Can I play Call of duty on this one?

    • +38

Who needs anything more than snake?

    • +20

If this runs J2ME (Java games) it's actually possible to play Call of Duty on a dumb-phone

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvICqFwlk6g

      • +55

        You ruined his lame joke.

      • +2

I've not got this one, I got the 3310 and banana phone remakes, the latter uses Kai OS and IIRC it couldn't play the ol J2ME games, but the 3310 could, if this is Kai, then probs not, no.

tbh busting out the old mobile Guitar Heros and some other gems was actually well worth it on the 3310, not to mention finally finishing Super Mario Land in one run on the MyBoy GB/C emulator.

        • which 1 has wifi ?

          this or 3310 or banana

          • +2

@dcep: Banana does, 3310 does, this one I don't know, but if it's Kai and more modern like most of them, probs

FYI the hotspot on the banana was VERY spotty

        • I've noticed that the KaiOS phones are typically rocking a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage.

The Symbian phones are usually Unisoc, have less RAM (64MB) and less internal storage and lack the hotspot feature.

    • Why not try genshin impact instead?

      • +3

Cause you will end up spending over 10 times the value of the actual phone on it.

        • +3

          Sounds better than Diablo!

        • No you won't? The game is perfectly playable and enjoyable without engaging with the gacha elements. You can catch up to the main plotline without spending anything.

    • +21

No. But you CAN make a call of duty depending on whom you call.

    • +2

sure can but first flash some AOSP, add a cooling tower and voila!

    • +2

      Crysis*

    • Y'all don't have phones?

  • +7

Great for a burner phone… or so I hear..

    • +14

So how does that even work when you can't activate a sim without with all your ID and a blood sample

      • -7

        Trump managed it

        • +8

          Trump managed it

Good to hear that TDS is still alive and well…

      • +2

So how does that even work when you can't activate a sim without with all your ID

Get someone else to register the SIM and buy it off them. Pre-covid it was pretty common to get them off backpackers leaving the country… or so I hear…

        • I see. I don't know any of those. :)

  • +9

    Dual SIM and 4G wow

  • -2

What good is 4g if all it can do is make phone calls?

    • +16

3G is being shutdown gradually and the existing 3g signals are being "refarmed" for 4G. See https://www.telstra.com.au/business-enterprise/support/3g-se…

So 4G support is actually a necessity for phone calls to function in the future

      • Without VoLTE my smartphone needs to fallback to 3G for making calls. What would happen when they turn off 3G? Will all phones need to support VoLTE?

        • Yes they will - once 3G is gone, if your phone doesn't have 4G, it won't be able to make/receive calls apparently

          • @lachhelix: Thanks. But my question is about VoLTE only. My phone does have 4G (for internet), but I couldn't find the settings for VoLTE.

            • +2

@Averell: Yeah - if your phone doesn't support volte - regardless of whether it has a 4G radio or not, you won't be able to make phone calls

    • +1

You can hotspot off it, so something like Felix, which requires a phone, can still be used as permanent home internet, without violating their ToS.

  • +5

It has a whopping 0.3 megapixel camera! OMG!

    • +11

Perfect for those of us who are too shy about sending out d*** pics in HD.

      • +2

Aren't all phone pics are digital?

    • +1

All pictures taken on this phone are genuine UFO and/or Sasquatch photos.

    • Title said dumb phone!
With dual sim there has to be a compromise.
If Nokia have had at least left it with 5Mp they could sell them all at a premium!

  • +12

Great backup phone to carry international SIMs though…

  • Anyone know of a waterproof minimalist phone like this? e.g. for work in wet nevironments, boating etc.

  • +5

Don't know how, but Amazon applied 5$ promo code on top of the sale brining it down to 57$ for me, check your luck.

  • but why get this when you can get a omgbbq Rugum I13 Pro Max

ios based on stolen Android does not fall into same league!
Nokia beats this on durability perhaps 20 extra floors!

  • does it support WhatsApp ?

    • Good q, would also like to know

    • No

    • This video says it does in the title: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlG3frfvKbc but of course it's not in English because these types of phones sell well in India-like countries, and OzBargain.

      • Lol, the first comment sums it up pretty well!
I believe it does not support whatsapp.

        • +1

This is why YouTube needs the dislike ratio. I didn't put too much effort into searching. There certainly are KaiOS phones that have buttons, are pretty cheap, and do have WhatsApp built in. This may not be one of them then.

          • @[Deactivated]: This is a Symbian phone, you can tell by the Unisoc chip, 64MB of RAM (KaiOS needs ~512MB) and the lack of hotspot.

            WhatsApp is available on KaiOS.

  • No band 28…

Edit: Actually, looks like the Australian ones might have band 28, despite several sites saying they don't.

