On sale is another TerraMaster NAS along side the 4 Bay F4-210 and 4 Bay F4-422. Featuring an Intel Celeron J3355 dual-core CPU, two 1GbE LAN ports with failover and link aggregation support, 2GB RAM (upgradable), HDMI and 2 USB 3.0 ports on the rear.

Edit: $459 C&C or $477 delivered at Scorptec thanks to Datatemp

Recently TerraMaster released TOS 5.0 which is a whole new operating system different to TOS 4.0 with a lot more features, cleaner UI, more apps and overall runs more smoothly. With TOS 5.0 I use the new Surveillance Manager to record my camera footage straight to the NAS and the new CloudSync app for syncing my OneDrive and Google Drive to the NAS as a backup.

Alternatively you can 'unofficially' install Synology DSM on this NAS and experience all the apps and features that Synology provide in their OS.

  • Have one and it's fantastic

    • Same.

I had the 4 bay one and returned it, was garbage. Had performance issues, updating the firmware would fail sometimes. Just generally poor quality software.

Hence why I mention TOS 5 because it's a whole new OS they've built and much better than TOS 4. Though sticking Synology DSM or even TrueNAS on it makes it much better anyway,

      • Interesting… that's good to know for the future.

Decent. I got one for $432 a while back. Added 8gb ram and put TrueNas on it. Plex runs pretty well, it does occasionally get a bit spotty with some 4K and and x265 files. Get around 20MB/s transfer speeds using wifi so I'm pretty happy with it.

One thing I'm missing with my set up is remote photo and file back up. I've been meaning to look into this.

  • Yep. Snagged one in Aug 2020. Upgraded the RAM and chucked a couple of 14TB pegged as one of the cheapest ever deals (back then). Works well, still going strong. No issues with 4K streaming via Plex.

I hate mine. The hardware is fine, price is great but the software is trash. It’s just constant headaches. The admin UI is awful and buggy. There are basically no apps built for it, and the Docker implementation you are therefore forced to rely on is hot garbage. Support is basically non existent, with a forum where questions either get ignored or broken English responses that miss the point.

I don’t know if the new 5.0 stream will make it less trash but unless you like fighting with crippled Linux for hours to do simple tasks, buy a qnap or syn.

TOS 5 is certainly better but you will need to factory reset the OS (not the data) to install it. Otherwise you could install Synology DSM so you get their awesome OS and apps.

    • thx. was interested docker feature.

  • Can anyone tell me if this unit can display HDD error light on individual HDD when the system detects an HDD error? Just so I can tell which HDD need changing by looking at the unit itself.

This question is for both TOS 5 and Synology DSM

    Thanks in advance

    • Yep there's 5 small LED indicators on the front. Flashing red indicates HDD or RAID failure.

      • Thank you!!

    • Yep, what Clear said above. I believe it’s hardware based, because it did it for everything I’ve tried: DSM6, 7 and also using OMV.

  • How hard to install DSM, and how stable is it?

    • +1

DSM7 is easy using something called TinyCore RedPill loader. Some detailed instructions are here. When I get home I can chuck in the terminal commands I used in a pastebin link or something for you.

DSM6 I used Jun's loader, which was a bit more involved and I often found myself needing to plug it in to HDMI (there's a HDMI port that's hidden behind a plastic cut-out). Given the security enhancements in DSM7, there's no reason I can foresee to use DSM6.

EDIT: As for stable, DSM6 was very stable - the only real time it crashed was if I decided to run a DSM update without reading forums to see how other people had fared. I've had 7 running only a few weeks, and it definitely seems zippier. No crashes.

      • When I get home I can chuck in the terminal commands I used in a pastebin link or something for you.

        PLEASE! :D

  • I'm guessing it can't transcode 4K to 1080p/720p in Plex, so only handy as a direct passthrough Plex server yeah?

$477 delivered by the looks. Nice find.

      • There is a store close to me so will save on delivery.
I am looking for a NAS to replace my fried HP40NL microserver and like to be able to backup photos wirelessly so hopefully this one will do the job.

      • update the OP for both deal? :D

        • I swear I did. I remember typing it but I guess I didn't submit.

          • @Clear: oh no…oh no…ohnononono…..

  • thanks mate got one
