japan is not fun in summer

    • Why?

      • +4

        Very hot and humid

        • +2

          yeah its actually yuk.

best time is Feb to April tbh

          • @Wiadro: But it's expansive during that time tho..

            • @drhip: i paid $200 more for flights in 2024 during march with JAL

            • @drhip: It's an expAnsive place in general.

          • @Wiadro: How is mid May to early June?

      • +5

Extremely hot and humid, but can manage. Japan offers something for every season.
Anyways I'd avoid the Sakura weeks as I don't like queues :-)

    • +3

Disagree. Hokkaido is very nice in summer, but Tokyo and below is not.

      • +1

I was thinking the same thing.

I had been planning to take a visit to Osaka including a hike, visit to Kyoto, Kinosaki Onsen, Himeji, and Kobe. Basically eat a lot of nice foods, retrogame browsing, visiting game arcades, real life mario karting in the streets of Osaka, Universal Studios/SNW, a lot of scenery gazing, and train rides.

But I don't think I can be confident in taking the trip (i.e. be able to book flights) until after April and by the time discounted flights pop up, I think the Kansai region will be too hot to holiday at.

Hokkaido looks like a good alternative if I end up going in July/August.

        • +1

          Regarding the mario kart tours:

So…I used to work as one of the tour guides for over 2 years. (not a lot of people realize it's actually a tour, not just the tourists)

Honestly minor incidents happened on daily basis, people crashing into cars, road signs, dropping their phones, swerving, drifting etc. And the go-karts, as much as they try to maintain them, at the end of the day they're just 50cc two stroke engines made in China, and they broke down all the time (we actually always carried tools, spare spark plugs and a battery)

The worst story I have is when an Aussie tourist had a seizure in the middle of the road, resulting in him crashing into a post box. Thankfully a nurse was nearby and was able to help him. He got hospitalized for a couple of days I believe.

Looking back on it, I cannot believe nothing serious has ever happened to me, but trust me, those things aren't (profanity) safe at all.

Anyways, the company is shady, the carts aren't maintained, people can't drive and break the rules, it was a nightmare and I cannot believe nobody's dead yet.

          • +1

@GateauBoeuf: Not to mention the locals hate them.

          • @GateauBoeuf: Cheers for that.

Hmmm, maybe I should just buy a Switch and the latest Mario Kart… and go sit down at a cafe somewhere nice.

    • +2

      Yeha it's hot but manageable.

    • +1

it's alright, it's not terrible and i had a great trip during july. mostly anywhere in doors will be blasting nice aircon and doesn't feel any different to aussie summers, but i guess it also depends where you are and what you're doing. but yeah, taking a full train/bus during hot humid weather sucks, and it rains quite frequently, it's just something to plan around

    • Unless you travel to Hokkaido

    • Samui janai desu ne.

      Mr. Jaffray taught me well.

    • +1

Japan in summer is fine. If you are not stupid the heat and humidity are manageable. The main problem for the time of year is typhoon season.

    • It's hot and humid but no more than say Brisbane, and the summer festivals are great fun!

  • +2

Visited end of July last year. Extremely hot and humid, even late at night. Only enjoyable in the mountains (Nagano), but otherwise, would avoid major cities.

  • +3

Can you extend stopover in singapore?

    • Would also like to know this.

  • 3 weeks in August - won't be too bad right?

    • If you don't care about typhoon disruptions, it would be fine.

  • Bit off topic, but what's Japan like in early November? Too hot still or manageable by then?

    • +7

November is awesome. The autumn leaves look amazing. When I went in 2022, we had near-perfect weather for 12 days. Only rained on the last day in Osaka.

    • +5

Early November is an excellent time to visit. Generally mild temperatures but can be a bit chilly if you're in the north. Autumn colours around central Japan and generally not a peak travel time.

      • Sorry for asking for personal experiences instead of a Google Search! How dare I!

Maybe think before responding to someones comment as you come across as a dick.

        • -5

Does 34 degrees and humid magically feel different when in another country?

Who even said Japan is even hot in November lol, simple google would have told you otherwise already

          • +3

@TightAl: You're on a forum mate. It's the same as going 'Why don't you just Google for online deals?' the whole point is to ask for people's recommendations & share information.

