but the black version when it was ~17 or so)

The distance from the chute exit to the cup or PF meant when using the bellows, fine particles make it past and end up everywhere.
RDT (a tiny amount of water with the beans) fixes this somewhat, but there is still some escaped grounds on the counter.
3d printing an adapter to hold the dosing cup higher has fixed this for me.

James Hoffman's review. Tldr: He prefers the Niche Zero.

    • +1

To be fair James Hoffman reviewed the first version of the DF64. It has come a long way since then.

      • What has changed, and what version is it up to now?

        • +1

          The changes include:

New font on the dial indicator (original font really bothered James Hoffman)
          Revised de-clumper
          Metal indicator ring now included
          Dosing cup adapter now included

We are up to version 3 at the moment.

  • Newer version is coming, https://youtu.be/Uqv5-_7Usz4

    • Not quite. The DF64P is just for espresso where as the DF64 is capable for espresso through to pour over. Having both on the counter my daily go to is still the DF64.

The DF64P still needs to undergo Australian electrical appliance certification so I would be guessing it won't hit the consumer market in Australia until end of the year or early next year.

Also pricing is yet to be finalised on the DF64P but it will likely be priced higher that the DF64.

    • Looks good, talking purely visual. Be interesting to see how it actually performs. And what it costs… ;)

      • +1

Performance for espresso is similar to the DF64. DF64P will come standard with DLC burrs. The drawbacks with the DF64P is that it will only grind for espresso and burr alignment is A LOT more complex than the DF64. Personally the original is still my preferred due to its versatility.

  • DF64 are meant to be awesome, costs more than my machine :P.

    • +1

My grinder costs over 3x my machine! :P

    • Not uncommon for a grinder to cost more than the machine. Usually you will find a higher end grinder will out live your coffee machine when well looked after. With the DLC burrs you would likely never need to replace them in a domestic environment as they have a grinding life of 2000 - 5000 kg depending what coffee you are grinding and for which brew method.

  • I replaced a broken baratza sette with one of these about a year ago. The taste of my coffee improved significantly.

    • +1

Glad to hear that the DF64 was a significant improvement for you. It is a great grinder and punches above its weight.

  • +1

This is perfect timing, we had decided to order one on the weekend and I didn't sit down and actually do it. My wife just said "go do it now" so I had one final check of ozb before ordering and BOOM, this deal for the upgraded burrs at an extra $5 over the same model on ab with standard burrs.
    Pretty stoked!

    • +3

Thanks for your order. We will be sending it out to you today.

      • +1

Great, we bought the machine and had some pre-ground coffee but ran out of that, so now I'm back to the aero press and the mrs is finishing off the last of the pods from the old pod machine whilst we await a grinder arrival :D

        Cheers

  • This is commercial grinder territory. https://coffeemachinesolutions.com.au/commercial-grinders/

  • +1

My 2c - prefer this over the niche zero which I owned prior to trying the DF64. Found consistency of shots to be better on the DF64 and the flavours more complex for espresso and milk beverages. Not to mention that for filter brews, the DF64 by far outperforms the niche which often produced a lot of fines and muddier tasting results.

    • +1

We have similar thoughts however we have a little bit of a bias :)

  • Could we pay for an SSP upgrade?

    • At this stage we do not have SSP burrs in stock however it is something we will be offering in the next month or so.

      • Please consider running an introductory discount deal on DF64 with SSP upgrade! :)

      • Shoot, second question then…could we pay in advance? (pre-order) hahaha

        • +1

Sure, but we don't have a firm time as to when the SSP burrs will be arriving. We suspect at some point in September. If you like just place an order for a grinder and leave a note not to ship until SSP burrs arrive. Also detail which SSP burrs you are after (multi purpose, high uniformity or sweet lab)

      • I am also interested with the SSP burr set.

  • I just ordered a DF64E (with electronic dosing) from another company. Now thinking about getting some SSP burrs…

    • Where did you order from? How much it cost all up?

    • We will be selling the DF64E after we have extensively tested it and obtained Australian appliance certification. Prototype testing has been good but still some areas that need to be improved.

  • I've been thinking about purchasing the Eureka Mignon single dose Espresso grinder for a while now, does anyone know how this would compare?
Its about this price delivered from these guys
    https://www.espressocoffeeshop.com/en/single-dose-grinders/3…

  • Can vouch for Frankie's Beans, just recently received my DF64 with the DLC upgrade. Great communication, service, and brewing tips from the owner himself. Oh, and the DF64 shits all over my previous grinder.

    • Thanks for the feedback and glad to see the DF64 is performing to your expectations. It is a great grinder.
