  • Can I use this with any zigbee device?

    • No only Xiaomi and Aqara sensors will work. That's where Home Assistant comes into play to make various brands work with each other.

      • +4

If you're going down the home assistant route anyway, much better off getting a ZigBee dongle like the sonoff for about $20-25.

I'm transitioning all of my aqara stuff across to that and wish I'd just started with that.

        • Would you mind sharing why U change from Aqara to Zigbee? home assistant route means Google one?
So using Zibee dongle like sonoff could also connect Xiaomi, Aqara and other peripherals

Sorry for any silly question πŸ«£πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‰

          • +1

@aussiebg: Home assistant means Home assistant. It's an program/OS you run on a device (Raspberry Pi/NAS) that you can add various home automation devices to and set up various dashboards and automations.
You can set up the sonoff dongle to work with home assistant and add all kinds of zigbee devices from various brands.

        • Why is that? Are the devices cheaper or better?

My home is full of Xiaomi and aqara, and wondering what the advantages may be of switching?

          • +1

@jackwoz: It's not that the devices are all necessarily cheaper or better (a lot are), it just gives more flexibility (plus you don't have to deal with trying to understand Chinese every time you try to pair something).

I can use aqara/xiaomi devices with my sonoff dongle, but I can also add IKEA tradfri stuff. And they have really good reasonably priced switches/remotes and bulbs/
And I can also add basically any other zigbee device to it and it works well.

        • The zigbee dongles (sonoff) aren't standalone though are they - you'd have to have the rasberry pi setup or a dedicated PC to run it, so a lot more $ and mucking around than an all in one $35 Aqara hub

          • +2

@PhilToinby: Yes. That's why I caveated with "if you're going down the home assistant route anyway" in which case you'd likely have a dedicated device already.

      • Ahh so I'm better off with a Conbee 2? And these Xiaomi and Aqara sensors will work with it right?

I'm already playing with Home Assistant, mainly Hue, Ikea and Tuya stuff.

        • these xiaomi sensors are very patchy outside their own ecosystem, the motion sensor is notoriously unreliable (but battery lasts long time). The temperature sensor is quite good. With that being said if you invest decent amount in them best to have extra as back up because some of them just fail overtime.

        • I think so. You should also be able to use Hue stuff with it too (I know you can use IKEA). Just set up zigbee2mqtt with the dongle and you're on.

        • I have a conbee 2 and am happy with it, using the deconz software addon with home assistant.

I think the newest recommendation is to use a sonoff stick paired with zigbee2mqtt or zha software.

      • How does this compare to first gen xiaomi gateway I wonder

excellent deal. I am assuming this is not the near-brand new Gen 2, which has customisable tones and WPA3 etc?
also, this doesn't need the aqara app to be set to CN region right?

    • +2

Not sure about model but it looks identical to me… price suggests China Mainland version… the one I got from AliExpress works but has a few quirks:
      * Voice instructions are not in English (but can use Google Translate app to translate conversation in real-time, but kinda need a second phone if also trying to sync to Aqara app)
      * Could not get the Aqara app to "bind" the hub after many attempts with region set to Oceana, Other or China Mainland.
      * Aqara app works fine in "HomeKit mode" which does not require any login (in fact must NOT be logged in or can't "bind" as above).
      * I had trouble syncing accessories via the app, instead pressing the button three times and following (translated) voice prompts before adding the hub to the app worked.
      * Although the plug fits our sockets, the device is upside down and does not quite sit flush due to the switches on the powerpoint. A non-switched adapter or powerboard would fix this though.

I have the M1 version of it and have been using it since 2019. There are around 29 accessories connected at the moment. Visually identical to this but specs are cut down version of this. Here is my experience with it:

I get instructions in English not Chinese. It was Chinese at the beginning but after I changed some settings on it now it talks English.

Looks like my region is United States. I think it didn't work on other regions for me too.

If you enable "HomeKit mode" you will lose the ability to seeing logs of devices such as temperature history etc. Devices will work regardless of Homekit mode or not.

I have added accessories both ways, 3 times button press on the gateway and via Aqara app.

You are right about power outlet's little on/off switch but because on/off switch stays pressed down gateway fits flushed. The only issue is you cannot operate the switch without taking the gateway out. On the other hand, if you need to turn the switch of that's mean you will cut the power off so no harm just pulling the gateway off. I think the actual problem is that if you plug the gateway to double power outlet then you won't be able to use the second one due to its size.

    • Wowww new Gen2 will have potential to support Matter which is good.

"The M1S Gen 2 is expected to receive the Matter OTA update after the Matter rollout, allowing the connected Aqara accessories to work with other Matter-compatible devices."

I wonder if M2 will support it as well or not…

      • +1

It’s already been confirmed the m2, m1s and m1s gen 2 will. :) even the pocket sized e1 will apparently link

Another good deal from you @Clear. Thank you. My M1 is almost full. I needed to upgrade it. Good timing :)

  • Mine arrived today, so delivery was ok. It's a bugger to setup though. After an hour of trying to get it to sync with both the Aqara app and then the Xiaomi app, still nothing….next time I would spend a few extra $ and get a local version

    • Is your region set to China?

      • Yes, I originally set it to Oceania, but then switched back to China after reading a few blogs on this topic. It still won't connect.though, so more advice would be appreciated! I also set my wifi to 2.4GHz only which is supposed to help. I nearly had it working…it detected the unit but then got the error code 10004

        • +1

Apparently Aqara support is supposed to be quite good. Would be worth a shot [email protected].

          • @Clear: I ended up getting it to work after pressing the button ten times which does some sort of more complete reset than holding the button for 10 seconds!

            • @PhilToinby: same here. all it needed was a metaphorical whack via a button spam reset and I got it working too.
I like the nightlight. I actually drilled a huge hole into my bedside table so the m1s sits flush on the surface lol #propertydamage

honestly, the china region thing is a bit of a bummer because my m2 hub is in EU but it's not too bad seeing as switching regions is so simple and only requires a re-login. and if I really want, I think I can re-set up my m2 in CN as well but I cbb

          • @Clear: yeah, they are. I've had 2 interactions and one was literally me rambling and then resolving my issue but they still followed up. better than Nanoleaf at least

  • Expect ongoing unsolicited SMS spam from this company (even if you dont make an account and just check out with Paypal, they obviously harvested the phone number from there), replying with "Stop" doesn't stop it either !
