FERM Angle Grinder 20V 125mm 4.0ah Kit $65 @ Reject Shop (in-Store Only)

110

Saw this in the comments of the reciprocating saw deal. The 4.0Ah battery makes this the better buy in my opinion. The equivalent Ozito battery costs $69 and slightly smaller grinder $59 for skin only.

I wouldn't recommend this (or the Ozito) if you are going to be cutting steel or masonry all day but if you just do the occasional grinding/sanding it is perfectly adequate.

Quite a few other FERM branded products which are priced very well. Don't buy the blower though, I have the identical looking 18V Victa and it can barely blow dry leaves on the highest power setting.

but if you just do the occasional grinding/sanding it is perfectly adequate.

I get it, we all want our tools, and have dreams of doing "all the jobs," but jeez this buying a tool for the occasional use is one of the many negative outcomes of our consumer society. Use once, often sits in garage forever after. Borrowing things from a friend (of a friend) seems a lost art. Not crapping on the deal.

Still cheaper than hiring one, or paying someone to do the job for you…

Yeah that's a problem in itself and a reason why we're going to hell.

        • -3

          Yeah that's a problem

Why is getting things cheaper a problem?

Why are you on OzBargain then?

          • @jv: It is possible to get things with lower markups without necessarily destroying people or the planet.

            • -2

@fantombloo: Same with this deal, can buy for $65 instead of $265….

You are also free to charge it with your solar panels instead of fossil fuels…

              • @jv: You really don't live up to your namesake at all.

I stopped lending things when returning borrowed things became a lost art

        Unfortunately this.
        How hard is it?

        Get better friends.

Also not everybody takes care of the tools use them roughly which annoys me a lot, that's in addition to when you need it & you have to ask for it & make things complicated

  • Would love to hear opinions on this grinder - hopefully better than the equivalent Ozito grinder. Lacks power and "grinds" to a halt with little provocation.

Lacks power and "grinds" to a halt with little provocation.

Maybe handy when it kicks back, slips out of your hands and engages with your tibia?

      • I call it "my little friend". Oh I see - your leg.

i bought an 18v autobarn angle grinder when it was on sale and it's been fine so far. i used it to cut through old galvanised water pipe. i haven't tried using it for grinding.

The equivalent Ozito is probably the 115mm, as the FERM does not appear to be brushless.

Lacking power in this case generally comes down to how much power battery can deliver. The Ozito angle grinder for example is noticeably better on a 4Ah battery rather than a 2Ah battery, and has noticeably more grunt with a freshly charged battery.

The FERM grinder is very likely the same. For that price, I can't imagine the cells are as good as the Ozito ones, but new they probably deliver similar power for a while.

Any high powered battery tool has this same issue, which is why many run dual batteries, or higher voltages. For a single battery 18V tool, you won't get much more than about 20% of the power compared to what a plug in 240V tool has available.

That said, the little Ozito 115mm angle grinder is excellent, and I imagine this FERM one is decent enough for odd jobs.

Important to remember with battery tools is due to the lower power, you need to take things a bit slower. An angle grinder should never stall out - if it does then either it is faulty, or you are pushing too hard. You can only cut / grind so fast with the power available, and pushing harder makes it slower.

This discussion came up in the $29.50 Ozito angle grinder deal a few months back, and I cracked out my 6 year old Ozito grinder and made a dumb video testing it cutting a 5mm bolt - including stalling it out on purpose. It took a reasonable amount of effort, and easy off a bit made for some fast cuts.

      • Thanks - tried all of that.
I think my grinder must be faulty. It grinds to a halt with even light pressure on a 5mm bolt.
        Will test the guarantee.
edit: just looked at your link. Not sure why a lawyer would cut a padlock on a neighbour's shed. I am sure the case is that the neighbour requested it to be done, since they were on holiday and needed something checked out promptly?

Angle grinder lawyering takes some strange turns! Turns out you don't even need a law degree.

But yeah that video, while frivolous, gives you an idea of the cutting speed on a 5mm bolt. (skip to near the end…)

Does it cut out the same on different batteries? In theory the angle grinder could be fine, and the battery no good. The batteries BMS kicks in when the voltage drops to0 low, and stops giving any power. Then the battery resets as the voltage picks up, and the tool works again (once you turn it off and on again), until under load, which repeats the process.

So a battery with a bad cell for example might cause the grinder to cut out. Or just an old battery - especially if less than 3 or 4 Ah. IIRC, the battery lights flash when it cuts out due to under voltage.

  • Aldi has a few power tools on sale this Saturday. Including a grinder for $30. Wired. Experiencing delays.

Not sure i'll be buying unknown brand spinny death disk machine from Reject Shop. Maybe Bunnings will price match with their Ozito equivalent

Better with 240v for occasional use, also more power to remove fingers…

Great to keep in the trunk for when you get clamped :)

  • Recip saw would be decent for tree pruning, I've got one of these in a black and decker brand thats very similar looking and makes slicing through small and medium branches a breeze, much better than shears and basically an electric pruning saw: https://www.rejectshop.com.au/p/reciprocating-saw-20v-2-0ah

    Battery is only 2ah though
