Includes Sodaking carbonating machine in white, one 60L CO2 cylinder and a 1L bottle (free delivery with Prime).

Probably not a historical low, but was looking for another CO2 cylinder and 1L bottle, so after seeing the Spotlight deal for 60L Sodaking CO2 cylinders ($14 refill or $25.90 new filled CO2 cylinder) did a bit of a search.

1L bottle is worth about $5, plus $25.90 for the CO2 cylinder and that makes the difference about $15 for the dispenser machine.

Previously paid ~$60 for the same components in a Sodastream kit, so a bit cheaper than that.

Anyone notice that the gas tastes funny from both brands?

      Username checks out.

  • This is Sodastream? I want to buy my first one.

    • Different brand and ecosystem, same principle.

I think the gas cylinders are compatible

        • -2

Yes they are, and they both taste funny these days. Impurities in the gas?

@SoylentGreen: Refill myself from BOC 6kg food grade CO2 cylinder with Kegland adaptor.

Can't say I've noticed any taste from either Sodastream or Sodaking CO2 cylinders after I refill them.

Would be checking the seals on the dispenser, cylinders and bottles to make sure there is nothing funky growing that could influence taste.

            • @opposablethumbs: Yep same here with a 2.6kg bottle which is about 7 times bigger than a Sodastream canister. Costs $25 to refill.

            • @opposablethumbs: Doing this myself (after reading others on OzB). The newer SS bottles are a PITA to refill, so I got one of the Kegland small cylinders too which are a lot easier.

            • @opposablethumbs: Hey mate - got a link to the specific kegland adaptor you use?

I've got a few Sodastream bottles already, but long term was thinking the D-Plan 6KG Bottle is worth it for me as I drink a lot of Soda water.

  • thanks op - anyone know any reason to go for sodastream over this?

I’d go for SodaKing as it’s Aussie made, whereas Sodastream I believe is made in Israel.

      • No, it is China made. Only the flavoured drinks syrup are Australia made

    • Depends on your styling /decor needs, but if you don't care about what it looks like on your bench then just go the cheaper, its just a means to the same end.
That said, the soda king bottles are useless in sodastream, not sealing correctly when bubbling.

I think Sodastream are better made. I had a Soda King for years, wanting to promote Aus made and cause of the weirdness with the Sodastream factory location.
Soda King for me would often leak water, and the last straw was getting a refill that seemed to leak away overnight. I gave up and bought a Source Element, which is sometimes on sale for $90. No leaks and the bottle doesn't need to be screwed in. Plus the Sodastream brand bottles are at way more stores.

      • It is on sale for $89 right now and the Hydration pack for $129.

  • No $14 refill near me, out of stock

Link for the Spotlight Sodaking items on sale. 2 x 1L bottles for $10.50 is a pretty decent deal.

  • I dont like SodaKING i prefer Sodastream.
Different models may very but my SS is screw in to hold the bottle which is a pain and fiddly. Also i read that my SS should fit but they dont.

    • I have a Sodastream Jet (screw-in) dispenser and have had no problem with either SS or Soda King cylinders.

      YMMV.

Keep an eye on the coles special buys too. I've seen their own brand and Philips brand machines as low as $20 a few weeks after being on catalogue

Don't wash the bottles on high heat in the dishwasher. Wise words 😸. I lost 3 bottles to the dishwasher

    • +1

They usually say on the bottle not to put in the dishwasher, though apparently the newest SS ones are safe.

Just saying, why do you wash your bottles at all?

We just do water in them, then add any extras to our cups. Then leave the bottles to dry. Never had any issues unless they are left slightly damp with the lids on, I which case they'll get a little musty but just need another rinse before refilling.

Or is it commonplace to add cordials in these bottles after fizzing?

The bottles all have expiry dates, I noticed, being pressure rated.

Mineral builds similar to your shower screen if you don't scrub it. If you put your used bottles next to a new one you'll notice the difference in build up. Putting it in dishwasher will restore them to a new state.