  • +3

JB's been 63 for a good while now, and would be elligible for the $10 voucher too https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/nokia-225-4g-black

  • +4

hmmm miss the alpha-numeric keypad! I can create and send sms even if the phone's in my pocket!

    • So true! Back when it was legal you could txt while driving and keep your eyes on the road!

  • +7

I'd love to get away with using one of these where the employer insists you must supply your own "work phone."

  • +4

You had me at fm radio

    • Sounds incredible on the inbuilt Dolby® surround speakers, although the tweeters and woofer tend to drain the battery somewhat if you turn it up loud

  • anyone know if these have "find your phone" / GPS built in?

    • +1

No GPS. Only an 'old school' find my phone system… call it from another phone :-)

      • thanks. This is a miss for me then

  • What year is it?

    • +9

      2022, wake up

      • Waiting for September to end

  • +1

It's difficult to use. Typing anything is a torture. Mine is collecting dust, instead I got myself a smartphone which can be flashed with Lineage which gave me an ungoogled phone.

    • -1

I had an old Blackberry which was still usable thanks to the full tactile keyboard, but after a decade of use eventually i finally gave up on me. Now the best option seems to be the above, Android with flashed ROM.

      • +1

Could you just find a replacement battery for the Blackberry?

        • Blackberry are TERRIBLE for spare parts - they won't sell them to phone repair stores. Chinese sites are about that only option and a lot of them are used parts sold as new 🙁

    • Which smartphone did you go with?

      • POCO X3 Pro. A pain to unlock, pretty cruisy after that.

    • Hi I got this for an elderly relative who hates touchscreen, does it have inbox and sent messages as they couldn't find it in the menus?

      • I am pretty sure it does have all the basic features.

  • +1

How loud are the speakers when on call

    • +2

As loud as the person on the other end is speaking

      • Couldn't possibly, as this would violate conservation of energy.

  • +1

unfortunately, there aren't many options with dumbphones anymore, but this is a good deal I've had it for a while now and it works well.

  • +6

Thanks OP, perfect for a child's emergency phone that lives in the bottom of their school bag for emergencies.

Battery life is measured in weeks, not days due to it's 'dumbness'…. and it charges via standard USB.

  • What's this FM business, i been rocking ABC national on AM for years with bonus static included

  • Does this allow mobile hotspot in any way? Thank you

    • No Wifi

    • Apparently no hotspot

    • No, I have the phone and you cannot hotspot anything as there is no wifi chipset.

      • Hi I got this for an elderly relative, does it have inbox and sent messages as they couldn't find it in the menus?
Will have a look myself on the weekend.

        • It shows SMS in a thread just like an Iphone or Android SMS app

  • Decent enough dumb phone, but your better off going with a telstra lite 2.

Same basic phone, much cheaper. Woolworth are currently clearing them at $9 each. Add in $10 for an unlock code, and the experience is just the same.

    • +1

Where do you unlock it for $10

      • Can't advise at this stage, but that's how its been for every other telstra old phone.

It'll be some ZTE model that you can ebay for unlock codes. Sometimes you have to use ebay.com instead of au, or even spanish or something like that. Last time from recollection I didn't even need the code.

      • The cost depends on the phone, but eBay sell codes. They work. Just make sure to buy from an experienced seller. As for unlocking 3G Telstra phones, that was pointless, since most don't work on Voda or Optus bands.

    • recently used a friends and i doubt the experience is the same.

the buttons either double pressed or didn't count at all, half the time they worked properly. i don't know if it was just that particular phone, or a problem across all of them, but it was annoying to use.

i suspect the nokia is built a bit better.

  • +1

Use 10$ JB perk + if you have commbank cashback for JBHifi. Or check if you getting commbank 15$ voucher for amazon on MasterCard.

  • digital fm radio via speaker????

    • Yes

  • Phones are so ridiculously cheap nowadays it's unreal to think that 20 years ago things like this would be a luxury item.

    • 20 years ago was still this millennium. It's not the before times. We didn't ride dinosaurs. Almost every single person had some form of Nokia phone.

    • Probably closer to 30 years ago, but point taken. (I bought a 3G Samsung dumbphone for $30 25 years ago. I still use it daily.)

      • +1

You had a 3G phone before the 3G network existed?

        • Maybe they're from the future :p

        • +1

Hm… I bought it so my wife could contact me if she went into labour. Child was born 1996. It's a 2G/3G phone and Australia got 2G in 1993. So at first I thought it must've had 3G ready to go. But I took you at your word and checked, and the model was released in 2010!? I don't remember having another phone before that but I guess we must have. I remember it was a Telstra plan from Retravision for about $30/m for access only, came with a phone, calls were extra. That's gonna irritate me now until I remember lol.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah I thought your comment was a bit suspicious but it turns out 3G was first established in Australia all the way back in 2003, so not far off.

I'm pretty sure our first ever mobile phone came with a PS2 which we mainly used as a DVD player. The technology was amazing!
