Why would you be fearful of mixing unleaded fuels of different RON ratings? They're all long chain hydrocarbons, the difference is the approximate proportion of specific hydrocarbons such as heptane and isooctane, along with the inclusion of additives, both of which affect how much compression the fuel can undergo within the cylinder and how much engine knock you get. That's the only thing that differentiates different octane levels in fuel, it's still the same slurry of hydrocarbons. It's completely safe to mix, for example, ULP91 fuel with ULP98 fuel; you'd simply end up with fuel that has an octane rating somewhere in between the two.

That said, unless you drive performance cars which require higher octane ratings to prevent engine knocking (e.g. various turbocharged cars or naturally aspirated V8 cars), or drive a car with a Mazda Skyactiv engine (which automatically self-adapts timing depending on the fuel it is given), filling up a car with "better" fuel is a waste of money. Higher RON rating fuel doesn't give you "denser energy" or "more travel distance" like many assume, it's purely to prevent engine knock in specific cars. Sure, there may be additional detergent additives that may slightly clean up carbon build-up in some fuel types, but the difference will be negligible in a typical econobox car, and the supposed benefits are overstated by promotional advertising for these fuels.

      • The additional fuel range you'd be seeing going from 91-95 would be in the realms of a maximum of 5%, sadly we're in the time where potentially paying this extra is "almost" worth it, as long as the difference in price remains at a constant 10cpl. I am not aware of any potential scenario where paying for the next step up to 98 would be financially worth it

      • Never knew Skyactiv engine benefit from higher octane ratings!!

I was told CX-5's compression ratio in Aus is lower than Japan and Euro (13.1 vs 14.1) to accommodate ULP91 & E10.

Dont think I can afford ULP98 now days… probably switch to ULP95 from now on.

    • If you fill up with 95 it's literally just 91 and 98 mixed together at the pump…

    • dumbest thing i’ve read today

  • I took a screenshot of my fuel lock and haven't yet used it. Will it work?

    • +2

Won’t work. It is the bar code of your membership is what you scan

      • Oh well, fair enough.

        • I’ve got a screenshot too. I’m gonna give it a go and let folks know.🤞

          • @Jfree: I wouldn't bother, unless you really need the fuel. It's not going to work, and prices will come down over the next 2 weeks.

            • +1

              @prhino: No didn’t work out 😕

  • +2

    Bloody cancel culture!

  • -7

I left one star on the play store.. My way of letting them know how pissed their app users are..

It wasnt price error, the price was displayed on the servo yday. They decided to not honour the price lock, they get one star.

    • +15

I left one star on the play store

      That'll show them!

    • -3

Why negged? Are these ppl 7-Eleven employees? Offended? 😂

      • +3

Because its childish to leave a poor review after your hack has been closed after many years of saving money.

        • Surely someone got offended.. Lol
If I saved money with the hack, they made money by having my business. You think they dont know about the hack? It was/is win win for both.

What they did today wasnt right. They took off the lock from all accounts, even from the legit ones (users living in that suburb)

Childish? Haha.. Play store ratings are for that reason. If the app users are happy or unhappy they leave the feedback. Thats what I did. Lock feature didn't work.

          • @Skyisblue: Yes, childish.
You left a one star review of their perfectly OK app as a childish reaction when the hack that has saved you so much was finally closed. It was never your right, nothing has been taken from you, in fact it was you who was doing the taking.

            • -2

@King Tightarse: Lock, a feature of the app didnt stay for 7 days (as advertised) . App got the rating it deserves.

              • +1

@Skyisblue: You used it against the T&C . Of course they don't have to honour that. Everyone had an excellent run with the 'chopper' and saved so much money. Leaving a 1 start review after all that saved money is just childish.
                That's why people negged you

                • +1

@King Tightarse: And how you know i breached the TnC? Lol

Like I said, they didnt honour the lock for all users. they didnt check if you or others have breached TnC.

If ppl used chopper and saved money, 7 eleven got their business. No charity here

                  • @Skyisblue: Yes every time we use mock locations we are breaching the T&C. Der

"If I saved money with the hack" Lol"
                    Just childish

                    • @King Tightarse: There is a big 'If' at the start of the sentence. Would you like to read that again?

