  • matching officeworks who were beating good guys

    • Does anyone know if Apple stores price match? Coles have 20x flybuys points on Apple gift cards this week, so getting those to buy from the Apple store would net me a couple hundred dollars worth of flybuys points.

      • Generally yes they do.

      • +1

They once mentioned to me in store they will price match ‘up to 10%’. It’s hard because you need the gift cards at the ready.

        • +1

Yeah, I just called them up and they said up to 10%

      • +1

Literally did just that. Had gift cards from Coles with me to purchase in store. Got them to price match TGG. They do up to 10% price match with a physical Australian store. Just be aware the limit is 8 gift cards so $4000.

        • +2

Yup, just did it too. 250 bucks worth of flybuys and 300 off the MacBook, so in effect 20% off

          • @TheRealCJ: and additional10% off for tax return if travelling overseas in 60days

          • @TheRealCJ: What denominations and how many apple gift cards did you buy?

            • @CaptainQuackers: They have variable cards up to 500. The deal only allows a maximum of 50000 total points earned, so $2500 of cards

        • Just to clarify, 10% on top of the discounted price or max 10% over the retail price?

          • @GivemebargainsorGMD: Maximum 10% off the retail price, so ends up being the same price at TGG as TGG are doing 10% off. So say if TGG were doing 15% off retail price, Apple Store can only do 10%.

        • Can you share what price the receipt will show in the end that you receive from Apple?

        • Apple store at Chatswood sydney refused to match the price. Anyone have successfully match the price around sydney stores?

          • @hero1211: What's their reason? I'm in Melbourne and I got them to price match TGG in Geelong.

            • @dreamykitten: They said they couldn't price match, that's all, no reason at all hmmm

              • +1

@hero1211: You can try and price match on the phone. Also that way if you have Apple Gift Cards you can use them. I was told you can pay by Apple Gift Cards over the phone.

                • +1

@dreamykitten: I called the store in Sydney CBD and they agreed to price match 10%, will go there tomorrow. Thanks :)

                  • +1

@hero1211: Glad to hear. Just make sure your model is in stock at any TGG store. Didn't know not all Apple Stores price match.

  • Grey 1TB SKU discounted too.

  • +26

Paid RRP for the 1TB version, not upset at missing this as wanted to pick something up before end of financial year. But for anyone comparing Windows laptops and macbooks, I have come to learn that a macbook pro just works. Windows laptops on the other hand look good on paper but overall decrease in capability the second you unplug the power, and poor thermals induce regular overheating and real world specs end up miles away from what's on paper. Just my two satoshi's

    • +3

What Windows laptop are you comparing your MBP to?

      • +12

Personally: Dell Inspirion, Dell XPS, ASUS TUF Gaming laptop, Metabox, Nitro.

        Across the board, widespread reports.

        Edit: updated asus laptop name

        • +1

What are the CPUs in these laptops you are referring to? They mainly seem to be Intel based. Intel 11th and 12th gen are power hungry and generate a lot of heat due to an inferior 10nm manufacturing process. AMD Ryzen 5000 and 6000 CPUs are manufactured by TSMC, similar to the Apple M1 and don't have the same issue as Intel. If you need further clarification refer to the below review by Notebook Check where they compare the M1 Pro to Intel 12th gen and AMD Ryzen in terms of efficiency.

          https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Ryzen-7-6800U-Efficiency-R…

          • @shellshocked: Like I said, windows laptops can appear great on paper. The Asus TUF gaming laptop sure has impressive specifications, powered by Ryzen. Crashes within minutes of any intensive processing using the Adobe Suite, especially video editing like Premiere Pro. As soon as intensive activity starts, thermals kick into overdrive and performance tanks. No technical specifications on notebook check will prepare you for that.

            • +1

@mgexiled: Which Ryzen CPU are you referring to? I have and X13 2in1 with a 6800u and don't have the issues you are referring to in your gaming laptop. Considering that your TUF has always come with a 45w+ TDP H series CPU and is designed for a thicker gaming laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA GPU. Your dGPU also consumes power when unplugged in addition to the CPU. The first generation budget TUF laptop was notorious for bad cooling, because Asus blocked the air vents with a bad design. If it had a U series or HS series Ryzen CPU without a dedicated graphics card, it would be more comparable to an M1/M2.

