  • Is there a limit of how many?

    • +1

      Link says limit 5.

  • -1

don't think you get standard points by buying gift cards…

    • +3

      Did last time

    • +7

I did when I bought a third-party gift card at Coles earlier this week. The gift cards in this deal is are third-party gift cards, so you should earn standard Flybuys points.

You do not earn any standard points at Woolworths or BIG W or other businesses accepting Everyday Rewards and selling gift cards.

    • You get the points.

And be careful. It will stuff up your points collection algorithm and make flybuys up your weekly spend, so your points challenges get jacked too.

      • There may have been a change to the algorithm, as quite a few users are reporting no change/increase to spend requirements.

      • Won’t stuff it out from personal observation. Did $5k+ last time and the next Coles deal was a spend $70 x 4 weeks offer.

        • So was this lower or higher than usual?

  • +2

People seem to report during the last gift cards deal that this didn't affect their weekly fly buys spend amounts to get x points back, so maybe Coles have fixed the algorithm so gift cards no longer ruin your targeted spend limits.

    • +2

Id probably have a burner flybuys card just in case depending how important your weekly spends are to you

      • Hi do the temp flybuys cards need to be registered for points to accrue? Advise appreciated.

        • Don't think so but you do need to register it and get an actual card to be able to use Flybuys Dollars.

    • +1

I can confirm that my weekly flybuys offers definitely wasn't affected. In fact I have received $30 spend for 1200 points for a few times. I normally shop at WWS, but I did buy a few $250 gift cards and scanned my flybuys card during the 10% off offer in June.

      • I did receive 1200 points for $30 spend a few times too, but now it's 1000 points for $50 spend :\

        • Ooohh that's brutal. I am still getting 1200 for a $30 offer but who knows what next week will bring. Shame the Woolies offers are so poor in comparison.

    • +3

Mine got affected. Got bumped to $370 required spend for bonus challenges.

    • +1

Mine definitely got affected. I was getting offers for bonus points $20/$50 shops.
I only went to Coles for these prepaid mastercards, and it went up to $120.
I haven't shopped at all in Coles, besides the online shopping to get the 6000 bonus points, and bonus offers are still asking minimum spend of $80, so I won't shop there unless it drops again.

  • -4

Is it only 1 lot of 2000 points per flybuys account ?

    • +3

      Click link and read

  • Do these mc have any limitations?
Got a new cc to rack up some spend on, and also have a rates bill due (which isn't eligible for cc min spend) and wondering if these will work.

    • +3

      Work fine paying rates

      • Origin is doing surcharge for Mastercard now. Shame!

        • +1

I know EA has 0.36% fee so it is still better to use it (5+% disc) than other payment methods.

    • The banks say govt spend does not count but every CC I have had Council and Water rates did. Westpac, NAB, ANZ and AMEX.

  • I guess not a state specific deal ?

  • +7

Don’t forget for an extra 5% cashback via Hiver :)

    • +2

Wow, didn't know that one, had to google it, another account to open, thanks, no more hunting for Woolworths or Coles gift cards, can go to Aldi too.

Oh wait, $250 max per year, that's $5000 per year spend only. Hmm, ok, load the card up maybe $500 each time to keep track.

      https://hiver.bank/products/everyday/

6 Hiver members will earn 5% cash back for every dollar spent using their Hiver Visa Debit card (less refunds and excluding cash advances, cash withdrawals, other cash-related transactions, interest charges, fees, credit or debit adjustments) on the following categories: Grocery purchases (classified by Visa's 'Merchant Category Code' as 'grocery stores and supermarkets' MCC 5411; 'Freezer and Locker Meat Provisioners' - MCC 5422; 'Candy, Nut and Confectionery Stores' - MCC 5441; 'Dairy Products Stores' - MCC 5451; 'Bakeries' - MCC 5462; 'Miscellaneous Food Stores - Convenience Stores and Specialty Markets' - MCC 5499), Public transport (classified by Visa's 'Merchant Category Code' as 'commuter transport and ferries' - MCC 4111; 'passenger railways' - MCC 4112; 'bus lines' - MCC 4131), Bills (classified by Visa's 'Merchant Category Code' as 'Telecommunication Services' - MCC 4814; 'Utilities' - MCC 4900), Uniforms (classified by Visa's 'Merchant Category Code' as 'Uniforms, Commercial Clothing' - MCC 5137; 'Commercial Footwear' - MCC 5139) when purchases are made using mobile wallets (Apple pay, Samsung pay, Google pay), online and Paywave in-store up to a maximum of $250 per calendar year. Cash back will be deposited into the member’s Everyday account in the first five business days of a new month. This offer may be withdrawn or changed without notice.

