  • just called store and all out of stock

  • Won't be getting any new firmware updates either from Google

    • What makes you say this? Discontinued?

      • +3

Android Things was discontinued as a platform at start of this year.

Every non-Google smart display isn't receiving any more firmware updates. Google displays are being upgraded to their own Fuchsia OS and updates are still being provided.

  • I would like one for that price. Wait and see I guess.

  • I've had the first Lenovo Smart Clock for 2.5 years now and it restarts every few hours or so. I had a few missed alarms early on, the same will happen if your wifi is out!

    • Check your router smart connect setting… Should be off

      • I don't really want to turn band steering off, if that's what you mean? That way 2.4/5GHz switching is automatic for other devices. Wifi dropouts are now just for a few seconds at a time anyway. I had a different router before with the same restart issues - it seems unrelated to internet, the device completely reboots.

Has to be a defect considering how many complained online.

I have this version 2 for free from Lenovo and guess what, it randomly reboots too. I only have it for about a month…

          • @meong: How disappointing. Wish there were other Google-powered smart clocks in this price range. The bugs have reduced since 2019 for sure.

            • @Techie4066: They're only cheap cause they're being discontinued 😅

        • +2

As a contrasting experience; I have 3 of the original Lenovo Smart Clocks since they came out. Never had any issue with them rebooting or losing WiFi connection unexpectedly. Alarms have always been reliable.

@airtime: In that case google smart home software or Lenovo QC needs fixing to not be so temperamental for some users.

Nothing against the deal, but surely it can't just be me that finds this device quite useless?

    • +2

Its usefulness relies on how much google ecosystem you have in your house, I have 3 globes as part of a package from a whole back and being able to control them with my alarm clock is nice. If you are buying this to be a clock alone consider it a clock with some very average bluetooth speaker capabilities.

    • I got this for free so i didn't have much hope to begin with but i thought id integrate with Eufy and apparently google display integration with non google cameras are so slow that the delays can be up to 20 seconds.

Speaker and microphone is really good though for its size. Wireless charging also shows as fast charging on my S20+.

Other than that, yeah i really have no idea what this device can be used for… Maybe a Spotify white noise player? Cause when you say good night to it it can do certain tasks for you like automatically play the sleeping playlist etc.

It has a night light but you can't turn it on by using voice which is such a missed opportunity.

I find it ok. Backup alarm to my phone. Wakes me up with the news and light. Easy to play the radio before bed. Tells me the weather forecast. I find it pretty decent.

We have one in our bedroom. Works well as:
      - Replacement bedside clock. Autodimmiing is great at night, alarm works well as does the sunrise alarm (surprisingly good)
      - Wife playing music in bedroom/house (easy to link multiple devices)
      - Turning off/controlling lights in the house (including closing the garage door if me/wife/kids have left it open)

I havent had any problems with mine, but YMMV

Good gadget for those who drive Tesla and want to save car battery

    • +6

Wait, maybe im stupid, but what has the Smart Clock got to do with Teslas?

      • It's much safer than Tesla & saves not only the battery but your life if you do most of the commands from your bed (the road is too dangerous ;)

    • This is cool, I wonder how the author is able to create this, scrap the ow page? Hm…

  • I have it and got it for $12 + 30k points via Telstra Plus. Pretty decent and nice to play some baby lullabies to put baby to sleep and charge phone without trying to fiddle with a cable. If you just want basic okay google to play something and look at time and charging, go for it. Not sure what you will get with new firmware updates.
