Why Can We See Who "up" Votes but Not Who Negs Comments?

I've tried to rationalise the possible reasons for this but I've never understood it.

Can the mod team or any one else she'd some light on this? I'm happy to be proved wrong but it doesn't make sense to me.

It flies counter to giving a justified reason every time you neg a deal.

If it makes it any better, it's all worthless internet points…not even remotely useful/ holding value like getting tipped in Moons or Doge on Reddit…

fwiw this has been covered many times, the one response i could easily find is from mod @neil here
Short of it is visible negs promote in-fighting within the community.

    • +10

      bahahahah check out the neg

    • +3

      in-fighting

We are all random strangers remember? We aren't the ALP or LNP…

    • Perfectly summed that one up..

    • +4

that said, I'm less interested in the who rather than the why.

Just because I know the who doesn't help me in say, understanding what I said wrong or misunderstood to deserve the neg. Knowing the 'who' only brings out the pettiness in me to want to revenge-neg them. Knowing the 'why' could hopefully help me correct my ways, if rightfully so.

      • +5

You presume that people have a "why"…. some just want to watch the world burn.

    • +6

I just negged you, please neg me

      • -7

        Nah

      • +4

why am i being upvoted i need negs negs negs…

    • Short of it is visible negs promote in-fighting within the community.

Much better to promote cowardly bullying instead huh?

And yes it matters when it affects the visibility of your comment.

  • +29

Hmm….. perhaps just stop showing who upvoted and keep it all anonymous. That might address the anxiety.

    • It seem rather difficult to be vengeful if people upvoted… or is it?

      • +4

Indeed… but removing the upvote info might alleviate OP's concern for disparity

      • -1

If OP is from the upside down (Stranger Things), a positive vote would be negative

        • … It'd be good to see who negged! :p

(-2 at time of post, although added +1 back)

  • Negative comment votes were visible in the past (as a trial) and it resulted in a lot more user fights.

    • -7

and it resulted in a lot more user fights.

      More user engagement and discussion.

      • +3

Until hosts started being held liable for the comments of their users.

      • +3

        More user engagement and discussion

        Exactly the opposite.
Repetitive negatives sent those comments into oblivion, hidden, discouraging dialog and encouraging dogmatic speech.

It is more like "I don't want to read your version of the truth", hence massive negs.

    • +1

      can mods see who negg'ed?

    • +1

I can totally see that happening lol

    • +6

"resulted in a lot more user fights."

You make it sound like a bad thing.. haha

      • +10

Your making it sound like they are a bunch of kids or something.

Well, most can't use their words and just go for the neg button. So yes, bunch of kids

        Also, "You're"

        • Well, most can't use their words and just go for the neg button. So yes, bunch of kids

Finally, we see eye to eye on something.
Having said that, people would be measured with their negs if they were to be made transparent for everyone to see..

          Also, "You're"

          Okay,

          • @Gervais fanboy:

Having said that, people would be measured with their negs if they were to be made transparent for everyone to see..

Some would see more negs as a positive…

          • @spackbace: I've been in the sin-bin myself a few times but each time I was like … Yeah, nah, that's fair at least

      • or something.

The something being 'the only known conscious entity, with limited knowledge of the tone a comment would have been vocalised in; the colouration, scent stance (Although I think seated would be the best guess) and expressions of the other participants in the discussion.

"Why didn't you like my comment" hardly contributes to a discussion regarding the deal,

    • +5

      Why can't I neg this?

      • +3

When they post with the Moderator tag, it's not vote-able, it's to prevent in-fighting…

        • but that's my favourite kind of fighting !

      • It's a subliminal way of teaching the culturally deprived about irony without insulting them.

    • +1

I was going to neg your comment as a joke, but I see voting on moderator comments are disabled.

    • @scrimshaw Have you guys experimented with "dynamic comments" ?

Basically if a comment gets too many negative votes (eg -11) it gets collapsed, and if you want to view it, you have to click the [ + ] button to expand it. Thus saves a lot on clutter inside the thread. If it gets lots of negative votes and lots of positive votes, it gets partially hidden (eg only two lines visible) and also can be expanded, again saving clutter. And if a comment gets many positive votes and little/none negative votes, it gets highlighted and bumped higher on the comments tree.

This used to be a popular way of structuring forums, and comment hierarchy, around the (2006-2013) late-00's era…. it all but disappeared 2015 and beyond. Biggest reason why it disappeared was that it promoted freedom, contrary to site-owners who wanted to exert more control, simply to increase their revenue from their advertising policies.

too much revenge negging, but it would be interesting to see how many people would stop negging altogether once they lost the shield of anonymity.

      • +2

I don’t know who the culprits are but I suspect they don’t like your comment…

        • +2

They don’t like much in life anyways…

Constantly triggered and spamming the dislike/report button like there’s no tomorrow.

          • +3

@Gervais fanboy: Comments a dozen times, claims it's everybody else who's "constantly triggered"

    Ah
The wonders of Ozbargain upvoting rules.
I'm forever questioning the negative votes on deals and why you need to comment beforehand.
Also the fact you cant go back to the post after 30 days if it turned out to be a scam.

    • +7

Also the fact you cant go back to the post after 30 days if it turned out to be a scam.

Click Report > Other > "Please unlock post so I can comment, thanks"

Shortly after, you will receive a message stating it has been unlocked. It will then lock again after 30 days of no activity.

