It is an external HD model. Thanks god the prices of HD have now come back to pre- Thai flood levels.
Are they though? Internal harddrives still aren't as cheap as they use to be. The cheapest 1TB hdd at MSY is still $92. Which is strange because we're seeing 2TB externals for only a few dollars more… and they have the same hdds inside anyway.
Yes, for some reason externals are currently trending cheaper than internals. It's weird, since they're pretty much the same thing but external drives need additional bits like casing and USB.
Maybe it's a way to dump old/discontinued models?
i read somewhere that drive sold as external (ie goes into case) are lower quality (same model), manufacturer dont expect people use external drives 24/7 like internal so they think its ok to sell them with cheaper price than internal.
they arent/cant be different quality - the price difference comes from the fact that internal drives from MSY etc are excess stock that are based on daily market prices.
Officeworks/HN/JB etc etc. get orders from a supplier where they already have standing contracts for XXXX units per month, those contracts must be fulfilled first by seagate etc. Excess stock then goes to OEM channels, if stock is low in these channels, then prices will be high.
If Officeworks/HN etc cant clear their monthly quota's of XXXX units then they may be forced to sell at a cheaper/near cost price because next month's shipment will come in and that cant be changed/stopped.
Nope, there's still some way to go before it drops down to pre-Thai flood levels.

Cheapest it's been is USD$79.99, so prices have only recently gone down past the halfway mark. There was news that those prices will never been seen again, due to being that at that time, they were basically selling at cost/loss price since the inventory was really backed up. After the flood, stock levels are yet to regain back to normal and you would think they'd be smarter about managing inventory to not let it build up to where they have to sell at cost price again.
(from a manufacturer, not wholesaler/retailer)Not pre flood yet…. i bought a 2TB WD Green internal for $89 last year.
They are still over $115.
I assume this is not portable?
It's not "pocket" sized portable, if that's what you're thinking of. 2TB pocket drives for under $100? Not possible even with pre-Thai flood prices.
Or course it's portable. It's under 10kg or so, easily lifted by one person.
So is my desktop computer…
This should be the internet/catalogue price. :( If someone who has/is going to purchase it could post a receipt that would be great.
Look at the picture it's the poster size should apply to all HN cos it is NOT hand written.
That does make sense. On the website it is
http://www.harveynorman.com.au/seagate-2000gb-3-5-port-expan…It would be great if the rep could confirm.
I think he ticked the rep box by accident.
It will be store specific, but you can try and get other HN to match it. But they are all independent franchises, so I wouldn't hold your breath.
Hit up Office Works for a price match and save 5% + free delivery.
Would they match a poster like that though? I haven't been too lucky with price matching at OW.
Edit: I am certain they will not, esp. when it does not give too many details on the drive.
OW rang the HN store and confirmed which drive was on special.. price matched within a minute

Champion. Cheers mate.
Anyone know what internal drives they hold? Green?
I assume these are the same ones from OW? If so, it's an ST2000DM001 (not green)
does anyone know if this can be attached to usb of samsung TV's ??
Yes, you can.
Just check with the TV specs though I have seen some that limit attached storage to 1TB (not sure why).
how big is the AC adapter? I had one that was as big as the drive again…
There is no power brick (like a laptop), just a power-plug that's roughly the size of a mid 90's cellphone charger.
In other words just wide enough to block neighboring ports from having the same kind of plug next to them, i hate those bloody things, i need 3 powerboards to power my tv, loungeroom pc, and 3x WD Elements drives.
I got one the wart isn't so bad, and it's light. I'd rate it as 'could be worse'
I possibly will that the harddisk out and put it as internal…
Damn. Got it at office works for $98 :(
Same :(
argh I hate the AC power, i hope there's a portable version as cheap as this one
Well, you will be waiting quite a while… maybe come back in a few years?
just to let everyone know, i picked up my 2TB today from OW, it turn out to be "product of china" not the batch that was in other OW that's "product of thailand", manufactured date is 11/2011 not 02/2012.
That possibly comes from an older batch.
I can see the new batch that are on sale in JB/OW at the moment are all post 1/2012.
My externals from Office Works were made in china.
Mine was product of china, assembled in thailand.
So any OW pricematched at 94 - 5% = 89.3$ ….receipt scan plz :D
Hopefully my local OW has some stock left, never got in on this deal, perhaps its best that I waited.
so the OW "product of Thailand" manu date 11/2011 had a USB 3.0 port?
yup
crazzzzy price for external hard drive that is 2 tb
OP which HN is that?
it looks like the wynyard store…Martin Place (it's in the title!).
haha lols thx
heading down there tmr :)
Could I open and then use the drive inside as an internal hard drive? Will it have the same sata connectors etc. or some custom configuration?
You sure can.
but don't rely on warranty
go nuts, OW five dock has probably 10 of these sitting just opposite the counter
paid $89.30 for mine and now using to backup the macbook air :)

someone do a hdd test using hddtune and crystal disk mark with usb 3.0 port
and post some spec please
also give us the internal model of the hdd please
Some people reported: ST2000DM001 (7200rpm) while other people reported: ST2000DL003 (green / 5900rpm)
USB 3.0 test result (NEC chipset) - I think my one might be the 7200rpm one based on the result (not sure though)
Sequential Read: 133.5MB/s
Sequential Write: 127.7MB/sUSB 3.0 test result (intel H77/Z77 chipset) - don't have time to test this combo yet.
My pc is a i7 x58a-ud3 motherboard with onboard 2 USB3 ports running Win7 64bit.
I tested these only 2 days ago.
I got 2 from JB few days ago.
The test data i used was 1.28TB in 6200 Files - pracitally all files > 200MB in size so no small files. [Note heaps of small files make everything bog down]
I copied 1.28TiB data to disk 1 then copied that disk 1 to disk 2 - both same ext disks.
It copied at 105MB/sec average speed over the 1.28TB between disks - i was surprised it averaged that high.I also ran Atto disk benchmark.
Empty drive read/write for transfer size > 8KB around 138 MB/sec
With 1.28TiB data on it the read/write for transfer size > 16KB around 95 MB/secThey do have one annoying behaviour, they take a very long time to spin up if they have spun down.
Like hmmm 30+ seconds - which is a looong time.
Does that mean OW will do $93? If they don't they will have to beat it by 5%.
Saw what must be an OB'er today try to get HN to beat OW's "beat it by 5% of HN's price"
Good on ya. If that worked you'd get OW to beat HN's beat of OW's beat of … and eventually you'd get the item for free!can anyone please confirm if this deal is still available? Is there still stock left at Harvey Norman Martin Place?
Well…I tried Price matching at OW in Dandenong Vic, and they refused. Say they can't do interstate even when its not in their terms and conditions. Got mine for $98.
I bought one today from Office Works, Price matched - 5% = for 89.something cents. He was aware it was store specific deal from Sydney but still said they had to beat it. Looked like there were at least +20 remaining at Maroochydore Store, Sunshine Coast, QLD (INTERSTATE PRICE BEAT)
Could you please post your receipt? I would like to speak to my local OW representative again concerning this irregularity. Thanks
Cheers! Just bought 2 from office works in dandenong vic for $89.3 each.
For those who need a receipt :)
-> http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg41/scaled.php?server=41&fil…Many thanks JohnBB. Just what I needed.
My local HN (Port Macquarie) had them shelf priced at $203, and initially didn't want to do anything, but when I said OK, I'll just get them online from OW, he matched the price, grumbling all the time saying he was losing money at that price.
When I got home, I saw the HN site now has them at $99
Seagate = dead drive after a few weeks or months…
desktop ??