                      • @Skyisblue: Oh now are you now pretending to suggest that you never used the fuel lock hack?
Silly me I didn't realize that you were a bullshitter too…
                        So childish

                        • +1

@King Tightarse: Name calling? Nice.. Lol..

Register this in your brain- App didnt do what it was suppose to do. I left the rating. Simple as that.

                          Good night

                          • +2

                            @Skyisblue: Oh I seeeeeeeeee.
You left the 1 star rating rating because you live in or near Wantirna and have never taken advantage of the OzBargain 711 hack and you were simply outraged. We should ignore your Sydney location because that is a typo
                            Sounds completely plausible. 👌

                      • +4

There is a big 'If' at the start of the sentence.

Not if. You have been faking your location for a while now

@[Deactivated]: Mr. Sherlock, not my chopper.

And dont tell me, "my account"..

And they decided to take away lock price today cause of that

  • +2

What did you expect to happen, may as delete the threads on this website before they remove it all together

  • -1

LMAO… I was too greedy I suppose!!! Could've filled up yesterday night.

Instead, planned to wait for family members to come over on the weekend, bring our cars there and PUMP full tank for all cars in one go (under 150L ofc).

Wasn't meant to be eh!!! RIP the dream… :'(

    • +3

Don't feel too bad, this is the first ever time they've remove a fuel lock like this.

I've also been caught out by this, but we didn't lose much anyways.

      • Good point. Let's hope they take some flack from this and don't do it again. Perhaps they need to look at some limiting in their app as well. So if you can be at the pump great, but a fuel lock can only ever be x% lower than the greater sum of others combined.

  • -1

Got mine cancelled too. Some of us helped others locking in which was way too many for 7 Eleven to honour. They saw this thread and took action.

    • Thanks for the intel

    • +1

Sooks thumbing down, entitled bunch that don't realise this could be the end.

  • Dang, did the choppa but had no time so didn’t get to fill. Should have prioritized 😭

  • +4

    https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/customers-disappoin…

Only thing she didn't mention was 'customers jumped in their choppers…'

  • Filled up a full tank of 65L u91 for $87 in Melbourne this morning on the way to the office. Saved over $60 as the normal price was $2.28 per litre!

Still bloody mad that my other fuel locked accounts got cancelled, but 5mins effort for $60 savings. Not bad.

  • +14

I bet most of us wait till the last drop left in the car before refuel to maximise the benefit…
Ouch… Lesson learnt, if it's too good to be true, usually it is

    • +1

I usually do, but had to take my old man to airport today so filled up last night after dinner. Got lucky there!

    • +3

haha i was in the lucky boat that my car was already on the blinkers and just reached 0km by the time i made it to a 7-11.

Managed to fit 62L u98 into my car and got a nice $60 off with the coupon.

      • +1

holy crap, the remaining estimate was actually 0km? that's ballsy as — lowest I've gotten is probably only around 30km

        • +2

depends on what car you drive, if its a holden or a ford then you're probably already running on fumes. if you're running on a mazda or a toyota etc you get another 50+km still

        • I almost always get to 0KM with my 350z. In fact so low that it can't calculate how much is left.

    • +1

I do a Kramer and see how far I can get, push the rest of the way.

      • +1

Yeah I think people don't realise if you run out of fuel it's not the end of the world. You can always get out and push. Takes a bit of the thrill away knowing this however.

  • How does money actually flow through 7-11. Isn't 7-11 just a convenience store company. The fuel is Exxon mobil right. The actual stations are usually franchisees right. Who sets the prices? Who pays for the fuel lock?

    • +2

^ thoughts I had whilst hating myself for not using fuel lock immediately

    • Headquarters reimburses the difference. Source: someone posted an employee AMA few years back

      • Ahhhh thanks …… big question answered there. So those who partake in chopper activities are indeed effecting 'corporate' as opposed to the franchise operator. Well, that's kinda a good thing then. :)

    • +1

7-Eleven foots the bill for the price locks.
Source: Spoke to the 7-Eleven employee while paying.

