Scoot One Way: London $452 ($383 with Hack), Berlin, Germany $466 [Sep - Nov] @ Beat That Flight

700

Firstly, the sale details:
Airline: Scoot
Ticket: One Way
From: SYD/MEL/GC/PER
To: London, Athens, Berlin
Baggage: 10kg carry-on included
When: Sep to Nov
Plane type: Most of the long haul flights are on 787-9 Dreamliners

Athens, Greece $324

Then the 'hack'. If you use the Athens flight, eg $324 one way from Sydney, you can split it up into a multicity, reducing your ticket price to London to $406 (example 1, example 2).

Then if you SPLIT the tickets into two separate bookings, you can get it for even less: $324 + $59 = $383 one way to London from Sydney!

Interestingly Scoot has the same rating on ProductReview.com as Qantas - 1.6 out of 5

This lead me to find that only four airlines have a rating > 3. At least they are consistently inconsistent!

  • Is food / drink included on these Scoot flights (sorry if noob question)?

    • +1

No, you have to pay extra.

      • +1

        Thank you! 🙂

They don’t even allow you to bring your own food or snacks on board. If you’re discreet you can probably get away with it but there’s plenty of stories of people being scolded by irate flight attendants.

      • REALLY!? Wtf! That’s mad. 🤯 Thanks so much for letting me know.

        • I've brought on duty-free alcohol and consumed it discreetly

        • +1

You must be new to low cost travel. This is normal, even Jetstar do this from time to time.

      • +9

im going to put roast lamb in one pocket and mashed potato in the other, they will never know

        • Thought it would be chips in one pocket and Chicken Kiev in the other.

      • +1

They don't care about bringing personal food. Just be discreet and don't flaunt it in their face or make mess.

What are they gonna do? Throw you off the flight mid air? Flew Scott recently and several people eating their snacks without any issues.

      • +3

Flown a few times to Greece. Brought heaps of food on. Didn't try to conceal anything. No one cares. Don't stress about this, it's not an issue. Also. Bring an empty water bottle, fill it up at the check in lounge. Bring a decent neck pillow. Profit.

    • +5

Lol, not even just the food, literally everything you want is extra. I don't know if I'd choose Scoot again if I had the choice of another airline for a little bit more.

I flew to Greece in 2019 with Scoot. Didn't want to pay the exorbitant food prices, so stuffed myself on the way there at the airport. Saw so many people with subway on the plane, so on the way back, joined the club. If you do it discreetly, they won't notice. I'm not paying $12 for some POS plane food.

Then it moves onto inflight entertainment - need to pay to have an app work on your phone (no screens on the seats). Then if you want the power point on, you pay, if you want water, you pay, if you want a blanket, you pay, if you want a pillow, you pay.

I swear they turned the Air con on colder just to make people cold so they would buy blankets hehe.

I was fine as I knew the conditions and went ahead (ie had downloaded content and power bank), but if another airline was only a little more, might actually be not much extra once you factor in adding luggage to Scoot. Many airlines now charging for overhead cabin bags too.

You should have seen the lines at the boarding gate for the water fountain - as they make you tip out the water for the security scanner, so people were refilling their bottle. Airline staff were trying to demand people skip that and go on the lane but no one budged. They were damned if they weren't going to bring on their own water and forced to buy Scoot water for overpriced amounts.

      • Airline staff were trying to demand people skip that and go on the lane but no one budged

A bit like school in Asia then.

Ryanair would have ambush checks of people's overhead luggage. Make sure it is the right (ryanair) size and weight. The Ryanair size is not standard carry on so if you buy a hard standard hard case you are screwed. If you get a soft shell or find something that just smaller hard case you're good.

Appreciate the feedback of what happens…
So if I used this, I’d plan it this way:

not even just the food, literally everything you want is extra.

I’d stuff myself with just protein and fat foods before the gates. start myself on a nutritional fast, so I wouldn’t need to eat much.