            • +7

@mgexiled: I can only agree with you. I bought a ASUS Predator G14 laptop with a 5700HS chip, on a 7nm process. Apparently the heat production was supposed to be quite low and the battery was supposed to last for hours. In reality, the second I unplugged it, performance cratered, and I would be fortunate to get 4-5 hours battery life out of it.

Now I have a MacBook and I easily get 14 hours of battery on it, probably more most days. I can't tell the difference between plugged in and unplugged. Only starts to get warm when running really intense npm tasks, and the fans only actually become audible if I am exporting from Final Cut Pro.

I thought MacBooks were overpriced toys for years, but M1 absolutely dominates in my experience. Plus, after using macOS for a while, Windows 11 starts to feel a little bit cheesy with its UI/UX. Of course, tastes may differ.

              • @misterpotatomato: I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or are serious, because there is no such laptop called the Asus Predator G14. Additionally a 5700HS CPU doesn't exist. There is a laptop called the Acer Predator, either Helios or Triton. Both are huge gaming laptops, with high end Nvidia graphics cards and Intel CPUs, none of which are called the 5700HS! Those laptops retail for about 3k to 7k depending on the specifications. Asus make a 14" G14 gaming laptop with a dedicated Nvidia or AMD graphics card. It also doesn't have any CPU called the 5700HS!

                • +3

@shellshocked: I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or are serious because all of his comments are true of any recent generation performance Intel or AMD processor even if OP got the processor/spec code wrong. My 5600H, while themally great still runs a heck of a lot noisier and hotter than my M1

                  • @Lukas: Then you would be aware that your 5600H is a 45w TDP processor, mainly used in gaming laptops. The M1 is 10 to 15w TDP as is comparable to a U series x86 CPU, which is a similar TDP. Refer to my Notebook check link I posted earlier. What laptop are you using with a 5600H?

              • @misterpotatomato: You'll never convince me that Mac handles window management better than Windows. Snap is one of the best bits of Ui design ever created. I wish every time I use a Mac I could divide my programs and windows into halves and quadrants with nothing more than a drag to an edge.

                  • +1

@davidtse916: Remember when iPhone people made fun of Android for using apps to add functionality? I sure do.

Anyway thanks, I'll check it out.

                    • @TheRealCJ: No worries. I used to use a paid app for that but I've found Rectangle to be just as good if not better :)

Here's a list of productivity apps I use on my mac to make things easier.
                      - Alfred (quick search & more)
                      - AppCleaner (cleanly uninstall apps)
                      - coconutBattery (show battery life for Macs & Mobile Devices)
                      - Karabiner-Elements (remapping keyboard keys to something else)
                      - LuLu (firewall, outbound only)
                      - Monosnap (screenshot tool; don't need to pay for the online storage to use it btw)
                      - New File Menu (right click New File menu like Windows)
                      - OnyX (system optimisation & tuning)
                      - Scroll Reverser (seperate scroll direction for keyboard & trackpad)
                      - TechSmith Capture (screen recording, macOS MP4 File Location: /Users/<your username>/Library/Application Support/TechSmith/TechsmithCapture/UploadQueue)
                      - The Unarchiver (like 7zip)
                      - VLC (video player)

                      • +1

@davidtse916: Thanks, I've had Macs before so I know most of those. Although I 100% forgot that apple for some godforsaken reason doesn't have middle-click functionality and it had to be added with an app. Because that's user friendly.

            • +3

@mgexiled: Macbook Pro M1 Pro/Max laptops have really good thermal and good battery life. However, they are not perfect either. Software wise, there are still issues and some of them are Apple Silicon version (can be buggy). Even Excel (native Apple Silicon version), using pivot charts, switching between sheets and even just making simple adjustments, some charts could become blank on screen. The only way around it is close the worksheet and re-open it. It does get quite annoying (I re-opened the file about 10 times just to update 3 pivot tables and 2 charts, I initially thought I lost all the charts). I don't have this issue at all with Intel based Macbook Pro's. No, I don't want to run Office365 Intel version through Rosetta.

