Original Coupon Deal

Perhaps a niche deal. but noticed a price drop on The A500 Mini at The Gamesmen and their eBay store and picked one up myself.

Next cheapest is $179 at Amazon AU.
All time cheapest was $169 from BigW eBay with eBay Plus.
RRP is $199.

Not sure but it appears that these are becoming less common.
They are certainly not scarce, but BigW and JbHifi no longer stock them.

At this price you could likely pick one up, play with it until you get bored, and then sell it for the same amount you paid.

Shop through shopback for 0.5% cashback (codes are listed), and pay with eBay giftcards purchased through the shopback app for 3% cashback. As usual, prices in the title do not include cashback.

Its not a working mini a500 just a crappy game console in a shape of a500. with a crappy game controller

    • The Amiga had a whole bunch of custom chips making emulation quite a feat; though it has been done on x86 for a while now.

    • +8

This thing has good reviews and will run workbench without much hassle, so I don't know what your problem is with it?

    • with a crappy game controller

It's probably the same as the original CD32 controller…

      • i bought these new manufactured retro atari controllers

they look exactly the same but you'll be lucky if they last 30 minutes

        they might look the same…

  • +3

Hmm, I've got an actual A500 boxed up somewhere. Wonder what it's worth these days…

    • +2

Same but not boxed, I also have the monitor.

      • +2

I see some past sales on eBay in the $350 to $500 range.
When I say boxed up, I don't mean original packaging unfortunately… just stuck in a box in storage somewhere, next to the Commodore 64 :)

        • +2

A500 is 350 (Min for a pretty rough example) to about $700 depending on cond.

Ive been looking for one for ages, in end gave up.

Got the Mini myself, and its not brilliant like thec64 ist not to bad at all (you can put a HDD image with all the games on a USB stick)

          • @Franc-T: I have the PlayStation 1 classic with the C64 and Amiga emulators on it.

Can you put retroarch on either of these?

            • @AndyC1: Possibly, though I havent looked into it myself as I dont need / want myself.

          • @Franc-T: you can do that on an amiga too

just replace the amiga floppy drive with a ~$30 gotek usb emulation drive

you can also get HDMI out with a pi zero board, unfortunately raspberry pis zero boards are so hard to get you are lucky if you can find them for $30 these days, they use to be $9!

      • +3

Monitor possibly worth more than the A500. $500 easily for a 1084 in good condition.

        • That's good to know, my brother told me they were rare when he gave it to me. I think he used it for making music years ago.

    • +1

Depending on the HW revision, ram and workbench version and if it works full then way more than you think. Check gumtree for prices.

    • I also have an A2000HD packed away somewhere… I've been meaning to dig it out and see if it still works.

  • Still very pricey for just 25 games. The C64 mini has 64 games and is still available for about $100.

    • You can add games VERY easily for free.

      • +1

I know, but it's still lazy of them. For that price, it should have 500 games installed.

        • +11

          Yeah well that's rediculous.

You think it's easy to get permissions? It'll cost infinitely more.

You want 500. Add them for free.

          • @scuderiarmani: The SAME company put MORE games on the C64 Mini and it cost LESS. Of course they could've done it. Maybe not 500 but a lot more games.

            • +1

              @Cheap Gamer: 500 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 64

Why don't I just pick any dumb number outta my head?

C64 games aren't even close to the quality either.

              • +1

                @scuderiarmani:

C64 games aren't even close to the quality either.

True! Wizball sucked on the Amiga. Classic game on the C64. 😜

            • @Cheap Gamer: Whoever owns the rights to the games has to give permission for the games to be used, and they typically want money for that. C64 game owners probably wanted peanuts for those games to be used as nobody was buying them. Many Amiga games are DOS games also and they are still selling on GoG.com and Steam, so they are worth much more.

On Steam and GoG.com you'll find Zool, The Chaos Engine, Speedball 2, Simon the Sorcerer, and Battle Chess as a few examples.

            • @Cheap Gamer: How much is it to license games for the Amiga vs the C64?

        • +1

Good luck with the liscening on that.

Each additional game is a minefield of costs for the sellers.