      • Thanks ! Didn't know about Hiver until I've read your post @bargainsgrabber.

Question. Does buying a pre-pard Mastercard at Coles fall under the various categories that Hiver pays the 5% cashback on ?

        • Yes, that's why he said don't forget the extra 5%.

    • Is there any credit checks?

      • +2

        It’s a bank, not a cc. I didn’t neg.

        • All good. Whoever Neg’d id like a response to this condition during Sign up…

“I confirm that I am authorised to provide the personal details presented and I consent to my information being disclosed to a credit reporting body and relevant government record issuers and record holders for the purpose of confirming my identity.”

          • +1

@TomGum: It says there clearly to confirm your identity. Not to check your credit history or score

            • @F1Maniac: Oh I see. So I guess even thought it’s a check with the credit agency, there are different type of checks. - gotcha!!

    • Yeah only if you're an essential worker though. Not everyone can sign up to Hiver so you probably should preface that.

      • +2

The eligibility criteria is actually broader than just essential workers, and I’ve extracted the following directly from the Hiver website :

Our Hive is open to essential workers who make our communities a better place for everyone else. To join you must be an Australian citizen and fit into one of the following:

        • All employees in the Education sector;
          • Pre-school, Primary or Secondary school
          • A tertiary education institution such as TAFE or University

        • Employees in the Emergency Services sector;
          • Firefighters
          • Employee of a government Fire Service
          • Employee of Air Services Australia in their fire and emergency services
          • Police (state and federal)
          • State Emergency Services (SES)
          • Ambulance Services (including paramedics)

        • Employees that work in the Health sector;
          • Nurses
          • Midwives
          • Doctors
          • Pharmacists
          • Health care administrators
          • All other occupations employed in a health setting

        Because we know so many Australians value the hard work and commitment of essential workers, Hiver is open to the following categories who want to support the essential worker community too;

        • Graduates of an Australian University

        • Students currently studying at an Australian University

        • Immediate family of Hiver members

        • +1

The eligibility criteria is actually broader than just essential workers

Ok sure, poor choice of wording on my part but my point is that it's not open to everyone although the 'graduated an australian uni" would definitely include a lot.

  • +4

    Is this right?

    $100 -> $10.52 bonus - $5 activation fee = $5.52 savings -> 5.52% discount
    $250 -> $11.28 bonus - $7 activation fee = $4.28 savings -> 1.712% discount

    Go for the $100 cards?

    • +3

Yes that is correct unless they offer 10% discount like last time then go for the $250 one.

    • +6

      Is this right?

I don't think so. You will have already committed your money and to realise the savings you will have to shop again.

$105 spend now gives you $110.52 (100+10.52) to spend on future shops.
      (1-(105/110.52))*100 = ~4.99%

$257 spend now gives you $261.28 (250+11.28) to spend on future shops.
      (1-(257/261.28))*100 = ~1.64%

    • +4

IF you shop at Coles normally, then use the 5 x $100 GC's to buy Shopback Superswap Gift cards = $10 cashback. (2%)
Swap for $500 of Coles Gift cards and get another 500 flybuys when spent ($2.50 value)
And so a 2.5% additional savings benefit.

    • Purchase fee eats up half of the flybuys points so you really only get 1000 ($5). Bit of effort for that.

  • +5

    Too less. Pass

  • Hi all,

Just wondering what details you need to register with to use these prepaid master cards, eg drivers license/phone number etc.

I've never used one before figuring out if it's worth the effort.

    Thanks in advance :)

    • +2

      No reg needed.

    • same as to buy a gift card , but it's in credit card form.

  • Can I buy these with my flybuys dollars and stil get bonus points?

    • +5

You cannot purchase any gift cards using Flybuys Dollars at Coles.

If you select Card on the payment screen and then swipe the Flybuys card on the EFTPOS terminal, you’ll get an Invalid Product Mix error and will be sent back to the payment screen.

      • Thank you

      • +1

Does this possibly work on assisted checkouts? Or something changed in the last year.