The USB transfer speed performance is subpar. That notch. I thought bluetooth would be troublefree, but not so and that's using AirPods (not el cheapo non-Apple wireless headphones). To be fair, have issue with Intel based MBPs as well. The battery charging can also be a bit wonky at times. I had mine plugged into power before 9AM today, MacOS elected not to charge the battery to full and went for slow charging (with a message saying fully charged by 4PM and having an option to fully charge it right away). I don't get the logic. What if I went to the office and had to go to meetings? Business hours, Apple, come on. You call all that it just works?

Running on battery, MBP does elect to dim the display. So, honestly, cannot tell the difference between plugged in and on battery isn't entirely true for me. I generally don't boost the display brightness when on battery (because I do want the battery to last a bit longer).

              • @netsurfer: Thanks for your honesty. It helps me to decide whether to buy m1 or wait till next year.

    • +5

Only something like a 6900HS will be comparable to this in terms of on-battery performance.
Nonetheless you're generally getting more performance out of Windows laptops if you pick something appropriate for on-battery performance such as Max-Q binned chips, and AMD CPUs however most people don't especially on Ozbargain. (Yes, Nvidia Cuda still significantly outperforms Apple in most creative tasks. Please check your facts if you don't believe so)
We generally recommend people to pick laptops with higher than average CPU and GPU package power simply because most people do intensive tasks while being plugged in. Furthermore, people who are more informed can intentionally lower the performance to avoid thermal throttling and excess power usage.
Hardware Unboxed has an incredibly good video with stats covering this

      • +1

You cannot make blanket generalisations even in relation to 'creative tasks'. If anyone is even remotely serious about choosing what's best for them, look up performance comparisons specific to your application and base your decisions on that.

For blender most comparisons favour windows laptops with powerful discreet gpus, but if you're a video editor m1 pro/max is a no-brainer and the differences are even more one-sided once you compare unplugged performance and battery life.

        • +1

Your name a reference to Benjamin Cowen by any chance?

        • +1

Well, I would still stand by the statement that it’s better in “ most creative tasks”. It only loses out in video editing because of the dedicated prores accelerators. Not everyone is a video editor and video editing/rendering is not “most creative tasks”.

Furthermore it’s not a blanket generalisation because it genuinely loses out in most tasks tested by Hardware unboxed and I have acknowledged it generally has better on-battery performance so I don’t understand where you’re getting at.

          • +1

@Yve: @Yve The video you linked to is for the M2 vs amd/intel, but this deal is for the m1 pro and that's what I'm referencing. This video compares the m1 pro to the 3060 blade and in every adobe application the blade does not fair well (granted this is the older 5900hs model, although the newer 6900hs/6800s g14 is still behind in all adobe applications.

            @mgexiled Yes indeed.

      • Ive given up on Intel and Microsoft for ARM+OSX and wont be going back anytime soon.
        Its fast, even on battery.
it works longer on battery too!
Same apps that Im used (both free and paid for) as windows

Better quality and unlike any of my microsoft pc's, laptops and tablets, it has resale value!

        • +2

Yeah, that's what I thought. Bought a 14 Inch today.

Turns neither Netflix, Disney plus, or ABC iview have working apps for MacOS.

I find it odd too that iPad apps like procreate can't run on MacOS despite having literally the same silicone.

    • +4

from my experience (laptop technician, software developer, gamer) macbooks just take out guesswork in choosing your next machine. all of them are powerful enough (but get a device adequate for your needs), have good screens, battery life, and software is optimised. also it's damn hard to screw up. great for people who know nothing about IT, just pick it up and start using

for me tho, macbook is too limiting. I had macbooks several times throughout my career but they never stuck with me. sold all of them

typing this from surface laptop studio, and my other machine is gaming Aorus 17g. no macs in this house, and not changing any time soon

  • +1

Is there going to be 14" m2 pro?

    • +7

To be sure. But how much will it be with the A$ being USD$0.68?

