On sale is this more 'high end' NAS from TerraMaster for the lowest price yet and features 4 disk bays with an Intel Celeron J3455 quad-core CPU, a single 10GbE LAN port, two 1GbE LAN ports with failover and link aggregation support, 4GB RAM (upgradable) and 2 USB 3.0 ports on the rear.

Recently TerraMaster released TOS 5.0 which is a whole new operating system different to TOS 4.0 with a lot more features, cleaner UI, more apps and overall runs more smoothly. With TOS 5.0 I use the new Surveillance Manager to record my camera footage straight to the NAS and the new CloudSync app for syncing my OneDrive and Google Drive to the NAS as a backup.

Alternatively you can 'unofficially' install Synology DSM on this NAS and experience all the apps and features that Synology provide in their OS. Alternatively if you're just after basic file storage the F4-210 4 Bay NAS is on sale too for $287.99.

Can anyone comment on using this as strictly a plex server?

    • I'm wondering the same, and if m2 storage can be installed for caching.

There's no M.2 slots in this. You'd have to sacrifice a bay for a 2.5" SSD.

Thanks. Looks like it's back to brainstorming a itx build for plex.

          • @LiMaaa: Why would you need caching for a Plex server ? It'll run absolutely fine from mechanical hard drives only.

@Nom: Thumbnail and meta data loading times. If I'm ditching Netflix and other paid services, I want to make sure it's snappy and smooth. :)

@LiMaaa: OK, if you want the best experience then I'd choose a real PC with a decent CPU rather than the ultra-low-power Celeron in this - run your OS and Plex from SSD, put your data onto big mechanical drives. If you're happy with used parts, you can build a much more powerful spec for your $519.99 👍 I would ignore ITX unless you need to put your server on display - it just pushes up the cost of everything and makes cooling and power more annoying and you're really limited on drive bays unless you spend half your budget on the case. An older tower case hidden out of the way makes a much better storage server - plenty of space for drives, and much easier to cool with silent (big and slow) fans.

This spreadsheet shows what software and hardware transcoding it can handle with Plex.

  • For those who wants to install DSM 7.1 on these unit.

I believe DSM 7.1 will only work on x86-64-compatible CPU with two cores or more, so avoid the cheaper "ARM" cpu model.