In the 10% off deal last year, the cashier didn't mind me splitting payment with flybuy dollars.

I was waiting for a DENIED to come up, alarms blaring and the Coles police to arrest me on the spot. Have a nice day she said.

There was some drama at self checkout, Karen wasn't happy I was using flybuys but ended up going through anyway after she intervened, not sure can't recall what happened there exactly. Wouldn't try the self checkout again.

I have ~$400 worth FB points would love to be able to get these as I don't shop at Coles anymore.

        • +1

You can use flybuys Dollars at Coles Supermarkets, Kmart, Kmart Tyre & Auto Service, Target, Liquorland, BI-LO, First Choice Liquor and Coles Express.

          https://www.flybuys.com.au/about/

          • +2

@tharlow: Only Coles blocked the conversion from $FB to Coles Group & Myer GC which can be used to buy these cards.

        • +2

I tried about six months ago at a Coles self checkout when I was purchasing a third-party gift card.

The fact that I saw an Invalid Product Mix error pop up on the EFTPOS terminal means that Coles has coded their payment back-end to reject Flybuys Dollars when your transaction includes the purchase of gift cards, not within the POS system software that operates on each checkout.

However, I believe you can redeem Flybuys Dollars on SIM cards and mobile phone recharge vouchers at Coles (although I haven’t tested either of them within the last 12 months), as well as groceries at Coles. No idea about tobacco…

Having said all of that, who knows! Coles may have updated their back-end again and made my comment irrelevant! Feel free to try it out and let us know how you go. Or refer to this comment for an alternative route.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: As an additional note, I got invalid product mix when I tried to pay for the last 10% off prepaid MasterCards with my previous 10% off Coles purple prepaid MasterCard.

      • What about using Flybuy dollars for spend $x get y points type of Coles deals? Is that possible to collect flybuys points by spending flybuys dollars?

        • +3

Any amount of Flybuys Dollars redeemed in an in-store transaction will still count towards the spend requirement for Flybuys offers, because Flybuys Dollars is considered a payment method.

However, if you redeem the 2000 Flybuys points for a $10 instant discount in-store at Coles, the $10 you redeemed as a discount will not count towards the spend requirement for Flybuys offers, because this redemption method is treated as a discount, and Flybuys offers (and Flybuys points in general) are awarded on any amount spent after taking discounts into account. You can only use this redemption method if you have (or had) a Coles Financial Services product linked to your Flybuys account (e.g. Coles credit card, Coles car insurance).

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks again. It's strange that a reward system as restrictive as flybuys allows turning flybuys dollars into flybuys points! Good to know.

            • @Sharp: Last question, can I earn flybuys points by spending my wife's flybuys money? I.e. Scan my card first for earning points and swipe my wife's card to pay at the end?

              • +2

@Sharp: I have never tried that, but my hunch is that it would work.

                • +2

@WookieMonster: It works for me. Earn bonus pts on card A with payment from card B.

              • +1

@Sharp: I have done that before and haven't had a problem with earnings points on the Flybuys card scanned. The only thing I haven't tried is doing that online. I'm yet to try it

                • +1

@imissbeans: I have tried paying a different Flypay account than the Coles online account I was using for the shop. In the end, it stated that the points would be credited to the Flypay account. I could not take the chance as I was doing a 4-week deal. I canceled the order and redid it and paid by CC. If I had the same say 1-week order on both accounts I may try it. But now using Hiver anyway and as most of my bills are not eligible for their cashback I am trying to use it to the max on Coles.

  • +1

Does anyone know if u can buy 5x $100giftcard in one go get 5x2000 pts? Or u need to do it iui individual transactions?

    • +2

It does not matter whether you purchase the gift cards in one or more transactions. The only thing that matters is that you’ll only earn bonus Flybuys points on 5 gift cards during the promotional period.

    • +1

1 transaction for all 5 is fine

    • +1

It's ok if it's 5 x$100 but if you go over $1000 a Manager has to come to sign off on it. So better to split the purchase in that case. In some stores, you may have to wait a while.

    • +1

I bought 5 x $100 gift card yesterday in one transaction and received the standard 525 point plus bonus 10,000 points today!

  • Anyone know if you can do chargeback a on these cards in the case you buy something online and never receive the product?