The Macbook Air M2 is priced at USD$0.695.

The current 14" is priced in at an exchange rate of USD$0.73. The dollar was worth USD$0.74 when prices were announced.

If they were repriced now they would probably go up $250-$300, not to mention if the increased inflation/supply chain/alien invasion price of components will be added on to the US price for the next model. Apple is super very keen always to keep their margins at around 40% gross.

All prices were calculated after taking GST off.

    • Will be released either October or early next year. Currently someone saying M2 has overheat problem on the new MacBook air.

      • +1

No one has one at the moment. The reviewers get their's tonight our time. Was it Tim Apple?

        • +2

I think he means on the MacBook Pro, which does apparently suffer from some real thermal throttling issues.

What annoys me more is that apparently the 256gb versions of the MPB uses only one SSD unit, which means that it has half the Read/write speed of the M1 model. And I'm talking bad. Like… Only about 40% faster than a Samsung T7 via Usb 3.2

  • +11

This is a great laptop. I have had three MacBook Pros over the years, this one blows them all out of the water. Apple have gotten everything just right, the keyboard is great, the battery life is amazing. They went thicker on the build rather than chasing the slim factor and it has paid off. Solid, not too heavy, great I/O (MagSafe, HDMI, SD reader). Best laptop I have ever owned.

And no, I'm not an Apple fanboy, I had an iPhone for work for six months and did not enjoy. Happy to be back on my Pixel.

    • -1

Apple could of had all these features in a slim body.

  • +1

Thoughts on this or a Apple Air M2?

    • If air m2 comes with not half ssd speed (like m2 mbp) I would compare the 16gb version of this to mbp14. In that case you have to decide whether it’s worth the $720 difference (based on aoc pricing). To me it’s actually both good value computers and depends if you need the power and fan etc. also don’t forget the m1 air 16gb is like $1550 which is absolute unreal value! If you don’t need extra features of the m2 you can save $400 get m1 16gb. Either way I just recommend getting 16gb (and waiting to see ssd speedon m2 before buying

      • Why is the ssd slow? Would this also be the same with the 512GB M2 Air / Pro

        • +2

Sounds like it only impacts the 256GB model since it fits the entire 256GB on a single chip rather than being spread over two like it was in the M1 generation for 256GB.

          • @jace88: Ok thanks so the 512 would use 2 x 256

      • +1

If you want 16gb/512gb the m2 air price gets up to around $2300 at aoc. The extra $350 to jump to a pro 14 for: better screen, ports, better gpu performance, pcie4.0 ssd, bigger battery seems definitely worth it to me.

    • What are you doing with the laptop? Do you have a rough idea of RAM, CPU/cooling requirements?

      • Just the basic stuff, some gaming via Apple Arcade along with streaming on twitch using a Compatible capture usb card with switch connected. Using animated overlays etc

I’ll be keeping it for 5 plus year tho

        • +1

Tough choice. M2 air looks cool, lighter and little cheaper, but spec wise m1 pro 14 inch is much better. Whichever you choose, don't go below 16gb ram and 512 ssd. Pro got fans to run processor in an efficient way during heavy use. Both got 1080p webcam. Pro got studio quality mic where as air got ordinary mic.

Just think if you need coolness and portability = m2 air vs performance and efficiency in heavy load = m1 pro

        • It would be worth reading about the thermal impact of encoding/streaming based on the quality settings of the stream. Without knowing too much about it, I would lean toward the MBP.

          • @ihfree: Yer ok

Just the thought of having a 2022 M2 model rather then a older 2022 model tho

  • +2

Worth getting if you're not in the apple ecosystem?

    • +4

Definitely I’m not being biased no windows laptop can compete or will last long and be reliable

      • -4

Yeah, you don't sound biased at all 🙄

Truthfully, unless you're planning on using the MBP for exactly what Apple thinks you should be using it for (movie/music making), you're better off with an X64 based laptop for the time being. Apple silicone works amazing for Apple programs, but anything that isn't native runs like arse. If you're fully invested in Apple's ecosystem, or plan to be, then it's a perfect laptop. If you have Windows or Android devices and plan to mix and match, just remember that almost all the games and programs you run on intel/amd architecture won't work, and there's little to no integration.