          • -1

@Franc-T: Not necessarily. By now, a few companies would own the rights to most Amiga games. You wouldn't have to deal with lots of owners. And the cost of licencing is trivial compared to memory chips. It saves a lot of money by having the user store them on a USB.

    • +1

      As I said, it's niche.

It does come with a mouse and joypad which to me seems more than the joystick that comes with the c64 mini, but others may disagree.

The mouse is going to be horrible to use compared to the mice of today, but for me at least there is nostalgia there as it looks and feels like the mouse I had on an amiga as a kid.

I'd prefer the C64 (not mini) or the Vic20, as both have working keyboards, but I can't find them new anywhere and they are not cheap on the second hand market.

      • +1

I think you missed the boat on a new thec64 - I just checked a bunch of places (I thought, no way sold out everywhere) but it is. Only listers from ebay I could see in the UK so add another 100 bucks for postage.

If you want retro feel thec64, you could back this:

        https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/myretrocomputer/the-com…

And put mini itx hardware inside. I have backed it after looking in detail at the history (this 100% appears not to be a scam).

Im getting at least one (undecided on a second) to use as a semi normal pc (I have usb numpad around i can use if needed as the keyboard not the same)

        • I seriously considered this one! Unfortunately though I have carpal tunnel in both wrists so use an ergo keyboard for all of my typing.
So while The C64 or The Vic20 would be awesome to have, they were more for occasionial use in my mind.
This might be a bit exxy for occasional use once I add hardware unfortunately :'(

          • +1

@Wilburre: I have had carpal tunnel all my life as well (Seriously for a very long time) - seems good to me but ill guess I will see when the c64x arrives.

            • +1

@Franc-T: Must have been from typing in all those compute magazine programs in the 80s

    • +3

Literally just need to download and WHDload game to a USB and it will launch. They couldn't have made it easier.

  • +2

Wish it was this price on Amazon. I’m not a EBay plus member and have already had the trial

    • +1

Only $3.68 more without eBay Plus as 20% off without plus (SAFY20) and 22% off with plus (PLUSFY22).

So not quite the cheapest price ever, but close to it and less than the $179 via amazon.

      • So it’s been cheaper before?

        • +2

I think he means that it's not quite the cheapest due to it being 3.68 more than this price. If you actually want one you would be mad not to buy this because of a 3.68 difference in price

  • +3

Better to go pi 400 with pimiga image.. works beautifully. And if you have a crt computer monitor even better

    • +1

I just went down a rabbit hole looking into this! Such a great idea

      • +1

If you want the best emulation run Mister with the amiga core

  • +3

Should have come with the hotshot turbo joystick for the authentic feel.

    • +3

I think I had quikshot turbo 2 but that was for the C64.

      • +5

        Please.

Those were pure amateur hour compare to the glory of the Star Cursor 2000! Might be time for my ten-yearly unboxing of the old Amiga 1200 to see whether it still works and whether I'm still the goalscoring superstar hero that Sensible Soccer transformed me into, all those years ago. In lieu of girls, alcohol or my HSC…

Thanks for the deal OP. If it allows me to install a copy of SWOS, Pirates or any other Sid Meier classics, it will be money well spent…

        • +1

haha no worries mate, glad I could help anyone let alone an enthusiast

        • Speedking pro for life

  • +4

got it and looking forward to playing lemmings - the nostalgia!!!

  • +2

Arrrr. to get this or wait and hope they make a full scale one with working keyboard like the c64

  • +2

I wish this had a joystick rather than the game pad, when I had my amiga i used to use atari style joysticks, went through a lot of them over the years too.

    • +1

I believe the c64 mini joystick can be purchased separately (not sure if it's economical though as others like a cheap ms sidewinder might be compatible), but yeah I agree, would have preferred it over the gamepad.

  • +1

I've got 2 of the original Amiga 500 boxed in storage with 100s of games. One even has the extra ram. Oh the good old days.

  • Anyone have a screenshot of the original deal showing the discounted price? Was hoping to put in a price-drop claim on the credit card I used to buy mine when it came out.

  • +1

    Perfect. Thanks.

    • no worries

  • Has anyone fired there's up and experimented with downloading any shareware or Linux iso's for it yet?