Then it moves onto inflight entertainment - need to pay to have an app work on your phone (no screens on the seats).

As this is a relatively new feature on planes I’m used to old school entertainment like reading. A kindle/kobo device would give me a good amount of use without charge. And as you also noted: bring a power bank.

if you want water, you pay.

Can’t do much about that (unless I can drink from the loo, lol)

if you want a blanket, you pay, if you want a pillow, you pay.

        Just bring your own.

Many airlines now charging for overhead cabin bags too.

Didn’t know this. So cheers for heads up. Doesn’t surprise me as every flight I’ve taken in the last 5 years has seen people abuse this overhead storage factor tbh.

Oh. And a sneaky one I’ve done before on long haul flights is to take some kind of sedative in flight.
A little, rarely used by myself, sleeping tablet, and something that makes me drowsy like phenergan (can claim it’s for air sickness) can help you pass by a decent few of those hours.

        Sounds like a horrible experience!

I don’t get why people will scrape and scrounge for cheap flights like these despite knowing what they’re getting (or not getting, more like!)

My thinking is since I spend most of my year working my ass off, I’ve earned myself the basic comforts of at least economy class while traveling on an annual vacation. If I can’t afford even that, I’d rather not travel, or I’d just find somewhere cheaper to vacation where I can enjoy basic comforts.

Everyone’s mileage differs of course, so good luck to those who can, and are willing to, rough it out.

Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙂

I just BYO powerbanks, refillable water bottle, duty free spirits, aluminium shot cup, hoodie, entertainment stuff on my phone, eat beforehand. Easy way to save $200.

I don’t get why people will scrape and scrounge for cheap flights…
I spend most of my year working my ass off

          I've heard that defence before…
My work in my own business, was as a consultant helping corporate clients understand what was important to them. Especially in work.
They all reduced their workload & time spent working, increased their income & productivity for their company, & enjoyed their lives so much more. Everyone gained.

So I lived by that example. What was important to me? Learning new things, exploring cultures & different aspects of life … travel!

Took 3 x 3 months trips per year overseas for several years. And a few months per year for over a decade more. By keeping costs very low. (Flying Scoot etc)

Never had to scrape and scrounge for cheap flight - I had money. But enjoyed the challenge, like many on OzBargain!

Hotels & tourist resorts don't excite me. Real interactions & experiences do. Always seem to time my arrival for local festivals. People treated me so well, because I am interested in their lives. They invited me to stay in their homes & villages.

Had amazing & unforgettable experiences - that would never have happened if I paid a lot more!

Never did get around to go back to work🌴 Rather be Travelling😉

          • @INFIDEL: That sounds wonderful! 😎

            I think I’m a bit of a Hobbit at heart! 🙈

I think one of the reasons that flights are so cold these days is that airlines are increasing the flow of fresh air into planes to improve the ventilation so that pax are less likely to catch Covid. I flew Singapore Airlines recently and that was also really cold.

        • I don't think so.

Fresh air has always been brought into planes to achieve the set pressure. They use an intake valve and exhaust valve and open/close as needed to achieve the correct air pressure. Air pressure is a compromise between sea level air pressure and air pressure outside the plane. They don't make it the same as sea level as the strength of the materials would have to be stronger. This is why you have to clear your ears a little as the plane takes off.

If the plane simple achieved the above pressure by bringing in air to cabin, it would get too cold, so some of that air is piped through the engines to warm it up. It would just be a matter of putting more air through the engine to have it warmer - similar to warmer air in a car, divert more engine coolant through the heater core.

  • The London flight looks to be Ryanair from ath to London. So if one of your legs changes or is delayed good luck trying to complete the journey. It's not the same airline and these budget airlines won't just rebook you.

    • +2

Even if you miss the Ryanair flight I doubt new flights would be that expensive to rebook. Ryan has fares from 10GBP. And you can always go easyJet/Wizz.

The problem is flying all the way to Europe with no bags, no IFE, no meals or even blankets…

      • +3

Flew with AirAsia long ago to London $650 rtn with no bags, no IFE, no meals or even blankets… - no problems. Had a good rest.

