  • Thanks a bunch. Will buy later tonight.
EDIT: Internal Hard drive prices aren't very attractive, neither is RAM. Gonna have to goto MSY to pick up those parts for Microserver unless you guys can cut the prices of some of those parts that would go nicely with the microserver

    • +1

the postage remain low when you order together.

      Kingston KTH-PL313E/4G 4 GB Ram - $24 <== i just checked MSY website $25

    • I searched for RAM that was compatible with the N40L and used OCAU and found the AMD Entertainment 1333 made by Patriot was compatible, even though it it not ECC - works fantastic. I got mine at MSY at $22 for 4G - its now $45 for a kit or $23/4G.

      • +1

thanks for the feedback, we did not carry Patriot brand yet. Kingston has been around and usually cost slightly more, the non ECC version is price at above: $24. I do know this is ozbargain, so every $ may count. But for comparing Kingston alone, we are still up there, plus you get them all together with no added cost in shipping.

      • -3

i got the patriot gamer 8g kit from msy for $46
        looks better than kingston.

      • -2

What's the difference between ECC and non-ECC ram?

  • +4

should be 256MB DDRII RAM not 256GB. however GB should be nice ; )

    • lol thanks and fixed

  • Newb alert…

Am looking for a media server / occasional gaming machine.

Can I throw a graphics card in the N40L and play games like Portal 2?

    • +12

Not really. To get a graphics card powerful enough run Portal 2 the PSU isn't gonna be able to power it. And the CPU is 1.5ghz, so there are two huge bottlenecks for you right there. I would highly advise to not try to game on it.
And you did say 'Newb alert' so I would assume you don't have the knowledge to understand the limitations of the box (no offence, just a friendly warning).

      • +5

        Cheers mate ;)

      • A Radeon HD 6450 won't cut it?

        • +3

No GPU could possibly save it.

    • Nope, that CPU isn't going to handle games very well.

  • +4

a few weeks ago, n40L was for $249 on your site as a normal price, you jacked it up to $279 and now selling for $239, cheapest atm, but not as cheap as you've done in the past ( $210 + shipping )

    • +7

Average Cost went up. We've worked hard to get this deal for you guys, so i hope you appreciate it :).

    • Cost seems to have shot up everywhere, pretty sure it was a HP promo keeping it low. This seems to be the cheapest deal available now

    • I noticed this as well. +ve from me, and I picked one up. After my WD NAS started playing up and I've had to transfer 6.5tb of data off it, I decided it was time to find something else.

Good to see this come through, even if it is only $10 cheaper. It's a good tax deduction for me as well.

  • ReadyNAS NV+ is this v2 or v1?

    • v1 by the looks of the specs page… 'IT3107 processor' which is sparc (v1) model.

  • For those looking at the HP N40L - they can actually take certain brands of 8GB RAM stick, meaning can upgrade to 16GB RAM. This is of most use if you are looking to run as a little VMware/ESXi or Hyper-V host. whrl.pl/RdbyWX

  • Hey how big is the box for the HP N40L?

    • -1

      about 1/2 cubic metre

  • Will anyone sell the orginal 2G of ram? I'm looking for this.

    • Heaps of them on fleabay last time I looked! :)

    • I got the original stick from N36L lying around, leave me a message if interested

    • I just checked the label, it is a 1GB ram from the N36L, are you interested?

      • Oh, no…..Mine is 2G, 1G ram will fit but not recommended. Thanks.

    • Yeah I've got an original 2GB of ECC RAM from the N40L that I'm happy to sell. What's a reasonable price? I'm in Sydney (very near Darling Harbour), if it helps.

      • I cannot send you a msg, would you please enable it?

  • will all nas and hdd shipped from overseas or local? warranty with shop or manufacturer?

    • +3

      Dear erwinsie,

We are Shopping Express - we only have 1 online store, and all stocks are Australia Stock with Manufacturer warranty - if that clarifies anything :).

  • Good deal, thanks. When will they begin to ship?

    • All products have their estimated dispatch time, most products with 1-2 working days dispatch will be dispatch within 24 hours after receipt of payment.

  • @REP, any coming deal on the WD Scorpio Black 750GB SATA Internal Hard Drive WD7500BPKT? Thanks.