Clearly you've got a lot of built up anger issues you should address first.

            • -4

@viperacr: You asked a very poor quality question because you were too lazy to do a 5 second search.
If you don't understand that, it's ok.

              • +1

@TightAl: And it’s obvious by your response people think you’re an idiot.

                • -3

@viperacr: it off topic, but what's Qld like in early November? Too cold still or manageable by then?
Maybe you'll realise with this :)

      • +1

Google also sells your data and scrapes it to train it's energy hungry ai.

    • I went mid-late November last year and it was a great time to go. Very pleasant temperatures around Honshu and crowds not too bad. Autumn leaves were a bit delayed last year, best period was more like late Nov to early December depending on location.

    • I went mid-November last year, and it was great. I was still able to wear shorts the whole time (in the cities I was often the only one but I get hot easily in long pants unless it's really cold out). Also I did a lot of walking. Last time I went it was mid-late June and quite humid, rained half the time I was in Osaka. Others have suggested Hokkaido for summer so I'd like to go there next time I have the opportunity. But yeah, from my experience November's really nice.

    15 hour layover? Wtf

    • +10

      No, its IWTF

      • lol

  • +1

Singapore Airlines website also had some Syd - Tokyo from ~July 28-31 to Mid-Late August (16-20something) for about $809 yesterday
Allows you to do a multicity stopover in SIN and book directly with airline to forego any name mishap shenanigens with 3rd parties

    +1 for Hokkaido in Summer.

  • Great price, shocking weather

  • +1

Was excite until I saw the dates, super moist in summer. I checked November out of interest, and its around 1.6k return

  • +2

People really overrate summer in Japan. I honestly think it’s mainly Melbourne folk who have never experienced what a normal summer is for the rest of the world. Is it hot? Yes. Is it humid? Yes. If you’ve been in summer to Europe, North America, anywhere north of Sydney, it’s really no different. I only travel to Japan in summer to escape Melbourne winter btw.

    • Japan is quite good for escaping the miserable winter here. It is only frustrating in typhoon season, which can come early due to hotter than average surface sea temperatures.

  • -3

Do you have deals to Vietnam?

  • Why are the dates always terrible?

    • They seem to avoid school holidays.

  • Late to book but wanting to plan a trip over easter, maybe 17th April - 28th April.

Anyone managed to find any deals for this time? (BNE) all that I am seeing are pretty jacked up which makes sense for the time of year

    • +1

I am late too, was checking last two days but nothing good to any of the major asian cities!! I already took the leave too, but have nothing planned!

      • Feeling the pain, I'll let you know if I find anything. Please do the same 🙂

  • whats the point of cheaper if its 15h layover, taking those extra time off costs more than the savings lol

    • +6

A long layover in singapore can be quite fun. I spent a day there (6am flight arrival, 14h layover) and roamed around gardens by the bay, the F1 track and hawker stalls before the next flight.

      Maybe not for everyone though.

  • Hobart gets a run but Canberra doesn't lol?

  • Why do you want to add another 6-7 hrs on top.

It's ok if you fly to Europe or south east Asia and have a stop over.

  • +1

Planning on a trip with my teen kids to Japan this year and was looking at late nov depart(after year 12 exams) for about 10 days. Would be our first trip overseas. I've been trying to work out if that time of year was the best option as I'd been watching some YouTube vids that seem to indicate that it gets colder towards that time. Seems a few comments above suggest it's a decent time to go. Am I better off holding off until early 2026 for nicer weather? Seems people suggest Feb to April is good? Being the first time I've had to arrange a OS trip for nearly 20 years it all seems quite daunting. Does ozbargains have a way of searching what deals/prices have been had at certain times of the year?

We were originally looking at a stopover in Hong Kong for family reasons but they will have come back to aus by then so we're considering Singapore as my youngest would love to see the city. Having a hard time working out of you can actually stop over in Singapore for a few days with these deals. Seems a few people have asked above but no one seems to know. Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Is KIX a good stop? Is it easy to get to Tokyo, Hokkaido, Osaka?

    • KIX is Osaka (well more or less, an hour to central Osaka via the Haruka).

Flight-wise, yes, has connections to all the other major cities.

  • How to stay longer in Singapore?
