  • Ok for ps5?

    • +7

      no

Only look at GEN 4 nvme drives. anything that isn't that won't work with a PS5.

      • +1

So what is the best or cheapest 2TB or 1TB drive to get for PS5 right now?

        • +1

Mabye try Amazon "2tb gen 4 nvme drive" and sort by price? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🫣

  • +2

This is great for a secondary game storage drive but would avoid as the primary/OS drive

    • would avoid as the primary/OS drive

      why?

      • Last sentence of the linked Toms review:

For those considering the P2, please steer clear….

Basically - it's slow. Not what you should be aiming for for a system drive.

      • +3

It's mainly the sustained write and the NAND controller supports 4 channels only. The latter hampers QLC even further (hence the poor sustained write).
If this is a pure data drive for mostly reads, then it is still okay.

The reason why you want a better OS drive is that you are worth it.

this is how much low-end 2TB M.2 ssds should cost tbh. value proposition rly isn't that great otherwise.

  • Time to wait for a GOOD ssd at this price

  • OK, base on 40MB/s, it will take ~13 hours to write entire 2TB data to this drive.

Now I know why low endurance isn't even a problem for QLC drives. People lose patience, the drive won't even be used lol

If the "dynamic" SLC cache for 500GB P2 is 135GB, extending that for 2TB ( x4 ) would be 540GB.

It's all about knowing how to use the drive. If you only write 540GB at a time and then wait for a while for the recovery, then you still get better than SATA3 performance (1.16 GBps SLC cache write speed). It would have been nice had Tomshardware reviewed the 2TB version because it is technically possible for 2TB to do better in sustained write than 500GB (whether Crucial has done it is a question mark without test result).

So, you need another source drive to send data at 1.16GBps constantly for more than 540GB to see this drop for 2TB. Bear in mind, that's the best case (i.e. you don't fill the 2TB close to 90%). That dynamic SLC cache is sure to drop once the drive is 50% filled.

      • +1

Yeah, I have two 1TB P1s, when the cache is exhausted, they are absolutely awful. But otherwise, they are good enough for day to day use, the cache is big enough so you pretty much never run into the QLC bottle neck. If you do have heavier workloads, why would you buy the cheapest storage out there in the first place?

      • +1

Just want to point out the dynamic SLC cache will drop as the drive is filled, so when the drive is 50% filled, probably aim for 270GB or less.

  • Can anyone advise if the above drive will work in the below laptop?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/709034

    • +2

      yes it will work

      • Great thanks, so hard to find details of what's in there and what can go in the second slot.

  • +1

Bought with a pack of soothers

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01GCEUWMS?

  • anyone know of a good external usb-c enclosure for this to make it portable?

  • +1

This or pay a bit extra for Gigabyte AORUS 2TB NVMe? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/713540

  • Is P1 better than this?

  • anyone know of a good 2242 form factor m.2 SATA ssd that is suitable for primary OS drive? Plan to shove this into the wwan port and turn the 2280 to storage drive.

    • Pretty sure those wwan m.2 slots often have cut down pcie lanes. Might not be ideal for a boot drive, I would consider allocating them the other way around

  • According to https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-p2-m-2-nvme-ssd… , game load speeds are 50% longer than a Samsung 970 (using Fanial Fantasy 14 benchmark). So while cheaper, it is poor value for money.