      • +5

        Still
It's a hoop that has to be jumped through

      • Shortly after,

        I presume it's minutes/hours, not milliseconds (automatic)?

        • Correct, it's a manual process by the mods (to eliminate spam / un-needed necro comments as mentioned by neil below).

    • Great point…

    • I'm forever questioning the negative votes on deals and why you need to comment beforehand.

      We're forever explaining it. :)

      Voting Guidelines

      Positive Vote=Good Deal
No Vote = Meh Deal, Not interested. Pretend there is an invisible button called Meh.
Negative Vote = Issue with Deal, Cheaper Elsewhere

You should explain the issue which in turn should help the community. e.g. buy it cheaper here, there is an issue with company or product so let me explain

Also the fact you cant go back to the post after 30 days if it turned out to be a scam.

To add to rompa's comment, commenting closes after I think 14 days after the last comment, to reduce comment spam and necrocomments.

      • +1

        Yeah I get that
Just I don't really agree with the fact you have to jump through hoops to leave a negative vote

        • Should constructing a single sentence really be described as having to "jump through hoops"?

      • +1

Pretty clear they meant the rule around commenting for a neg vote, and making sense of the logic behind that decision.

        • There are no guidelines for negative voting a comment. There are guidelines for negative voting a deal. I think perhaps that was the point being made?

      • -5

Commenting and voting should cease after the deal expires.

        • +4

I don't agree with this idea. Discussion on both the delivery experience and usage of an item after the deal ends is value add, and is useful to be referenced when subsequent deals are posted.

      • Negative Vote = Issue with Deal

This is wrong. If there is an "issue with the deal" (code wot working/bad URL/not until 4pm/etc…) "use the report button"… (an example of that can be found here where there was an "issue with the deal" (code didn't work) and people negged because of this issue. ALL of these negs were subsequently removed and a comment "Use the Report Button.")

Neg voting is if there is an "issue with the product" (it kills people or is recalled) or there is an "issue with the retailer" (ie: they are a scammer/previous scumbaggery) or "Cheaper Elsewhere"

How are we expected to get it right when an Admin cant… :P

        • Issue with deal= Cheaper elsewhere, issue with product, issue with retailer etc. I just shortened it for brevity in my comment but I can see how that was confusing.

Voting Guidelines is always the best reference.

    • +3

100% agree re commenting for a neg deal vote.
I hate the fact that you need to comment to downvote a deal. BUT then if people neg vote your comment IT REMOVES YOUR DOWNVOTE ON THE DEAL ITSELF. It's so stupid. Happened the other day to me and my comment was only downvoted by 7. Just silly coz it means that the group can wipe an individual's opinion of a deal (when it's negative only).

      • +4

Geez didn't know that, sounds a bit rough

Yeah would definitely like to see this re-addressed

        • I'm assuming that's why my deal downvote was removed last week. It was the dealpost for the VR headset when doing a research study. Just checked my notifications and can confirm I was advised by mods that my downvote was removed due to my comment having too many negs…7.

          • +2

@cookie2: If people agree with your reason or faced the same issue as you they can upvote. If lots of people negging and no one up voting it is probably a bad reason to down vote the deal and your vote should be removed.

            • +1

              @Quantumcat:

If lots of people negging and no one up voting it is probably a bad reason to down vote the deal and your vote should be removed.

              But for a few exceptions
Like that daily wire subscription deal. It was cheaper for a time period and hence technically a deal.

But people still down voted that deal and some comment alike because of their ideological/political differences.

            • +1

@Quantumcat: At the end of the day, upvote or downvote, it's just opinion. As long as the reason for the downvote, is in line with OzB guidelines, it shouldn't be removed if others don't agree.

              • @cookie2: A neg vote on a deal will be removed if the associated comment gets 7 or 8 negs.

      • +1

        was only downvoted by 7.

Nope, you're at 9 negs total and it only took 8 to remove your neg. Actually takes some effort to get that for a normal comment.

In this case, 9 members of the community disagreed with you

      • BUT then if people neg vote your comment IT REMOVES YOUR DOWNVOTE ON THE DEAL ITSELF. It's so stupid

I disagree. Two of my posts yesterday were negged because the deal had expired - that's an improper use of the neg vote. Plus the number of times people outright lie in their negs.

        • Agree, people also neg due to "Bad experiences previously with the company". Despite it occurring year ago, and it is resolved.

      • BUT then if people neg vote your comment IT REMOVES YOUR DOWNVOTE ON THE DEAL ITSELF. It's so stupid.

Wow! I wasn't aware. There must have been some major events which led to the current state where it's extremely hard to neg any post.

    • -1

You need to comment so the mods can remove your neg because your reasoning isn't good enough.

      • +1

According to the mods you can have any reason you want as long as it’s not on the list of invalid reasons.

        • +2

Any colour, so long as it's black.

  • +8

I think I have my own personal negative voter who votes on almost every comment I write. They even voted negative when I indicated I had won a small prize on a competition post. At some point in time I clearly upset them. No skin off my nose, but they still waste their time to do it.

    • +1

      Hahahah

I am sorry but that’s just so funny.
Seems like he got you again btw.

    • You've got free real estate in their minds 😂

    • +1

Lol I had that at some point, was definitely amusing

    • -2

Bored and can't sleep, so I stalked you a little. Negging you for saying 'Thank you' and for answering someone's question. They've really gotten their knickers in a twist about something. Did you pee in anyone's cornflakes lately?

  • +1

So nerds don't take it personally and start trying to get back at people who have negged them.