    • can't so don't use them for that purpose

    • +1

Section 14 of the Cardholder Agreement states that you can dispute transactions, and Mastercard Scheme Rules will apply to any such disputes. You’ll need to call the gift card customer service hotline to initiate a dispute, as I cannot see any online forms that you can fill out.

I have not actually tried this myself (thankfully), so I have no idea how seamless this process is…

    • No, it was such a pain… I posted it before

    • +4

These cards can be added to PayPal, I’ve paid for some things just fine with them. So you can dispute with PayPal then.

      • +1

This online shop I wanted to buy from had PayPal which I used but was refunded after a week with no explanation. Then got an email saying they had their PayPal hacked which is why I was refunded. They apologized and offered 10% off so I placed another order. But noticed PayPal was gone from payment options so I used this gift card as I wasn't sure if I should trust with my real cc. In hindsight I should have just refused to use them after seeing PayPal not be an option.

It's been 2 weeks since I placed my order, after first week, I had to email to get a tracking number which turned out to be not real as auspost did not recognise the tracking number.

Emailed again in 2nd week and got a real number but it's been sitting at "shipping information approved by Australia Post" for a week now. Which from what I understand means they only registered the tracking number but the package hasn't been handed over to auspost yet.

I didn't take too many precautions as they have an eBay store with 98% positive feedback. But looking on the website now I realise there is no address listed or ABN…

  • Can I use these pre-paid Mastercards for oversea online transactions such as oversea Youtube premium subscription?

    • +1

No, as there is no proper name on the card

      • Thanks!

      • +4

The cardholder name doesn't really matter with Australian issued cards as privacy laws here prevent the payment processor from sharing personal information in most situations.

When making purchases online you can actually enter anything into the cardholder name field as it doesn't get checked. As long as everything else checks out the transaction will be processed. The same applies when an overseas site asks for the address and zip/post code associated with your card.

The only time your personal information is used is when you explicitly give permission for it. For example, using your card as a form of ID to activate a prepaid SIM online.

The real question is whether an overseas Youtube premium subscription will accept a card with an Australian Country Code.

    • +1

No, because you cannot use these prepaid gift cards for subscriptions or ongoing direct debits.

However, you can use them for overseas purchases (as long as the merchant does not mandate the payment method to support 3-D Secure), but there should be a 2.5% foreign transaction fee involved too.

  • +1

max 10000 bonus points per flybuys account?

  • I'm betting they'll all be hidden in the freezers within a couple of hours.

Coles really should either put in a limit of 1 or 2 cards per Flybuys account, or else make sure enough cards are available to meet all demand. Otherwise, what's the point of offering a deal that no one, who is honest & plays fair, can take advantage ?

    • +2

Limit of 5 and being stuck with FlyBuys points is the next best thing. Much better than the free-for-all 10% discount they had a while ago, in terms of reducing demand.

      • +1

Yeah, the 10% free-for-discount was just a completely ridiculous idea.

Coles' motivation for these discounts is to encourage more people to try out the cards, so that they'll then go & buy them at full price.

But how is that objective achieved when a very small number of rorters go & hide all the cards, and honest Coles customers can't buy them at all ?

    • +4

I'm betting they'll all be hidden in the freezers within a couple of hours.

Nah, demand won’t be anywhere near as high for this compared to the 10% off deal.

    • +1

To definitively solve any of these issues - just put up a sign at the gift card section saying they're available on request at the service desk.

  • Getting low in the effort : return ratio.

Especially if you need to chase the points, or if the gift card gets hacked, blocked, lost or other. Definitely need a second FB card, or the E:R may go negative.

  • +1

Here are the comments and questions answered from the previous deal on 11 June 2022.
Please read before placing your questions, as it may have already been answered.

    Happy Shopping …

    • I agree. Comments section should be closed. Nothing new or changed.

      • Awww… let the comments flow. Otherwise it will be like trying to watch live sport with the commentary off… on second thoughts — kill the comments! NOW!

      • Probably worth keeping comments section open to see if cards are reported hard to get this time round as a much less appealing deal compared to 10% off.

  • Where is there a purchase fee?

    • +1

You pay the purchase fee when you purchase the gift card at Coles.

      • The $100 denomination has a $5 purchase fee, so you end up paying $105 in total for the $100 gift card.
      • The $250 denomination has a $7 purchase fee, so you end up paying $257 in total for the $250 gift card.
  • What’s the percentage off per card? Thought the maths wizz would have been here already.