Then flew around Europe on £1 & €1 Ryanair flights.

Advantage with only carry-on, it's so much easier & faster for transfers.
Connection in Stansted was tight. My Ryanair flight from Dublin was late in. Had to run for next Ryanair flight to Tour, France. Would have missed that flight & booking if had checked luggage!!

        I travel light & save. Scoot carry-on is 10kg.
Was a memorable experience - had such a great (cheap) trip.
But definitely not suited to all!!

        • +1

I have done similar trips and also have good things to say about AirAsia, all pre-pandemic of course. Can't wait to see them open up their full routes again.

The meals you can buy with them are decent enough by the way, pre-booking also saves a few $. I've splashed out a couple of times and upgraded to extra legroom seats with a couple of meals on top all for +$100ish. Was well worth it. Slept like a baby.

@wavesgreen: Miss their Nasi Lemak on flights.
Waiting for AA sales - have a voucher for cancelled flight in 2020. But t&c mean it won't easily reduce price.

            • @INFIDEL: Haha yep that's exactly the ones I was talking about. A seriously nice ready-to-eat nasi lemak, beats any I've had from any supermarket or anywhere for that matter. Really surprising quality for a low cost airline.

Sinks the truly garbage meals I've had served to me on Qantas long haul into the water.

          • @wavesgreen: AirAsia / AirAsia X is set to re-open in Australia within the next 3-months ;-)

      • +1

Even if you miss the Ryanair flight I doubt new flights would be that expensive to rebook. Ryan has fares from 10GBP. And you can always go easyJet/Wizz.

Last minute flights won't be 10 GBP. I've got the records of 1p 1 way from London to France way back. Booked it just for kicks.

Wizz is by far most restrictive on carry on. max. size 40 x 30 x 20 cm, 10 kg

Easyjet: 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including any handles or wheels) and needs to fit under the seat in front of you

        Ryanair: 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. Maximum Weight of Carry-on: 22 lbs (10 kg)

Don't get caught in an ambush bag check else it is a fee plus in the hold.

        • I've honed my carry-on only travel regime to a fine edge over the years. Soft backpack at max 7kg gets me on any plane no worries. The trick is one pair of shoes or a second pair that are lightweight collapsible (ie crushable) sneakers or slip-ons.

      • Yes, it has fares from 10 GBP (well, it's more like 40 on that route) but that's for flights 3 months away, if you want book because you're already at the airport you will pay 200+ EUR plus exorbitant baggage fees.

  • On a "very quick" check on the cheapest GC to London ($502), it would cost me almost an additional $1,200 to fly back home two weeks later.

    • I found similar recently looking to go MEL > ADL return on a VA sale.
The flight to ADL was $79 on a Friday (great!)
The cheapest return flight on Saturday/Sunday was $439…

Why would anyone go to Adelaide?

    • +1

That's OK - in my case. My travel is flexible.
I'm planning to travel around for months. My usual approach is to book return when it's cheap & I'm ready, or just travel somewhere else…

  • Anyone know if you earn Krisflyer miles flying with Scoot?

    • +1

      yeah but f all

      • But from Syd to London must be at least a few thousand miles right?

Saw the earn rate. 1 Kris per 1 SGD spend on Scoot which is bugger all.

  • +2

Remember, split tickets are a risk if your flight is cancelled or modified.

  • +3

    Melbourne to Berlin

    Cheapest is $470(bookings.beatthatflight.com.au) one way

    What a fun "flight" this is… 56 hrs 30 mins. Mel > Sin > Ath > Ber.

  • +1

What does it end up costing when you add checked baggage and a coupe of meals plus water?

    • +3

Not sure why I'm getting down voted, it was a genuine question. I looked into it and it's actually not bad, there is a package that seems to be about $150-200 from Melbourne to Europe that includes baggage and a meal. Probably still have to pay for some extras but usually budget airlines rip you off almost that much for baggage on a short flight.