    • ah…You love this more than an SSD? So far we have no plans on the black 2.5 inch drives - unless you and the others are hinting us otherwise..?

      • Thanks for replying, I need one myself, need large capacity drive with reasonable speed for my old laptop, can live without SSD, which can be justified for upgrading a new machine IMO.

        • +3

hmm..mind if i ask how much longer do you plan on using your current laptop? Might worth to give the SSD - many ssds cheaper than 750Gb WD. You can do storage with NAS, or external drives nowadays, unless you really need to store a lot of data on your laptop for carry around.

        • +1

Good solution for old laptop is to replace the optical drive with a bay convertor, then fit a standard SATA 2.5 SSD where the optical drive used to be. You get SSD for the system drive and HDD for mass storage. Best of both worlds. For example:

          http://www.techpowerup.com/165545/Donya-Intros-SATA-Adapter-…

You can get these bay convertors for $15 on eBay.

  • With the N40L, is there a way to get a second ethernet port so I can have the server connect to 2 routers/networks?

    • Its got internal expansion ports and several USB ports so either a PCI-E NIC or USB -> ethernet adaptor would probably work

    • Sure, you can use a low profile PCIX card. Or maybe even a ethernet to usb dongle

    • USB to ethernet might be too slow though, you're better off using a low profile enthernet pcie card

  • So any PCI-e low profile ethernet card should be fine yeah?

    • Most commonly used on is the Intel Gigabit CT pci-e card.

That's what I've got on one of the microservers.

A few people also use the HP NC360T if you want to use a dual gigabit card (this is what I plan to order for the ESX microservers).

  • newb question, does this server have built in wifi receiver to connect to the network ?

    • No wireless built in, you need a wireless USB or PCI-e card :-)

      • +3

connecting to wifi would mean a slow server ?

        • yes, wireless connection is slower

  • +1 for QNAP TS-412. Awesome product for SOHO and Home use

  • What do you guys run on your 40L?

    FreeNAS? OpenVideoVault? Something else?

    • I investigated FreeNAS and OpenVideoVault but settled on UBuntu 12.04 minus the Lightdm display manager as I have built custom Linux Kernels in the past and am familiar with Linux configution files.

Basically comes down to if you are going to upgrade the RAM - FreeNAS needs LOTs of RAM for the ZFS formatted drives - check the specs but 4GB is generally baseline.

OpenVideoVault - meh… Windows Home Server 2011 is a good option with 2GB ram.

My N40L I have since upgraded to 8Gb RAM and run SAMBA (for windows shares and backups) and MiniDLNA server (for going to about 8 DLNA compliant devices in the house, both wired and non-wired. Does it all easily - far better than a traditional NAS BUT does have NO Hardware RAID from memory if that's important.

  • prefer someone local with easier warranty, Scorptec is selling $249 pickup, so basicly it's cheaper than $239+$12 shipping

at this price it would not attract me! ;-)

    • It's server grade hardware, IIRC HP will either come out to you or give you a local service agent?

      • not too sure about HP services, but would imagine it's a bit hassle
also it's a better/cheaper option for people to get it now
instead of dealing with transit and/or post office + if it's DOA, instant exchange?

call me old fashion, but I always support:
local "physical" shop > aust online shop > oversea seller

support & warranty is better with locals too!
who know if the online shop spend the money they earned from you by ordering from oversea?
(not referring to SE here, still this is a good deal)

  • If i buy the HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer NAS, what other bits do I need to be able to get it up and running as a media server to handle blu ray quality discs and a NAS?

    • vid card?
    • OS?

I think ive read it comes with a 250gb HDD and 2gb of ram?

Last question, does this have USB3.0 ports and how many?

    • +1

      no, 2.0

    • IIRC: 7x USB 2.0 (incl 1x inside, a great a boot dev)

    • At the very least you will need an OS, some RAM and a graphics card.

You will need a device on which to store the OS (like a 2GB USB thumb drive) and probably some more HDDs for storage (though to start the included 250GB works).

If you want it to play blu-ray discs you will need a blu-ray drive.

      • is 2 gb ram not enough ?

        • -2

To play back HD video? Nah.

        • to use it as a NAS ?