  • +11

They are lucky this is Australia. If this happened in US, riots would occur and every 7-11 store would have been looted and torched.

    • +5

Good point. In Australia we get upset and move on.

      • +2

Resulting australia getting bullied around by power countries and rich companies getting richer..
while small people hate fight each other

  • +2

I sprinted to the petrol station last night as soon as I heard they had disabled locking (I had locked in earlier in the day). Worked for me then. Was empty and was heading away for a wedding on the weekend so worked out well.

    • Interesting…. was your lock from Wantirna or another location?

    • +1

Dont feel lucky as your account may be banned later.

      • +1

lol it’s not like he paid for a year subscription haha!

They can ban his account all they want!

Takes 1 min to create a new account lol!

        • +1

The issue is that if you have linked VFF membership to the banned account, you cant link it to a new account.

          • +2

@Neoika: You can just scan the VFF barcode separately to your 7/11 account. I still claim the points when I use my side piece accounts.

            • @daanish: Do u still get the bonus points eg for premium fuel or VFF offers?

              • @Sweetnsour: I've never filled premium fuel so I don't know. I'm also guessing that they VFF offers are paid since I'm pretty sure they are activated at the VFF end not via 7/11 app.

            • @daanish: Yes, you are right. It is not necessary to use the App, but maybe you can double dip? What if you use two different memberships?

              • @Neoika: Give it a try and let the community know?

                • @daanish: 7 11 is not my 1st choice. I rarely go there.

    • -1

      ShXt show!

  • Dammit

    Why can’t we neg ?!?

  • +2

I blur blur drove to 7-11, filled up my tank, walked in to pay and….. “where is my fuel lock ?!?!?!?!?!” 😓😭🤯

    • -4

And you happily paid the full price? If I were you I would only offer to pay at the locked price. If they refused to take it, I would give them my billing details and ask them to bill me the correct amount rather than paying the pump price on the spot. It is much easier to get hold of them when they need to get money from you rather than the other way round.

      • +4

Lmao what, they probably would have called the police, you can’t bargain a 7/11 attendant!

        • -6

If you just run away that is a criminal offence. If you disagree with the amount to pay and leave your contact details, that is a civil dispute. What do you think the Police can do about civil disputes? They need to take you to court to force you to pay the full price, do you think the judge is going to side with 711? And imagine all the negative publicity it will cause for 711, no sane company will try to do that.

          • @truetypezk: This is why I'm so happy I don't work in retail. Or own a business…

            • -1

@forrester: I thought a better takeaway would be if I were to work in retail I would honour vouchers/discounts as originally promised?

        • -7

Btw I have dealt with similar situations where a business refuses to accept a legitimate voucher (on products that can't be easily returned, such as food). I always told them I only agree to pay the discounted amount on the spot, and if they didn't want to take my money then feel free to bill me later and chase up the money from me via legitimate means. They always gave in at the end to avoid the hassles.

Of course we all know that 711 attendants don't actually have the authority to price override even if they want to help, so this is just to make sure that someone at the HQ actually bothers to contact you (there is a high chance that they won't even bother) regarding the issue. If you paid on the spot and contact them for help later, it would be at their mercy to get back to you.

Finally, if you don't like to be too confrontational, just pay with a credit card, keep all the documents/chargeslips/vouchers and do a chargeback later. Most likely you will be able to get the discount original promised.

      • +4

I would give them my billing details and ask them to bill me the correct amount rather than paying the pump price on the spot

        And then everybody clapped……

      • +4

        Okay Karen.

  • Hey guys,

There used to be a website that would lock in 7/11 fuel prices for you, all you had to do was buy their membership on a weekly/monthly basis..
But i can’t seem to remember the name of that website..
Does anyone here know the website that I might be referring to ??

    • +3

      https://petrolbargain.com/
Better to install 3utools on your pc and use your iphone to lock it.

      • Thank you so much for that…

Better to install 3utools on your pc

        Will do

    • +1

It's risk business though, and a lot of people have reported their accounts being banned by using this service.

Also, I wonder how they are able to offer that service 24/7.