      • +2

Not sure why you got downvoted either - it’s a legitimate question!

  • Are they unloading baggage in London yet?

  • +1

Wouldn't fly economy on Scoot but their Scootbiz flights to Singapore are often a steal. I frequently travel for a few hundred each way. Same seat as Jetstar's business class and comparable to Qantas/Virgin B737 business class seats.

This would mean a cheap, affordable business class seat to Europe for around the same price as an economy seat on a full fare airline.

  • Is food and wifi included? How much carry on are you allowed?

  • -2

dont care how cheap, HARD pass on SCOOT

    • Care to share your reasons at least?

  • +1

    Good deal.
Sharing my observation from my last trip from sin to syd.
I economy class there are only 4 or 5 cabin crew amongst 200 odd people.
Before boarding security thrown my water bottle.
I did not pre order meals but I recommend to pre order meals, as those are severed first then they bring trolley to sale the meals which took 3 hours before they came to my seat until then they did not even sale me water. I guess you get what you pay for. Still better than qantas where they charged you and provide poor service.
2 tips - get front seats & pre order meals.

    • +2

Before boarding security thrown my water bottle.

Just an FYI, you can take an empty water bottle with you past security in SIN. Plenty of water taps after it. Scoot fly out from gates D38-D42 in T2 which have 2 water taps, each outside of the toilets after security.

  • Are you able to leave your luggage at the airport on those huge 42 hour layovers and go into Singapore? As if you take luggage they'll be tagged straight through to europe?

    • +1

Yes there is luggage storage. The free early-check in you could use but it has been closed for 2 years now so your only option is to pay $20 at the storage space in Jewel

  • +1

Under $500 to London with Scoot or over $2000 with a known (reputable) airline. Big difference in price.

Do you need to bring your own seat with Scoot though? Lol.

    • Only if you are pilot…

    • Just a reminder that the ~$2000 tickets are return fares.

      • Yes, true but depends on which airline.

I had a quick look and roughly over $3000 ATM with Qatar for example in Sep.

    • You have to push start the plane.

  • Recently travelled from Mel to Singapore… Got some Apples.. Oranges.. Home made fries etc inside the handbag and a cover full of food sufficient for 3-4 ppl inside the airport and nonone said anything.. I did not buy even water from them…

  • I usually make sandwiches for these types of flights. But don't forget to leave leftover food on the plane.
I know someone that got a fine for forgetting to declare an uneaten chicken sandwich.

  • +1

Kudos to the people with mental fortitude to complete these flights. The vids of the food I've seen make me shiver. And the journey times with all the layovers are mammoth. My adhd can't sit for 14hrs +++ without some form of entertainment. Obvs this cheap for a reason but there needs to be a balance between cheap and living hell.

    • There is a balance and it is called Scoot.
It is cheap to live in Hell.

  • Scoot is my least favourite airline. Absolutely miserable on board and only really worth it if you’ve got no money or the alternatives are horrendously expensive.

What’s worse with this deal is that it includes a connecting flight with either Ryanair or easyjet. There is absolutely no way you would be doing any sort of connection like that in Europe at the moment. There’s a chance you’ll be having to rebuy your ticket due to a missed connection.

If you’re carrying luggage and travelling to Europe, Scoot is a poor choice.

    • +1

Yeah it really is if you are travelling light and are flexible. Which is the travel style I developed before the pandemic and I feel is even more applicable now.

But really a Scoot/easyjet itinerary has got to save several hundred dollars to be worth it because often Emirates/Etihad get me to the same place much more comfortably for only ~$200 more.

  • The most uncomfortable plane seats I've ever had. Price is great though so this will suit some

  • Hey, I can't really understand these "hack"instructions. How do you split a booking into two?

    • +1

if you click the links they're good examples. Instead of searching for MEL to LON, you're searching for say, MEL to Athens, and then Athens to London. Weirdly, that sometimes comes out cheaper.