    • +1

See my post above about FreeNAS and other OS's

Comes with 250Gb hard drive, so enough to get started. No video card required as the motherboard has an onboard which works fine for a server. 2Gb ram is reasonable - most OS's will use any available these days but it is something you can add post.

AMD Dual Core is magic litte box

  • do i need to install a sound card to make it work as a NAS ?

    • +1

No. You only need a sound card if you want it to play sound.

  • Wish I was able to purchase 2x N40L's at that price.

@Rep: If I make two transactions will it go through?

    • Please do not make more than 1 order, this is a limited special for as many people to enjoy. Thanks!

      • No problem I didnt.

I just ordered 2 from somewhere else.

        Thanks.

        • They must've been cheaper then, so how's about a little linky-poo? Looks like SE is out of stock, so I'm sure somebody will appreciate the gesture! ;)

        • +2

          No not cheaper.

          I purchased mine from Megabuy.

          http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-658553-371-proliant-n40l-micros…

As you can see, it's more expensive, but they allowed me to purchase 2 together, so for the saving of $45, I didn't bother with Shopping Express.

        • go to whirlpool forum… there's a 50-page thread about a disaster called "Megascam"

  • Anyone bought/used the QNAP 459 Pro II ?
    Need something pre-built.
Recommended for running Plex ? Can you upgrade it's RAM ? Or are they sealed units?

  • What would you recommend for memory and HDD's looking to order a complete package.

  • -1

how can the HP microserver be a bargain when the shoppingsquare was selling it for 209 a while back!

    • read throught all comments before posting

      • -2

yeah I read the above comments and avg cost going up is a lame excuse for increase in price. you guys can accept this fact and buy this massive bargain

Given that the cheapest on staticice is currently Megabuy @ $264 without shipping…PLE @ $259 want $45 to ship one…it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to spot the deal if you wanted one of these today.

FWIW, I bought mine for $209; but that was then, this is now…things change mate, this is a bargain as it stands today!

  • Out of stock of the N40L :( Any more coming in?

  • This article thanks about compatible memory if you need 16GB

    http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/Memory

  • What you go for?

    • If you are asking about memory, I am going for Corsair CMV16GX3M2A1333C9 16GB.

  • YMMV, but some users have reported that it works, while papelboyl1 is reporting that it doesn't work for him

http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=958208&pa… (read from post 6488 onwards).

I know it didn't work intially for Blinky, however, he tried it on another stock bios N40L and it worked for him.

    • Darn … I should have just gone with AMD memory. Seems papelboyl1 updated his bios. Maybe I should just cancel my order.

      • You can try it stock…

I think Blinky's and Biohazard is running stock.

The Hacked BIOS will only come into place if you want to run the internal sata port at full speed.

If you are planning to use a RAID card, then you won't have a need for the hacked BIOS

For those of you who are shopping for these things, you might like to know that Netgear is having a "cashback" (in the form of a prepaid VISA) offer of around $30 for the 2 and 4 bay NAS's. http://www2.netgear.com.au/bonus/promos/storeandsave.asp

The one on this site that qualifies is:
    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/netgear-rnd4000-readyn…

Otherwise you may be able to find the ReadyNAS Duo around $159-$170, minus $30 gives $129-$140, which is a nice price for a nice NAS. Officeworks also stocks some of the ReadyNAS range, so you may be able to start with 5% price match guarantee before the cashback.

    • i have ammended the post to include this for more people to see.

  • Would like the qnap 119II + :)

  • Damn….sold out of N40L :(

  • +1

What is the major differences between these 2 models:

    ii. Iomega StorCenter px4-300d 4 Bay NAS - $499

    v. QNAP TS-459 Pro II - $819

Looks like Iomega is heaps more worth the deal here?? It is cheaper by 40% and the specs do not vary that much. Why the massive price difference????

  • Hi,

    Pricing inconsistency.
QNAP TS412 is $339 on this page (below), but $350 when put into the basket??

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/view/EOFY_Sale_NAS

    Please review thanks
    Cheers

  • Is this sale over?
or just that the HP N40L microserver is all sold out?
The EOFY link is still up with the sale prices.

  • Really need that 40L, ordered (at the inflated $265 price!) with an 8gb kit. Do you have them in stock soon? Any chance of speeding the delivery for OzBargain members ;-)