If you want a MacBook to use as a completely standalone laptop, as in you keep it wholly separate from your phone or Windows computers, then it's perfect, grab it and enjoy. Just don't expect to be able to jump from your macbook to your desktop or vice versa without having to interrupt your workflow.

        • +4

I jump from Windows to macOS and back to Windows almost every day, not sure what problem you might have?

          Anyway, mine is Intel Mac.

    • +2

I am still using my 2012 macbook pro right now, its just chrome trying to drag it slow, otherwise I still can't tell myself to change it yet, the design after so many years still stunning, I still prefer the light up apple logo on mine.

      • +3

I love the light up Apple logo. Have you tried Brave? It's Chromium based but a little less heavy than Chrome supposedly. Turn off all the junk and I find it better.

        https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2022/04/change-these-settings-…

I'd add two thing to that list. Google search for me is still better than DDG, or Brave search. Also, while your customising the front page, turn off Brave News that they're really pushing at you these days.

        Queue the rabid anti-Brave dogs.

        • +1

I would recommend to make the best of all search engines. My personal experience:

Google - Great for shopping and general products. Best part of Google is the map!

DDG - Better results for my work like engineering, medical/surgical, and even Linux related searches. I want wiki/informative type results but Google mostly gave me commercials.

    • Depends if the features of the M1 Pro appeal to you or not. I personally have really enjoyed using an M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14" even though I don't really make use of the M1 Pro too often over the regular M1 in my previous MBP 13". That being said, I like the physical size/shape/etc of the 14" and the speakers are great, so I was happy with this choice.

If I could do it all over again, assuming the M2 Air is quite a bit cheaper, I'd potentially go for that over the 14" M1 Pro since it's not too far off in screen size, but is quite a bit lighter/etc. I use a TB4 dock at my desk anyway so the lack of ports isn't an issue (although I do like the SD slot especially with a Jetdrive in there).

  • Hope, it will be less than 2k in Prime day. But, it will just be my dream.

    • +6

Apple offers resellers just a smidge over 10% as margins, so no chance. Bezos' rockets don't come cheap.

      • You are right. Will hold onto my 2015 macbook pro 15 until prime day. Lets see if offer gets any better.

      • -7

Apple are the biggest scams.. stealing people money.

        • +2

You were right about scam - stealing people money. But in order for this to be true, Apple has to steal and people want to have they money back, I don’t see that happening often, most were happy for Apple to take their money in return for the product and/or service they get…

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m against Apple’s pricing, much higher than what I can normally afford, I simply refuse to pay the full price either through deals on Ozb or elsewhere, or not buying at all.

          • @[Deactivated]: I agree with you. I will gladly buy apple Stock though 😀

            • @shegeloaf: Hope you had, it has been raising this whole week 😜

        • Pretty useless comment. Care to detail why?

        • well the joke is on them coz at the same time i stole one of their laptops and it's so good i'm not giving it back

          • -3

@yahms: Hehe. No jokes otherway around.

We who buy apple company stocks look to earn money at the expense of apple 🐑 who gladly buy their products at ridiculous prices thus improving Apple profit margin and share price 😀😉😉

I look to make money and not only loose money to apple.

            • @shegeloaf: You could say the same about any corporation. Once again, what makes Apple special?

              • @ihfree: Just a brainless apple hater. Trying to act smartass, comparing specs with other cheap windows laptops with plastic body which will not last more than couple of years.

  • +7

Bought one at full price on 30th June from JB. Called up store and they happily returned the balance by matching TGG offer and additional $60 store credit which is also going on with TGG. JB has 14 days price guarantee which is not known to all.

No not realy as $500 for another 500gb storage isnt a must have as you have fast external storage offers now

      • +2

        Its $290 extra for 10-Core CPU, 16-Core GPU 16GB and 1TB storage.

        • It's a good deal but it's $500 more for a laptop.

  • Apple never let other retailers / distributors sell 32gb and 64gb variants leaving prosumers no choice but have to buy from them without any discount
