AGL Quarterly Gas Bill up by $115 - How about You?

I've been dreading getting the next utility bills and it finally came. Despite no usage increase compared to last quarter it's gone up by $115, with AGL. The bill also shows that my usage comes in way under the average single person home, and we're a family of 4.

How are you doing with other providers?

Up by (only) $115? Sounds like you got a discount!

    • Yeah im going to be very stoked if mine is only $115 more than last year haha

      • So I guess you're not with AGL then????

What went up for a lot of people? The daily supply charge or the kWh rate?

    Or both…

    • My supply charge dropped a bit but my kWh went up

You guys talking about electricity. OP talking about gas which is in MJ I thought?

        • Sorry yeah I'm hijacking this thread. Electricity

      • Both of mine went up while solar tariff dropped, ausnet

    What's your new tariffs like?

Doesn't sound right if your usage hasn't changed & 'usage comes in way under the average single person home'

I switched from AGL to Tango last month when AGL

Here's my new rates (for Winter)

    Season 1: May October
    First 0 50 MJ per day c/MJ 1.947
    Next 50 100 MJ per day c/MJ 1.782
    Next 100 150 MJ per day c/MJ 1.595
    Next 150 250 MJ per day c/MJ 1.463
    After 250 MJ per day c/MJ 1.309

AGL was about 5-10% more expensive after AGL increased their tariffs.

I'm a heavy user of gas so it was worthwhile for me to switch.

  • I think I may have posted a bit prematurely. Looking closer at my current and prior bills it seems that the increase in cost is because of "Peak season 1 Jun 22 to 15 Jul 22" being added which is $0.03014 per MJ compared to $0.02596 for "Off peak season".

Looking back at last year's bill for this period the "Peak season" cost was $0.0286 per MJ so I think that's where the higher cost has come from. Supply charge was $9 more.

(Small note also: credit card fee went up 2c.)

    • Which city you in?

Your tariffs are significantly higher than mine (Victoria- Multinet Gas Network). See above

          You're getting shafted.

    • Can't you pay direct debit to avoid the CC fee? I've done this with any company that charges the CC fee.

      • +1

Yes, but am not concerned about $1 a year.

        • +2

Pay via Paypal with linked AMEX (or other CC). No fees + points. AGL does not charge for Paypal payments

Question was why you stick with AGL, Vic mostly go with 2 month billing cycle, wasn't yours the same? Paying 3c per mj is a lot even for winter peak. My gas rates with ausnet has always been around 2c per mj for years and i shop around every winter. If it goes up above 3c I will ditch gas completely and gets another split in the kitchen to get the whole house covered.

I'm in Melbourne, pricing from AGL is always the worst. The 'free' service for utilitiy switching service when you move home (can't remember their name) is commissioned by AGL and they connect people with AGL by default and won't connect you with anyone else. This works really well for AGL for many people don't really care about the energy tariff.

    From Globird
    Winter Step 1: 0.02068/MJ
    Winter Step 2: 0.01595/MJ
    Daily Charge: 0.572
    3% off for direct debit.

Check out https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/ if you haven't already.
Also get yourself $250 too in case you haven't done it yet.

    • Wait, why is yours so affordable? Mine is

Daily Charge $1.21, Peak $0.473/kWh, Offpeak $.2893/kWh, Controlled Load $.288/kWh

      • MJ vs kWh

      • Lmao

        • I posted then realised facepalm

Sometimes I wished I did some electronics courses for my minor

    • I did the compare thing and it didn't return much of a saving for me. AGL came out best with $10 cheaper. The system scanned my PDF bill to determine this. Amazing stuff.

Did you know people in WA are getting $400!!!

  • GloBird $10 a day for a 2BR in Western Victoria. Beat that.

  • Geez all these rates look like a bargain to me. Here's my rates in SYdney:

    Usage Charges
    Peak Usage 0-21
    3.99 c/MJ
    Peak Usage 21-2745
    2.63 c/MJ
    Peak Usage 2745+
    2.35 c/MJ

That said it still only runs to ~$150 per quarter

      Jesus that’s high.

No wonder people in NSW try to use anything but gas.

In Vic gas still makes sense.

My gas heating is cheaper than my RC air conditioning. Much nicer Heat too.

My tariffs is nearly half of yours
      Season 1: May October
      First 0 50 MJ per day c/MJ 1.947
      Next 50 100 MJ per day c/MJ 1.782
      Next 100 150 MJ per day c/MJ 1.595
      Next 150 250 MJ per day c/MJ 1.463
      After 250 MJ per day c/MJ 1.309

      • I'm still happy to have it for the convenience of gas stovetop and also continuous flow gas hot water with temperature controller.

BTW those were including the % discount on a plan; standard price is about 10% higher than that.

  • Be thankful you have gas. Spare a thought for those in Europe who will freeze in winter, literally, because their government turned off the nuclear plants at the same time as putting sanctions on their main gas supplier.
We in the west will soon realise how much energy should cost (and also water if ppl keep having kids).

You all know that the Japanese (mod: removed slur) get our gas (including shipping cost) for less than we do, yeah?
We are the stupidest country on the face of the planet.

    • +2

That sounds similar to how I've heard that we export so much of our meat which leads to higher prices for us as there's less to go around.

    • +1

Yeah, Japanese government only allow export of their old stuffs and Australian government doing the exact opposite. What a brilliant bunch of public servants…

  • No change. We are good in WA.
